I can still remember, as a kid, you’d hear someone comment about how “so and so” built their house and they meant that they fucking built the thing with their own two hands. Sure, they had help, and it was hard work and it took awhile but they were solid homes that served them for decades.
my father built our house
lived in the basement for 8 or 9 years before he could afford to build the main floor
the lot was a wedding gift from his father
his father-in-law called the bank and more or less co-signed the loan to get started

Just got a call from my mom, that my dad, who has been apparently having tests done since September, has an aggressive form of dementia.  They are down in Florida, and feel confident in seeing his doctor at the UM hospital once they go back in March.  But its so advanced that he had to be picked up by her from the Costco in Ft. Myers because he said they weren't taking his card, and his car was out of gas.  My mom got there, and he was using a library card, and there was over 200 miles left in the tank.  I can work remotely, so I can be there for him, but I also have 3 small children, that I can't ignore.  This is the most real world moment of my life
Ela,

So sorry to hear this about your dad.  I hope whatever comes next you can have some good days in there to spend with your dad.

Not two - whole crews(62 in all) - are you too broke to pay attention? Ask the people who at least had somewhere to stay even temporarly. What did you build for them besides the froth foaming from your triggered disdain
Yeah, you missed the boat here.  It happens.

Yes, of course it's far left.  That doesn't mean it's inherently wrong, but there's no denying it's a very far left viewpoint.
I think it's wrong that housing being a human right isn't something we all can agree on.

This.

When I first started in this business 40 years ago, getting permits was a fast process. We could start a project in November and have it built by the following November.

Fast-forward to today and it takes a minimum 18-24 months just to get all of the permits required. I've had projects where almost 30 permits were required by various agencies - many of which are redundant and contradict each other along the way.

It's a joke and it's why I no longer practice heavy civil engineering. It's not fun anymore.
Sounds like the immigration problem.  Legal ways to do it take FOREVER.

I'm all for building your own structure.  Instead of inspecting work during/after the fact, just have citizens get certified training to build safe residential structures, then you can do it yourself.

I'm mulling over the idea of getting a cheap-ass piece of land in the middle of nowhere and building a simple camping cabin on it.  Unofficially, of course.  Because if it's larger than 10x10 and you want to live there, you have to spring for a septic tank and/or well, which is like $10-20,000.

And many places don't allow off-grid or tiny homes.  They want you needing what's provided and paying for it.

But my larger point is that this tiny home thing is a step we now need due to a disappearing middle class and absurd housing costs.

The poor are still poor.
The utlra-wealthy are getting richer, and it's at the expense of the middle class.
There's no such thing as a 1-income family anymore (by and large, enough with your exceptions).

But I'll forever get push-back because somehow believing housing is a basic human right is a far-left idea.

This is also connected to the minimum wage being largely stagnant for 40 years.  If people were just paid a living wage, there wouldn't be such a housing crisis and/or people living in tiny homes or their vans.

I'll never understand the ideology that lands you on your knees sucking a multi-millionaire's dick.  I'm not saying they're evil, I'm saying their success does come at the expense of others.

California, 1939...

Madera County, family from near Dallas, Texas. Rent is five dollars a month for the small shack, rented to them by ranch owner. Moved to California following agricultural jobs..

You may want to research the definition of "rights" before making such statments.

Yeah, the difference to me is that a "right" means that nothing really has to happen.  For free speech, nothing has to happen except you be left alone.  Right to bear arms, free speech, none of it really should cost anything because nobody really has to do anything.

For housing to be a right, somebody will have to pay for it, and that somebody is everybody else.  Same thing with health care.

Do you know what the MW would be if we took the figure at it's highest point adjusted for inflation and simply adjusted it for inflation and put it into place?

The higher point was 1968, adjusted.  Maybe we could set it there and put a COLA on it and be done?

IF we could even come up with a common, acceptable definition of a "living wage" why should the minimum wage be a "living wage?"

I'm not really a minimum wage kinda guy, I think that the free market can and will be the best way, but I honestly don't see what it would hurt to raise it up a few dollars.  I remember years ago, in the 90's when MW was about $5 per hour, I was working at Lowe's and they paid me $2 more than MW (I was 20).

It shouldn't.  And any assertion that it should be is ridiculous.

I think most of us know this.
