Yeah, no knocking in my truck running 87 under both normal conditions and heavy load, so I've never bothered with trying higher grades.  "They" say you get more power.

I might try it on our next trip just to see, there are some pretty good hills on the way out to Fredericksburg and I'm very familiar with how it tows that route using 87 so I should be able to detect any differences, if there are any.
I'd be shocked if there is any detectable difference, but you might think there is because it's not double blind.

yeah, I know some of those guys - I just let em keep thinkin - they don't have dyno numbers
Yeah there are extremists and blithering know-it-alls in every group.  There were a couple old geezers on the Airstream forums who insisted I needed at least a 3/4 ton to tow my vintage 1963 travel trailer.  It weighed a scant 4,000 lbs and tracked like a DREAM because of its amazing aerodynamics.  But they were relentless.  So I started trolling them by posting videos like this:

One detectable difference --- on your receipt.

3/4 ton for a 4,000 lb trailer.....LULZ

I would go as high as 6500 with my 1/2 ton, probably not more than that, though.

A properly rigged out modern "1/2" ton truck is more capable from a "3/4" ton truck from 20+ years ago.

That being said, weight of the TV sometimes makes a huge difference in how it tows something, not always about the horsepower and torque.

No doubt.  At our nearest Costco, regular is currently 2.57.  Premium is 3.14.  For my 36 gallon gas tank, that's a $20 difference.

Scrap the experiment, save your $20.  :)

Oh yeah, at this point I've towed a lot of different loads with a lot of different vehicles.  Modern vehicles are very different.  Weight distribution hitching and anti-sway control are also supremely important.

My F150 is technically a 1/2 ton but its max tow rating is 12,000 lbs.  My RV trailer is 6500 lbs dry, probably around 8000-8500 lbs wet and loaded.  The F150 handles it easily.  But the hitching and trailer brakes matter.  My previous boat plus trailer were around 6,000 lbs but had no weight distribution, no anti-sway, and no electric braking.  It towed far worse than the RV.

Does the F150 have that twin turbo six in it?

You have more than me.  My Ram Laramie is max rating at 10,390.

I don't like to push up too close to that number, however.

I'll eventually get a 3/4 ton just to eliminate all question.

Yup. The 3.5L, not the 2.7L.  It's absolutely awesome for towing.  So much torque available throughout the power band. I test drove several gassers from all manufacturers and none of them came close to the Ford twin turbo under load.  The Ford F150 V8 was the worst of the bunch but the Ram and GM v8s weren't much better.

The diesel 250/2500s were obviously even better at towing  but they rode like dumptrucks and this is my daily driver and our family vehicle, so they weren't really going to be a real option.

^^^^

Gas mileage with the twin turbo whilst towing, on the other hand... let's just say that going uphill, I get low single digits.

Yeah, I think that's a great truck engine, turbos provide Diesel like torque bands often as not with horsepower as well.

A nice thing about an electric motor of course is the torque at low RPM, and high.

Worth saying again:

Calling it now - Bill Belichick's tenure at UNC will be a runaway disaster. There isn't anything serious about how he's handling himself as UNC's new coach:

"Bill Belichick and his 24-year-old girlfriend showed rapper Lil Wayne the ropes in Chapel Hill over the weekend, where the trio posed for a photo and spent time together at an indoor UNC practice facility."

From NY Post: Alarmed by CBS disaster, Bill Belichick insiders say girlfriend Jordon Hudson is a runaway train

"Even before this past weekend’s embarrassing CBS interview — in which Jordon Hudson made it clear who wears the pants in her romance with Bill Belichick — the legendary football coach’s friends were “shaking their heads,” one insider told The Post...“She saw an opening and she took it,” the insider added of how Hudson, 24, has inserted herself into every aspect of her 73-year-old boyfriend’s life and career."

"She has been heavily criticized and mocked after interfering in the former Patriots coach’s interview with “CBS Sunday Morning” about his new book, “The Art of Winning” — shutting down the conversation when correspondent Tony Dokoupil asked how the couple met... “We’re not talking about this,” Hudson said, interrupting the on-camera Q&A...It was a surprise that CBS chose to keep such an awkward behind-the-scenes moment in the final interview, but, as Dokoupil said in a voiceover: “Jordon was a constant presence during our interview."

"Hudson has also made her presence known at the University of North Carolina, where she recently attended spring practice as Belichick prepares for his first season coaching college ball. In March, it was revealed that Belichick wanted Hudson CC’ed on all emails between him and Robbi Pickeral Evans, the school’s Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs and Strategic Communications."

So did UNC hire Bill Belichick, or Bill Belichick AND his 24 year-old girlfriend? Calling it now (AGAIN) - UNC Football will be a DISASTER this coming season.
