I'll bet what's being taught in those terrible schools is eerily similar to what's being taught in those private schools.
One big difference.
The students in the private schools have been raised to value education and to do well in school.  The students in "terrible" schools have not. 

I have a student that does nothing.  All day.  Every class.  Sits and does nothing.  His house was just raided by the DEA and they hand-cuffed him and all because he's tall and could be mistaken for an adult.

I doubt the role of the executive branch of government is very important to him when he's being raised in a home like that.
The content is the content.  The teachers share the content (yes, in varying degrees of effectiveness).  But a room full of receptive students vs a room full of kids that hate every moment of being there is a bigger issue than money, standards, rural vs urban, school boards, etc.

Well, having lived through a riot during which nearby city blocks were burned, gives me a different perspective on things.

In that case, the local FD could not help matters much, as they could not get to the burning sites.

Hence, especially during a riot.

What part of my post is not clear? 

I said rural fire = one home. City fire could be a city block.

Especially during a riot - which has happened, throughout time.

Teachers in the CPS make 25 percent more than their counterparts in the suburbs make. Is it hazard pay (only half kidding here)?

Would you work for CPS, knowing you could make $100K+/year?

Teachers don't want to work with students from homes that don't value education.  Supply and demand, no?

The Navajo Rez paid very well and teacher housing was only $300/mo because it was in the middle of nowhere and people didn't want to live/teach there.  Same thing, but different reason.

I wouldn't say people cling to them. Anecdotes can definitely affect how one views things. Perspective and all that.

Sure.  Fair.  But you can also be aware how your own anecdotes affect how you view things and recognize the the entirely of the rest of the planet might provide more valid data.

tbh, I'm looking to get out of teaching.  It's so very much worse than it was my first 5-10 years.  It sucks.  Part of it is changing times and maybe I'm just becoming a crotchety old man.  Part of it is working almost exclusively in Title 1 schools my whole career...but it sucks.

I'm looking around for something that will still contribute/advance my same retirement system and is quiet and boring.  I just want to be a worker bee, show up, be productive, and go home.  That's not really a thing as a teacher.

And yet I've never experienced a riot, despite living in big (or big enough) cities for most of my life.  Our anecdotes clash.
