I don't think an increase of 5-10% is "soaring", to me it's well within any margin of error in their estimates.  They "guess" how much exists in cities that don't report.  Much of this is estimation anyway.

I think could say crime is "up a lot" over the past 3 years.

Crime is down, but if you squint and convince yourself to live in an alternate reality, maybe crime is actually up. It amazes me the things people will tell themselves to justify what their candidate tells them.

The FBI figures now say crime rates are up, some.  This wasn't reported widely.

It's the data we have, so far as I know.  Maybe crime has ebbed since, I can't find information on that point.  I know a lot of folks think crime is "through the roof", I don't.

We get reports locally that crime rates have dropped here in midtown.

FBI quietly revised 2022 crime data to show violent offenses rose rather than dropped (msn.com)

2023 revisions not out yet. But the FBI will quietly revise them, no doubt.

CNN won't report it.

The same entity reported that crime was up 2020 and 2021,  they are called "Midtown Blue", a sort of local police force here.  I view all these numbers are "suspect" unless there is a significant trend over years.  I think a bump of 5% nationally is inside any margin of error.

There is no mystery here. Trump is lying, his supporters justify it, and look at slight adjustments from years ago as reasons to believe him than what is in front of their face.

It would be nice if they cited which 88 cities were included in the report.  But, I personally view these shifts as being within any likely margin of error, which doesn't mean crime is "soaring" of course.
