I know I used to sit in "dorm rooms" decrying the ills of the world, and probably had some pretty immature notions about how to fix them.  It's far easier to note an issue than to propose a realistic fix.  Just blaming a thing on "government" or "stupid people" might be true, or not, but it is hardly useful.

Humanity has a LOT is ills, they are easy to spot, but anything with realistic fixes is probably already fixed, leaving problems without realistic solutions.  It's akin to the climate change issue, if the models are reasonably correct, we're going to experience "problems" in a few decades, but nobody has any realistic approaches to avoiding them.  It helps to be fatalistic in that sense.
Thanks, dad.

One useful rule I had with my kids was, if they didn't like a decision I made, they had to offer a plausible alternative, things like where to go out to dinner etc.  It mostly shut them up from complaining with no solution.  Sometimes they'd say "I'm tired of Bob Evans, can we go to Blue Ash Chili instead?".  Fair enough.

How could we realistically improve our food options?

Look to Italy to improve our food options. Europe in general. They are generally appalled at all the crap we add to food here.

When I was a kid, I'd go to the grocery store with my Dad Saturday mornings.  He never spent much time with me, so I guess it was one way to be around him.  And yes, he did the shopping, not my Mom.  A thing I recall is how fruits would be in season and available, like peaches, or you ate them frozen or canned.  Strawberries I recall came frozen in these weird cardboard things.  Peaches of course were, and are, canned, and not very tasty.  Corn was like this of course, maybe we had lettuce all year?

My Dad wouldn't eat a whole host of dinners, so this was his way of controlling what my Mom cooked.

I would stop at a grocery near where we lived on the way home from work, buy whatever I was going to fix for dinner, and collect the kids at school (they had after school care).  We ate a lot of spaghetti.  I recall the Hunt's spaghetti sauce was 99 cents per, so I could make it pretty cheap even if I added ground beef and onion/celery/whatever.  The funny thing was my daughter would always order spaghetti at Bob Evans.  We kept them in business for a while.  They had good kids' meals.  I was all over discounted kids' meals, one adult and three kids.

What is an example of "crap" we add to food here the Euros eschew?

HFCS to start. So many preservatives. Too much sugar, salt.

How to eat healthy?

Stay out the aisles and shop the perimeter.

I've never been clear on the problem with HFCS myself.  It's basically cheap sugar, no worse than regular sugar.  I do try and limit my sugar intake.

They have a lot of "processed foods" in France of course, and quite a bit of it includes HFCS under other names.

I had my annual physical Friday.

Numbers are great. A helluva turnaround in one year, as she termed it.

Namely

Cholesterol from 250 (!) to 145
Blood Sugar from 145 (!) to 92
Weight down 37 (!) pounds

It was not drugs, that's for sure.

Anyway, all those bad things are causing me to go get my chest cracked open in 3 weeks.

Wanna know how I did it?

Shop the perimeter (except for rice, pasta, canned veggies, frozen veggies).

The problem with HFCS is that our bodies can’t break it down and metabolize it.  It is sugar that’s been heated to a zillion degrees, and it becomes a preservative.

Best diet I ever went on simply eliminated it. No HFCS allowed.  You can buy ketchup, jelly, soda, peanut butter, virtually any number of foods without HFHC    Anyway went from 242 on January 6th to 208 on April 1.

additionally- it makes many foods taste horrible. Try a Coke or a Pepsi with HFHC Next to Coke or Pepsi without it, but they have real sugar.  ( the way they used to be made !).  You can still buy them, but you have to look closely in the grocery store  Or try the two ketchups next to each other.
The stuff that is free of HFCS tastes way better- but you don’t have an expiration date that goes out a year.
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

I don't think this is true, at all.

Maybe you have some reference to it.  It does contain fructose, which is problematic, but in about the same proportion as sucrose (table sugar).  Chemically, it's VERY similar to sucrose in terms of fructose:glucose ratios.  I think fructose (fruit sugar) should be avoided when possible, but that includes table sugar which is about half fructose.
