Nebraska (0-3, 0-5) at #16 Wisconsin (2-0, 4-1) Post Game

Nebraska is wounded and they are coming to Madison in desperate need for a win. That alone scares me, because those kinds of teams pull out all the stops to get into the win column. UNL is a cornered animal right now.

Frost's boys, particularly with Martinez, are definitely capable of generating yards, and in particular are capable of doing it against a defense riddled with injuries and youth. I don't like that equation at all. I almost feel like UW will have to outscore Nebraska to win this game, and that feels weird. They also must dominate time of possession, which they should be able to accomplish.

That all said, I have faith that Jim Leonhard worked up some defensive play calling magic over the bye week, to put these young kids in a position to win. Martinez will give them all they want otherwise. That kid is really good, and he's just a true frosh!

UW's Michael Deiter on Nebraska:

“It is a rivalry game,” he said Monday as UW began preparing to face the Cornhuskers. “You know what we’re going to get from them this week. It is going to be their best and it will be good. We’ll need to be at our best or it won’t go our way.

“You know the older guys aren’t going to take that approach. But the younger guys can fall into that trap. They just don’t know any better.

They go: ‘What do we know about this team? They’re 0-4.’

“But if you watch the film, they seem better than a 0-4 team. I think they’re better than that.

“And it’s college football and it can go anyway on a given day. If you’re not at your best, it’s probably not going to end well for you.

“You never want to think you can have a bad game and still win.”

Paul Chryst, an Martinez:

“One, he is very talented,” UW coach Paul Chryst said. “Two, it seems like he’s got good poise.

“He makes you defend – him and their offense – will make you defend the whole field and really the whole play. If things break down he can be very dangerous.

“Each week it is interesting. Each week poses a different challenge.

"He is a big part of what they’re doing offensively but there are other really good skilled players around him.

“I think the combination makes them very explosive.”

D'Cota Dixon, on the UNL offense:

“They have a lot of talent,” UW safety D’Cota Dixon said. “Their receiving corps will be the best we’ve played thus far this season.

(Martinez) is very mobile and he’s got an arm. We have to contain him.

“It will be a challenge for us. It will test us both in the run and pass game and I think it will be good for us.”

If Wisconsin can get up early, I think Nebraska quits (again) and it will get real ugly, real fast.

I'm likely to miss this one.  Going down to the Cotton Bowl to watch those dirtburglars play those burnt orange people.   I'm sure we'll find ourselves some TVs for later in the evening.

I'd like to see some progress on the discipline and perhaps turnover margin.

I'll miss this one as well..  and by miss, not emotionally, but rather not watch due to other obligations.

I'd call it impossible but know better. I remember a certain worst-in-program-history 2018 Michigan team, in RR's first year, going down by a bunch to Bielema ... and then gutting it out with a win.
Of course, that was in Ann Arbor, but still. If that team could somehow beat a ranked opponent, anyone can.

That was Bielema's worst team too. No chemistry and lots of players on the field who couldn't stand being in Madison any longer. Very weird season to say the least, but that's for a different thread.

Wisconsin is probably the worst team in the country to be matched up against with poor line play.

Rout. Again.

Wisconsin should fire their staff if they don't score at least 50 points....

I don't think Paul Chryst would do that to any team these days. Not sure the team is even capable. Possessions are limited when you play the UW style. Now, if UW does get up big (I don't think they will) and UNL quits and decides to stop tackling on running plays, then maybe.

I'd fire them... and then hire Riley.   That's just what I'd do at Wisconsin.

Paul Chryst learned a lot from Mike Riley.
