I always thought DoT was actually a great flick that holds up years later.  It came out in the very late 80's, but after Top Gun so it was going to be hard for Cruise to top Top Gun but I think DoT did a good job.

Think about it, have there been any other movies, successful or not, about NASCAR?  The John C Reiley spoof doesn't count ( damned if I can remember the name).  Talladega Nights....just remembered.
Great flick?  I absolutely can't agree.

But it was certainly made better than it otherwise would have been, with Robert Duvall's performance.

Well, certainly not my favorite movie or in my Top Ten, but I always liked it. And you’re right, it may just simply be because of Duvall.

Another flick with all the big names is The Eagle has Landed with Duvall, Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland,Donald Pleasence,Treat Williams,Anthony Quayle.About a German elite force Fallschirmjagger attempting to kidnap Winstn Churchill

Also I loved "the smell of napalm in the morning"

He was in a few episodes of the Combat series also saw him in the Twilight Zone series

Duvall appeared again with Treat Williams a few years later in "The Pursuit of DB Cooper" not accurate but action comedy

Evidently Duvall is a direct descendant of Confederate General Robert E. Lee
RIP Sir to a dying breed

PS forgot about True Grit with Wayne

Correct.

I heard once that he trained at an NYC playhouse at the same time as Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman and James Caan in the early 60s.  I don't know if it's true, but imagine going to see a cheap local theater production, and realizing years later those 4 were in it
Just a little bit of talent in that room

I *think* it could have been a great flick if they didn't mis-cast Tom Cruise in it.  He absolutely had no business being in that movie.

Not sure would fit.  Maybe Swayze? -- a bit more tough guy.

Anyway, not Cruise.  He was probably only cast in it to get Kidman in there, and coax the ladies to come see the movie.

Read the other day that Duvall was in the very first Twilight Zone.

Someway, somehow, not sure why, but I was on a Twilight Zone the other night and there was Duvall.  A guy that thought the figures in the dollhouse at the local museum were alive.

No comment on Secondhand Lions.  Duvall and Michael Caine.  Loved it.

I am no Hollywood Fanatic or Movie Critic.  If a movie wins an Oscar, in my book that means it will quite likely suck.

I dunno... Was "tough guy" the role? Cruise played a prima donna open wheel race car driver that... Didn't know much about cars! Who was brought into the "manly 'Murican NASCAR world" and clearly didn't fit.

He was like Sasha Baron Cohen's character in Talladega Nights except he liked chicks. But it was the 80's... That wouldn't have flown back then. Make that same movie today and the character is gay. Because they wanted a character that was the opposite of the NASCAR stereotype.

They weren't going for "tough guy". Those were all the characters around him.

Fantastic.  As rewatchable movie as there is.

Funny, warm, and great storytelling.

For not being a tough guy --

He beat and banged with the toughest guy on the track, Rowdy.  Then Russ Wheeler, another mean as a snake prima donna.

He rammed his rental car into an old guy in retaliation, and chased him down like a psychopath.

Then threatened to take a baseball bat to Rowdy's head if he wouldn't see the doctor.

So, it seems like they tried to portray him as a tough guy to me.  And got wrong in doing so.  Not believable ...at all.

And, if the idea is to turn the movie from an OK movie, to a great movie .... then get a believable tough guy.

Hmm... Fair enough. I don't think I've seen it in at least 25 years. I guess maybe they leaned into the "tough guy" more than I remember.

I'm not sure he was supposed to be a tough-guy, but he was definitely supposed to be a hot-head.

I don't think Caddy Shack or Big Lebowski were even nominated... therefore, they didn't suck
