Maybe this generation has it tougher, maybe my generation was greedy, maybe this, maybe that.

I still don't know what should be done about whatever the issue is.

But the misinformation runs both ways. Sure, new houses now probably cost a lot more than they did 30-50 years ago when most boomers were starting out. But they also were a lot smaller, with way less amenities and features, and much more plain. Many families started out in 1200 sq ft homes, with maybe 1 bathroom.  A lot of new homes now are twice that size, with multiple bathrooms, granite countertops, 12’ ceilings, expensive tubs, fancy appliances.  So are you really comparing apples to apples?  Plus, for many years until probably the 80’s, only the husband worked.  Houses could only cost so much, because you were relying on one income.  Now, if you have a professional couple, they could easily make $200-300k combined.  I’m talking jobs where the wife may be a nurse, and the husband is an engineer.  This income level was probably pretty rare up until the late 80’s/90’s.

I can clearly remember the days when a lot of families only had one car. The husband would usually use the car to get to work one week, and then carpool the next. The wife pretty much just stayed home that week.  If she needed to go to the store or something, it had to wait.
A lot of accuracy here.

Still not quite sure where all the hate from billionaires comes from.  I mean, take someone like Mark Zuckerberg for example. He co-founded Facebook, created a product that was far superior to its competitors of the time, grew the company, led it through several tech advances ( PC’s, mobile, metaverse).  How does what he did or have affect you in any way?  I mean we we get green with envy and object how one person should not be allowed to have that much wealth but…..why?

Some of these billionaires may have made modern America worse, like Amazon killing local shopping, or Walmart killing mom and pop stores, but this was always going to happen, whether it was Walmart, or something else that evolved. Walmart killed Sears, Amazon damaged Walmart.

We have a billionaire from our small town of 3,000 people.  He is partner in a little chain of stores called Bucees. His store was literally across the street from our shop. It was called Dons Quickstop. Then it was Bucees, then there were a few more, and now they’re all over the country. He didn’t take anything away from me to get where he is.

Yes they did.  Don't you know the economy is a zero-sum game.  For one person to get another has to lose. <insert sarcastic font>

Walmart is doing "OK" in sales and profits.  Amazon probably has trimmed these numbers a bit but it's hard to tell.

Walmart revenue for the twelve months ending October 31, 2024 was $673.819B, a 5.48% increase year-over-year. Walmart annual revenue for 2024 was $648.125B, a 6.03% increase from 2023. Walmart annual revenue for 2023 was $611.289B, a 6.73% increase from 2022.

I think Amazon and on line shopping has killed a lot of shopping malls.

I think a lot of it is jealousy.

Here is a real problem if we're talking about median real HH income, most of the increases over time have been in the upper quartiles of income.  The lower income folks have been treading water, not really seeing gains.  This has been going on for decades now.

And of course they can readily "see" billionaires out there doing stupid stuff at times.  They resent it.  If they were doing a little better over time, they'd focus more on how to get better than that.

There other piece in this is the government reported CPI is almost certainly underreporting "real inflation".  The figure was changed over time, particularly circa 1995, to understate inflation, so a lot of folks feel like they have gone backwards.  They get into the cycle of credit card debt and their personal financial situation is just not looking good, so they want to blame someone else (and whine).  It's an ideal condition for some demagogue populist to attract their vote.

For one person to win, hundreds just have to stay at the same plateau for decades.
You're right, let's joke about it and deny it's that way.  Fun.

Technically, this is not true at all.  It MAY be true in reality, but it need not be true, and in any event, no one seems able to propose any realistic solution to the "problem".

Billionaires aren't inherently bad, obviously.  But to get to that level, perhaps our system requires a series of selfish decisions to be made...and possibly unethical decisions.
Zuckerberg famously never wanted ads on FB.  It has ads.
Some would say allowing the algorithm to maximize engagement (and $$$) is unethical, as it preys on human nature.  That's not a jealousy thing, it's an ethics quandary.

What do large employers do?  When times get tight, they do what's fiscally responsible, letting go of many workers to insure the wallets of few stockholders remain thick.  Ho-hum if you went to business school, but when times are tight, that's the worst time to lose your job.

How many stockboys or greeters are benefitting from Wal-Mart's seemingly perpetual 5% growth?  Maybe the CEO doesn't need that $10 million bonus.  Maybe he shouldn't be rewarded for mandating those greeters and stockboys never reach 40 hours in a week, to benefit the company.

Now a person could very fairly be critical of the system and not those who navigate it successfully.  That makes sense.  But I don't think it's odd to suggest the difficulty/rarity of a billionaire reaching that level ethically.

So your point is to not deal with the reality of the situation?

If you would propose some sort of remediation, I'd listen (read).

I see economic issues in the US and expressed them above (sans emotion and hyperbole).  What I don't see is any practicable remedy or redress, as I keep saying, over and over, repeatedly, constantly, daily, hourly ...
