One thing I did try and learn about investing is "don't panic".  Duh.

The long haul, etc.  Trying to time the market means just that, usually selling at the bottom and buying at the top.

I remember your FB post election night of 2016 about your prediction for your investments.

I can only hope the future works out similarly with a similar prediction.

Tariffs with Chinese imports makes sense to me, at some level, tariffs on other countries less so, especially at this level.

I think financial markets expect Trump to step in soon and claim some new trade deals, and the Fed might react as well.

Yes, China is one of our largest trading partners,  and represents our largest trade deficit.

Quote
In 2024, the U.S. exported approximately $143.5 billion worth of goods to China, with soybeans, oil, and gas, and electronics being among the top export categories. China, in turn, exported approximately $438.9 billion worth of goods to the U.S., with electronics and other machinery being the main categories.

In 2024, the US trade deficit with China was $295.4 billion in goods. This means the US imported $295.4 billion more in goods from China than it exported to China. The trade deficit with China is the largest of any U.S. trading partner.

It does and it will.  We're a huge consumer nation for them.  They view us as nothing more than an ATM machine.  And unless/until we fight back, they're exactly right.

One of the main reasons China's imports are so low, with us and pretty much everyone else, is that they impose extremely heavy trade restrictions on imports into their country.  Not only tariffs, but other highly anti-competitive practices.  In fact their tariffs are the smallest part of trade restrictions with China which is why the Trump administration is carefully phrasing things with regard to "tariffs, currency manipulation, and other trade barriers."  He's explicitly going after ALL anti-competitive behaviors.

Europe has been an... unhelpful... trade partner with the US in many ways as well.  Their barriers to US imports in the auto market and other arenas are notoriously anti-competitive.

We've been taking it up the keester for YEARS. Enough.

Will there be short term pain? Of course. Deal with it.

I thought the stock market might spiral down badly, but it is recovering.  I suspect investors figure about the way I do.

I'm still pretty negative on nearer term prospects.

Don't sell us short.  They also view us a competitor at best and an enemy at worst on the world stage, so they also throw in continued production and distribution of fentanyl precursors to help destabilize their ATM machine....while ultimately charging us for it, of course.
