Augustus McCrae, though.

What other made-for-tv miniseries ever had a more memorable character?

(Don't answer here, I guess)

I didn't watch it when it first came out, was busy as a high schooligan, chasing beer and girls or something. But watched it later.  Just freaking great.

Falling Down

I always forget he was in that.  Another great one.  That's why he's so tough.  I hate calling him a great supporting actor.  Because he was also a great lead actor, but man he was the best supporting actor in a ton of great movies.  Maybe he just loved being in movies with a great script.  I have a hard time thinking of bad movies he was in.  He probably turned down a bunch of bad scripts as the lead actor

Indeed.  Can’t say enough good things about Lonesome Dove.

Duvall himself said Augustus McCrae was his favorite role of all time.  He was originally slated to play Woodrow Call, but fought for the role of Gus.

Another of his lesser talked about movies that I love is “Open Range” with Kevin Costner.
