He got lowballed. He felt undervalued. Pacino was getting 4X more than Duvall was offered.

That movie would have looked much different with him in the game. Big mistake as that movie was a disaster.

He was written into the script as dying well into in the movie, which he also didn't like.

Two of my other favorite characters he played were in Secondhand Lions, and, this may bring ridicule to me (and my University as Coach Tang is being accused of) but Days of Thunder as the NASCAR Crew Chief for Tom Cruise was great.

I remember him for that role, precisely because he was such a great actor, he could somehow make bad movies, good.

I heard once that he trained at an NYC playhouse at the same time as Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman and James Caan in the early 60s.  I don't know if it's true, but imagine going to see a cheap local theater production, and realizing years later those 4 were in it

I didn't know about the Caan connection, but I knew he trained with the other two. And yeah, that would be something!

Interesting, because that's honestly the first film I think of for him.  Phenomenal movie.

A movie I don't think gets enough credit is The Paper.  It's him, Michael Keaton, Glenn Close, with Ron Howard as director.  Very good movie that had all big names, and seems forgotten

I always thought DoT was actually a great flick that holds up years later.  It came out in the very late 80's, but after Top Gun so it was going to be hard for Cruise to top Top Gun but I think DoT did a good job.  

Think about it, have there been any other movies, successful or not, about NASCAR?  The John C Reiley spoof doesn't count ( damned if I can remember the name).  Talladega Nights....just remembered.
