Anyhow, neither party can ever EVER say another goddamned word about the deficit.
Oddly enough, both parties WILL continue to say many WORDS about it, despite your restriction.  The Democrats are going on pretty hard right at the moment.

The deficit is just another on a list of things each party complains about when out of power.  I do think a lot of issues could be managed with compromise but neither party wants them managed, they want them as issues, fake issues really because they COULD fix them, but won't.

The deficit thing is not fixable in my view.

Not without raising taxes.

I don't like the idea that if something is deemed "unfixable" that there's no sense in trying to improve the situation even a little

CO2 emissions, national deficit, homelessness, power of the egg lobby....

I see the deficit as inherently unfixable, I'd certainly like to try, but it seems futile to me.  The best we might be able to do is grow the debt slower than GDP growth for a while, if even that is feasible.

Raising tax rates doesn't seem to raise more revenue for obvious reasons.

As noted often, any serious attempt to cut spending would result in few getting reelected.  They know that.  It's a tailor made ad for your political opponent.  You threw Grandma over a cliff.  Or cut our military preparedness and pay for our soldiers.  Or you cut Social Security (which would probably get you in really hot water) or Medicare.

Agreed.

Our deficit is the equivalent of an 18 year old signing up for a credit card to get a free t-shirt and due to some error, put $50 million dollars on it.
There is no paying that off.
All you could do is have them declare bankruptcy and teach them how to use a credit card responsibly going forward (rarely and immediately paid).

Actually paying it off isn't a thing.

Well the lenders can't ever collect by force......'the people' and a few countries.  If a country with any meaningful amount of our debt tried to do anything robust to collect, we'd just attack them.
