From what I've read/heard ....

The flooding occurred between 4-6 AM, really bad timing for obvious reasons.

And the water level rose 26 ft in 45 minutes.

I heard Chip Roy on the radio this morning, and he said that the city voted down installing weather sirens.  There's a legit criticism.

And I'm sure there are some more, but sometimes bad things happen, and this seems like one of those moments -- unless I'm missing a part of the story.

I think there is a long chain of problems that led to the final tragic result, some systemic and addressable, and some just incredibly unfortunate.

Weather sirens could have helped, there are other flood-prone regions in the state that have them.

The state also has a super-annoying cell phone alert system that they regularly use to let us know if someone lost a dog 5 counties over, but was not employed in this case.  But as I stated before (or maybe on the thread on the SEC forum), cell phone service in that remote river basin is notoriously spotty, and the campers themselves weren't allowed to have cell phones anyway, but presumably some of the counselors and adult supervisors would have cell access.  There's still a problem with service.

(That was just an exaggeration about the dog thing but suffice to say, it has been used over broad areas before to alerts us of events that could never have any impact at all on us).

Beyond all that, this is a river in an area of the state that is well-known for flash-flooding.  Having a person monitor the weather services and NOAA weather radio 24/7 would have obviously been a good idea.  They may or may not have had someone doing that, but if they did, then that person failed to act in time, although they did have enough warning.

Another unfortunate fact, was that they had some of the very youngest campers, in the cabins closest to the river's edge.  That's obviously not an ideal campsite design with hindsight being 20/20.

Lots of other factors and failures occurred to result in this tragedy as well.  Ultimately my heart aches even more, because I do believe it was almost entirely preventable.

But it will never bring back those 80+ people including 28 children.
R.I.P. to all of them and thoughts/prayers to the families, there is some good that could come from this though to stiff a price to pay

To the best of my knowledge, only a few of the Cat 5 Hurricanes were at Cat 5 strength when they hit.  We took a direct hit from Beryl last year, and it's listed as a Cat 5.  It was only a Cat 1 when it hit here.

Just some more, about the flooding specifically on the Guadalupe River, that was so deadly.  Some shocking numbers, indeed.

Guadalupe River Flood Disaster:
A USGS team was able to reach the Hunt, TX river gage over the weekend and was able to establish from the gage data and high water mark an elevation of 37.52 ft. While data evaluation is still ongoing…the preliminary information suggests this is a flood of record at Hunt, TX surpassing the flood of 1932 of 36.60 ft. The following table is a list of the top 5 all-time flood elevations for the Hunt, TX gage:

  • 37.52 ft (July 4, 2025)
  • 36.60 ft (July 2, 1932)
  • 28.40 ft (July 17, 1987)
  • 23.50 ft (August 2, 1978)
  • 22.80 ft (October 19, 1985)
It is interesting to note that the top 3 all-time floods at this site all occurred in the month of July.
At Kerrville, TX a peak gage height of 34.29 ft was recorded making this event the 3rd highest on record for this location behind the July 1932 and July 1987 floods. The following table is a list of the top 5 all-time flood elevations for the Kerrville, TX gage:

  • 39.0 ft (July 2, 1932)
  • 37.72 ft (July 17, 1987)
  • 34.29 ft (July 4, 2025)
  • 17.93 ft (November 11, 2000)
  • 17.73 ft (October 28, 1996)

The Kerrville gage rose from 1.82 ft at 5:15 am to a peak of 34.29 ft at 6:45 am or 32.47 ft in 1.5 hrs.

With the number of fatalities surpassing 80 on Sunday, this TX flood event appears to be the deadliest non-tropical flood event in American history since the 1979 Big Thompson Canyon Flood in Colorado which claimed 144 lives.

Trump DOJ announces last night nothing to see here, Jeff Epstein didn't traffic minors to anyone there is no client list, there are no video tapes, and oh yeah he totally definitely did not get murdered, he like totally killed himself. LOL.

Elon Musk was right, the Epstein case will never see the light of day because Trump is all over it as is Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, and the richest most powerful people in the US and it's all part of an intelligence op which is why none of it will ever see the light of day.

MOSCOW —
Russia’s transport minister was found dead Monday, hours after being dismissed by President Vladimir Putin, in what officials said was an apparent suicide.

Roman Starovoyt, who served as Russia’s transport minister since May 2024, was fired in a presidential decree earlier in the day.

His dismissal came after a weekend of travel chaos when airports grounded hundreds of flights during the busy vacation season due to the threat of attacks from Kyiv.

Also on Monday, Russia fired more than 100 drones at civilian areas of Ukraine overnight, authorities said. At least 10 civilians were killed and 38 injured, including three children, in Russian attacks over the previous 24 hours, Ukrainian officials said.

Putin is a thug, we get it. The world has known this for the nearly 30 years he's been in power. Pardon me if I give zero shits about the internal affairs of Russia, when our own government is a complete and utter clusterfuck rampant with corruption and lawlessness. I care and worry about America, not other countries. And what's that saying...don't throw stones if you live in a glass house...

That guy suicided himself just like Jeffrey Epstein did. Lol.
