I'm not calling any art history major "doctor".

Sorry not sorry.

A PhD in a hard science or engineering?

Doctor.

They have a great respect for engineers in many countries in Europe.  When I was working in Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, they referred to me as Dr. utee94.  It was embarrassing at first but I got used to it.

I call my little brother, Doc, when I want to annoy him

PhD's were called Doctor long before medical doctors were called Doctor.

My wife's PhD is in elementary education. Usually she doesn't care, but if she's being treated poorly in a professional setting, she isn't afraid to force use of the title.

According to both the university I work for and the medical wife-person, the term "Doctor" should only be applied to non-medical people within the setting of their field, such as their teaching classroom, conferences they present at, journals they write in, or other people writing about them in field-specific journals referring to them, etc.  Whereas medical doctors may be referred to as "Doctor" in any setting, like "Hello Dr. Badnews, may I take your order?"

......sounds to me like a rule a bunch of medical snobs made up.

One of the companies I worked for was owned by a PhD (Civil Engineering, Purdue - @betarhoalphadelta has probably seen his name. Christopher B. and Susan S. Burke Graduate Program - Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering - Purdue University).

Anyway, he has a sister with an MD, and he likes to tell her to get a real doctorate if she wants to impress him.

Cool guy.

One kinda funny thing to me is an optician who wants to be called "doctor".  Not an opthalmologist, who of course is an MD.   Not even an optometrist.

My wife has a cousin who is a Doctor of Homeopathic Medicine.  She wants to be called doctor.  Ok with me.

I call my dentist "doctor", I don't think he cares.

Maybe he would be more impressed with a DO degree, or DPM (podiatrists).

Edie Brickell was from Dallas.  I know a dude who knew her and occasionally played with her up there.
