Well... That “MEGA STORM OF DEATH!” That “ravished the entire northern hemisphere!” ... ended up being a gentle springtime 15 minute shower here in Columbus...

I had fun at the Spring Game, we chose to sit in the B deck to avoid the "torrential downpour of annihilation!" and the sound system wasn't working so I missed that.

Haskins looks like the real deal, threw lots of pretty catchable passes.

Jaylen Harris's (WR 6’5”215 lbs. So.) 1st TD catch was also a sight to be seen.

Band's halftime performance was pushed to the end of the game to miss the “armageddon inducing monsoon” was really enjoyable, they did Incredibles, Superman, and Batman.
JT Barrett got a standing ovation for standing next Meyer in an assistant coach looking manner. (I know, I know, says he doesn't want to coach, but when you act the part and look the part…)
Ryan Shazier rode on a golf cart to mid field, and the place went nuts when he stood, unassisted, to wave to the crowd. I was wearing his Jersey today. Someone must have been cutting onions close to me.

I thought Burrow looked better.  May have locked down the job.

Eleven Warriors recap of the QB battle.

https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football/2018/04/92485/dwayne-haskins-and-joe-burrow-showcase-passing-ability-make-cases-to-start-at-quarterback-in-ohio-state-spring-game

You know, I didn't realize Burrows had swapped in to QB the Gray side and credited Haskins will all 4 of those TD passes. Guess he looked really good then also.

If I'm Urbs, I'm playing them both.  I know it's frowned upon to play two quarterbacks, though not for any reason that makes much sense.  They are both good, and if one leaves OSU would be really thin at QB.  So name them both starters and move right along.

I think the psychology of this is interesting. It reminds me of some situations I've seen at UW and oddly the way Badgers fans look at the basketball team in the offseason.
Each year, UW fans try to guess how the rotation will shake out. And each year, the guesses have something like nine-plus guys at 10 minutes a game. I don't think that's happened more than once or twice since Bo arrived. It's usually a core six or seven, sometimes eight. When one looks at ninth or eighth guys through the years, they don't usually do much (and when they do, it's not for good reasons). But fans want that balance. They want everyone to be good or potentially good.
The weirdest part is when the team actually has to go deep like that, fans aren't that comfortable with it. There's always complaints. Why did this guy get a lot of minutes this game and few the next? Why do the starters (usually good players), get broken up five minutes in for three subs? In-season, it seems people like when folks settle into defined roles.
I say this because in the offseason, there's a feel of play both or play everyone. We expected the best, if these guys are each their best, we've got a good issue. But it's kind of rare a QB rotation ever feels that great when it's happening. The way our brains work, we're wired to assume when something goes wrong, that another choice would've been better (as it did not go wrong in front of us). A good example is that all of last offseason, OSU fans wanted less running JT. And when the offense looked lethargic in the first half, there was a lot of asking on this board, where's the QB run. Split QB jobs are much like this. You'll always find yourself guessing.
UW's had two in my time: the Hornibrook/Houston split of 2015 and the Tolzien split of 2009.
2015: Houston started, lost the job. Hornibrook was good, then uninspiring, then started ceding drives. Fans got split, pointed out which drives were better, got granular making their cases. It wasn't fun.
2009: Tolzien was the real starter, but Curt Phillips would get the third and fourth drives in games where UW wasn't suddenly up against it. There's still arguments about how Phillips going in against Iowa "took Tolzien out of rhythm" and cost UW the game. (I don't believe it, but that's another story)
It works on occasion, when skillsets are very different and when one guy is so good at one thing, it doesn't matter that his presence tips the play (Tebow, every good wildcat-ish short yardage set).
What I'm saying is, the brain wants everyone to be as good as we hope. But in the heat of the moment, we want the dude who's gonna be the best dude. Two similar QBs means a season of second guessing (sort of 2015-ish). Not making the call now is good, as you want both guys to stay through next year, but when push comes to shove, OSU has them, a top-60 recruit and a four-star from a Texas powerhouse, that's a decent group. And of course it's all solved if the team is very, very good.
(I know this is too long, but that offseason desire for balance and in-season desire for certainty is an interesting quirk)

agree.
Burrow looked surprisingly good. Haskins clearly has the arm strength and size over Burrow, but to my eye Burrow does everything else better.
Spring game caveats apply. It's just practice. Both looked pretty solid. OSU continues to have a good looking QB situation imo.

