Isn’t this a local choice?

The school board where I lived was nonpartisan.

So, the problem is local politicians?  Everywhere?  And there is no solution?  OK then.

School lunches are largely not free, the problem is "government", and they broadly aren't very nutritious.  Does that sum it up?

FWIW, the school system my kids were in was not known for being parsimonious.

I know I used to sit in "dorm rooms" decrying the ills of the world, and probably had some pretty immature notions about how to fix them.  It's far easier to note an issue than to propose a realistic fix.  Just blaming a thing on "government" or "stupid people" might be true, or not, but it is hardly useful.

Humanity has a LOT is ills, they are easy to spot, but anything with realistic fixes is probably already fixed, leaving problems without realistic solutions.  It's akin to the climate change issue, if the models are reasonably correct, we're going to experience "problems" in a few decades, but nobody has any realistic approaches to avoiding them.  It helps to be fatalistic in that sense.

At the university level, yes.  At the District level, at least in PA, they are very thin.
Very different than my experience.

I can sort of understand this, if a campaign thinks they are likely to win but close, they might spend like crazy late thinking they can pay the bills later, if they win.  In a billion dollar campaign, overspending by $20 million isn't much, and yes, I realize it's reported they used private jets and had other dubious expenses.

It is akin to having a budget of $1,000 and over spending by $20.  As I recall, most campaigns end up in debt and unable to pay some bills.  They usually get bailed out after the fact, we need an Ambassador to Belize for example.  Of course, if you lose .... someone likely gets stiffed.

$1.5 Billion in 15 weeks. That's quite the spend - only to lose.

I think they spent in curious ways at times, but it's not unusual for a losing campain to spend a hoard of money.  I'm never sure what happens, I'd guess the debt usually is just never made good.  Maybe someone sues?  I dunno the particulars, but I recall a lot of stories about campaigns ending with heavy debt and not paying bills, and never is the story continued.

corporations are evil and the folks at the top never lose, only profit handsomely

The 2024 presidential election featured sky-high turnout, approaching the historic levels of the 2020 contest and contradicting long-held conventional political wisdom that Republicans struggle to win races in which many people vote.

According to Associated Press elections data, more than 152 million ballots were cast in this year’s race between Republican Donald Trump, now the president-elect, and Democrat Kamala Harris, the vice president, with hundreds of thousands of more still being tallied in slower-counting states such as California. When those ballots are fully tabulated, the number of votes will come even closer to the 158 million in the 2020 presidential contest, which was the highest turnout election since women were given the right to vote more than a century ago.

“Trump is great for voter turnout in both parties,” said Eitan Hersh, a political scientist at Tufts University.

The former president’s victory in both the Electoral College and popular vote — Trump currently leads Harris by nearly 3 million votes nationwide — also contradicts the belief in politics that Democrats, not Republicans, benefit from high-turnout elections.
