And the biggest flip is in parenting.  I was fine with whatever punishment I got at school, just dont call my parents, because that will make it worse.  Now the parents come in guns blazing, that its everyones fault except their little angels
Great Post and I'd imagine true for most,my dad didn't have to lay a finger on me the looming thought that the large ugly man just might was enough.

When it comes to office timeliness there's a generational divide with recent research showing younger workers think it's fine to be 10 minutes late, even considering it on time, while baby boomers feel differently.

Chances are, how you feel about running 10 minutes late at work is a good indicator of how old you are. While it may be a sign of disrespect among baby boomers, Gen Zers don’t see the big deal.

In fact, according to 2024 research, the youngest generation of workers believes 10 minutes late is still right on time.

The online meeting company Meeting Canary asked over 1,000 British adults about their attitudes toward punctuality, and almost half of those ages 16 to 26 said that being between five and 10 minutes late is just as good as being punctual.

However, tolerance for tardiness decreased with age.

While around 40% of millennials said they are forgiving of colleagues running 10 minutes behind schedule, this dropped to just 26% for Generation X and 20% for baby boomers.

Adding to that, those with baby boomer bosses should probably avoid being late at all, even by just a minute, because in their eyes, “If you arrive after the agreed time at all then you are late,” the report cautioned.

A staggering 70% of boomers surveyed said they have zero tolerance for any level of tardiness.

And, OAM, I can definitely sympathize with you over pay because frankly the world is built to cater to people with dual incomes and I’m pretty sure you’re still single. So you’re carrying the load alone. After we had kids my wife didn’t work outside the home but we decided to not raise our kids in daycare and I worked shift work for 18 years. Fortunately I was able to support our family on a single income, but I worked lots of overtime and spent a lot of time to make that happen. Not sure I’d make the same choices again, but that ship sailed a long time ago.

Wow. I just watched Die Hard from start to finish for the first time in probably 30 or more years. I’ve modified my stance. It has just enough Christmas that I’ve reconsidered and I now do in fact that it is definitely a type of Christmas movie, although not what I would consider a traditional Christmas movie. But it’s most definitely “ Christmas-y”.

It’s amazing how much I didn’t catch about the movie that I caught rewatching as an adult with a life of experience.

That would be me.  We had weekly meetings for a while at work at 9:30m I'd show up, on time, and people would drift in and maybe the meeting would start 15 minutes late.  Once I stayed until 9:40 and no one showed up, so I left.  My boss called me about 10 minutes later to ask where I was.  Because every meeting started late, everyone, but me, showed up late.  It was cultural.

I tell my wife "On time is late, early is on time."

When I was at UGA, I took Astronomy because I liked it and knew a fair bit about it.  I could have passed every test with an A without studying or attending class.  We had 4-5 education majors on our hall who also took it as a "science electtive".  I started tutoring them mostly because they were cute females.  They didn't know ANYTHING about the topic, at all, from day one.  And struggled mightily with the course.  I had thought growing up during the Space Race would have had some impact.

My own kids teachers were largely dumb as rocks as well, from what I could discern.  And that district paid really well, the highest in Ohio.

In contrast, most of the professors I got to know pretty well were very very smart, smarter than I had realized when I started.  K-12 teaching seems mostly to attract subaverage IQ types in my experience, with a few good ones salted in.  Maybe you get what you pay for, the "free market" and all that.

Or we could hire a ton of administrators to ... administrate.

5 accomplishments Biden is touting before leaving office

I find it interesting "they" would tout these things because it's clear none of that resonated with a pretty large swath of voters.  You "tout" what you have of course.  I'd just let it expire quietly with no "touting".

I still think our basic system is broken.  It's large enough and industrious enough to make up for a lot of silliness and graft, for a while yet.

lol
ok
Or it's a traditionally female career (ie- 2nd income for the household) so the pay reflects that (still).
If it was a traditionally male career, I'd be making $90-100K a year.  I can claim that and you can disagree, but whatever.
You can look up your state's % of under-qualified teachers and see that there are shortages all around the country and we're just told to suck it up and make due.  We had a kindergarten teacher quit and then took a student-teacher still earning her degree from another class and she's now in that full-time position.  Because no one is applying for the job.  Because teaching sucks.

All that being said, I wouldn't advise anyone to go into teaching.  It's probably one of the worst jobs you need a bachelor's degree to get (well at least you used to need one).

The normal idea of supply and demand for teachers doesn't work because there's always been plenty of people willing to teach because it's fucking important.  But today, eh, maybe not.  Maybe having a populace with a common median knowledge base isn't important.  Just go on youtube or onlyfans and make your money without actually working.

It's all broken.
Pay teachers, don't pay teachers.  It's all fucked.
Move to Chicago and you'll make that.

n 2022, the average annual income of a college graduate with a Bachelor's degree in the United States was 52,000 U.S. dollars. This is a decrease from the previous year, when the median income for college grads was around 56,156 U.S. dollars.

yes, what percent of all degrees are the type that are worth it?

5%?  Less??

These colleges even have their own loan programs - with a chance (slim) that you might not have to pay the loan

I'm not even a Boomer and I agree with this... Show up on time. And "on time" ain't 5-10 minutes late.

My wife had a millennial MA (this was before we met) who was a new hire and would literally show up to work 5-10 minute late every single day. She'd always have some excuse about kid dropoff / etc. But every single day she showed up with a piping hot Starbucks. Guess whose job didn't survive when the 90 day probationary period was up?

If you're not 10 minutes early, you're late.