I totally agree, though in part because many times two guys are playing because they are both kinda crappy. The 2015 Buckeyes were a good example, not because both guys were crappy but the offense in general was pretty uninspired compared to the 2014 outfit.  In retrospect, it was because Tom Herman left and was replaced by not Tom Herman.  At the time, how many story lines were about Cardale v. Barrett?  Even now I here people talking about how Urban "mishandled" the quarterback situation that year by not going with Barrett from the beginning.  Of course, this ignores the fact that their worst performance that year was far and away the one against MSU, where Cardale didn't play a snap.
Of course, 2015 was also a year of extremely high expectations, as they returned nearly everyone off a national championship team.  As a Buckeye fan, 2002 and 2014 weren't just fun because of the championships but also because of the lack of expectations of the team.
In any event, I think both these guys can play, OSU QB's often hit an injury in a key spot, and there is little downside to playing them both, besides making fans crazy.  So play them both.

And we know that if Burrow doesn’t look likely to win the No. 1 job in Columbus, all options are on the table in the coming weeks:

Joe Burrow has not ruled out transferring. He says he wants to play, and if he does not see that happening here, then there are conversations he will need to have with his family, friends, and coaches.

1:07 PM - Apr 14, 2018

Burrow emerged from Ohio State’s spring game last weekend as the flavor of choice among most Buckeyes fans after completing 15 of 22 passes to Dwayne Haskins’ 9-of-19 performance. Of course, Haskins is also 1-0 against Michigan, on the road, in a game that actually counted.

If I was in charge. I would start with the QB that gives me the best chance to succeed, and give significant (or even the majority) of snaps to the back up whenever OSU gets a 3 score lead over an out classed opponet.

The start of the Season ESPN has OSU greatly favored over:
Oregon State 98.8 - half of the snaps can go to the back up.
Rutgers 96.4 - half the snaps can go to the back up.
TCU - 82.9 - TCU is know for Air Raid Type Offense, I'd keep the starter in even with a big lead a bit longer.
Tulane - 97.9 - half of the snaps can go to the back up.

Travel to PSU, good luck 1st year Buckeye QB starter, it's gonna be intense.

Tangent: I really like OSU playing a B1G team early, instead of trying to play all 9 of them back to back.

OSU has won the last 6 in East Lansing, MSU hasn't beat the Buckeyes at home since 1999.  Until the beatdown last year, MSU had won the previous three matchups not played in East Lansing (2 in Columbus, 1 in Indy).  Not sure home field is an "advantage."
Didn't you, just last year, argue that this wasn't really a thing because it was mostly coincidental?
MSU/tOSU games in East Lansing since 1999:
  • 2004:  Ohio State won 32-19.  The Buckeyes went 8-4, MSU went 5-7.  The better team simply won.
  • 2006:  Ohio State won 38-7.  The Buckeyes went 12-1, MSU went 4-8.  The better team simply won.
  • 2008:  Ohio State won 45-7.  The Buckeyes went 10-3, MSU went 9-4.  I think tOSU was the better team but not by 45-7, especially not by 45-7 on the road.
  • 2012:  Ohio State won 17-16.  The Buckeyes went 12-0, MSU went 7-6.  The better team simply won.
  • 2014:  Ohio State won 49-37.  The Buckeyes went 14-1, MSU went 11-2.  The better team simply won.
  • 2016:  Ohio State won 17-16.  The Buckeyes went 11-2, MSU went 3-9.  The better team simply won.
The only results significantly out of line with retrospective expectations are 2008 when Ohio State won by a LOT more than one would expect and 2012&2016 when Ohio State won by a LOT less than one would expect.

MSU's winning streak against tOSU outside of East Lansing was three games between losses in Columbus in 2007 and 2017:
  • 2011:  MSU won 10-7 in Columbus.  MSU went 11-3, tOSU went 6-7.  The better team simply won.
  • 2013:  MSU won 34-24 in Indy.  MSU went 13-1, tOSU went 12-2.  The teams were fairly even and played a fairly even game*.
  • 2015:  MSU won 17-14 in Columbus.  MSU went 12-2, tOSU went 12-1.  This one is honestly the biggest mystery to me but hey, stuff happens.

*Watching this one it never really felt like the two teams were fairly even.  It started with MSU dominating.  MSU scored on three of their first four possessions to take a 17-0 lead.  Meanwhile Ohio State was just awful with "drives" of eight, 20, and eight yards.

Next Ohio State dominated, scoring 24 straight points to take a 24-17 lead.  While the Buckeyes were doing that, the Spartans had "drives" of 16, zero, 18 (int), and one yard.

Then MSU took back over and scored another 17 unanswered points.  They scored on three of their last five drives with one exception being the end of the game.  Meanwhile Ohio State was just awful with "drives" of 21, four, nine, and 12 yards punting on the first two and losing the ball one downs on the last two.

In spite of that, the entire first quarter, the opening of the second quarter, the entire third quarter, and all but the last 2:16 of the fourth quarter was played with a differential of one score or less.
