As I see it the situation today is that Republicans talk about cutting spending but then when they get in office they only make, at most, miniscule cuts.  Democrats talk about raising taxes on the rich but then when they get in office they only make, at most, miniscule increases in revenue.  Meanwhile Republicans do keep their tax cut promises and Democrats do keep their spending promises so spending keeps going up.
Bears repeating.

Yes, and realistically, relatively minor economic pressures.  But if they actually fucked us economically, painted us into a corner, we'd put an end to it by force.

We don't need much of a push to play with our expensive, shiny toy....or have you not been awake the last 60 years?
UK has the nickname "America's lapdog" for a reason. Because: they are our bitch. They are a junior partner in US world hegemony and when push comes to shove they will ultimately do whatever the fuck we tell them to do, like they always do.

Japan is basically completely reliant on US for it's national defense and is under the US nuclear umbrella shield. They will piss and moan and then eventually fall in line to the demands of Washington.

China is outside US control but the US will not be going to all-out war with China because: they have ICMB's tipped with nuclear warheads that could hit anywhere in the US. It's far more likely the US would try sabotage, espionage, destabilization to overthrow the Chinese government and get one subservient to Washington than it is US goes to a hot war with China. The Cold War with China will just continue on.

In case you haven't noticed, the US only bombs & invades brown people that can't really fight back and that do not have nukes- mainly at the behest of Israel. US has never once attacked an ally or a country with nuclear weapons.

I wonder who all the redacted content is about!?!
Ted Cruz, Bill Gates, Chuck Schumer, Alan Dershowitz, Bill Clinton, and basically every billionaire business magnate of the 80s and 90s, prominent US lawyers, and half the politicians in DC....no big deal whatever, c'mon everyone knows the Mossad needed its blackmail material.

Maybe let's just try getting the wealthy to pay some taxes.  You know, the ones worth billions of dollars with no actual income.  Let's get them to throw in some money and see what happens.
for the millionth time, this is impossible. for the vast majority of them their wealth is theoretical and not real until they sell a share of stock. And that stock could go crater just as easily as it could go to the moon.

you would have to write some kind of laws limiting stock based compensation and you would have to write some kind of laws prohibiting banks from making massive low-interest loans secured by stock shares. neither of those things are ever going to happen in a million years so not even worth talking about, and they may even be unconstitutional.

We give WWII a pass, but not a pandemic.  Okay.
Are you saying you disagree?

If so, I'd point out a couple of things:
First, just in general, yes.  In WWII we were fighting the Nazis and a brutal repressive regime in Japan that was arguably just as bad and it was a humongous global war effort and that just seems like it would reasonably cost more than a flu.

Second, from my perspective it isn't the massive 2020 pandemic spending (30.69% of GDP, highest since WWII) that is the problem it is the fact that spending didn't return to pre-pandemic levels after that.  Spending in 2019 was 20.65% of GDP and since then the lowest year was 2023 at 22.13%.  If we'd temporarily increased spending in 2020 due to the pandemic then IMMEDIATELY returned to <20% of GDP and stayed there for 2021-2024 it would be ok.  That didn't happen.

Third is duration.  For WWII we only had four years of expenditures over 22% of GDP, 1943-1946 (yes, I know that 1946 was post-WWII but there was wind-down spending).  Starting with the pandemic in 2020 we've had expenditures over 22% of GDP for five straight years with no end in sight.

And yes, the past 5 years are the most egregious.  Okay.
Are you saying you disagree?

There have only been 14 years of Federal Expenditures in excess of 22% of GDP and the last five years make up more than one-third of that.  Worse, the last five years are the only time we've had expenditures that high for this long. Previously:

  • 4 years for WWII and wind-down (1943-1946)
  • 2 years dealing with a recession in the early 80s (1982-83)
  • 3 years dealing with the credit-crunch recession (2009-2011)
So yes, the last five years are plainly and obviously the most egregious.

US has never once attacked an ally
We did technically attack France in 1942 (aside from 1798 etc.).

We kinda of go to war with all kinds of peoples and countries, including Serbia et al. and Germany of course.

I don't see a way to materially raise more revenue in the US.  At best, we might maybe get another $200 billion a year, or so.

As a practical matter, the only way is probably to increase the SS and/or Medicare Tax rates but there is almost zero political will to do this:
  • Republicans won't like it because it is a tax increase and
  • Democrats won't like it because they can't even pretend it is a tax on the rich as it is actually regressive.

Sounds like OAM is a proponent of taxing unrealized capital gains.

The only way for the government to raise revenue is by increasing taxes.
