Bud Light is cheaper
Might as well light money on fire if you order a soda instead of a beer

Yeah I've noticed beer and wine has basically held steady, which is weird. But makes it financially responsible to consume more calories with beer and wine.
Seriously?

Not here or in Illinois or Wisconsin. It's about 50 percent more than it was when we moved here in 2020.

The inflation was uneven, as noted above.  Some things got cheaper, I was ooggling new TVs at Costco thinking this $1299 model used to be $3,599.  Most consumers "see it" in gas prices (which have moderated) and food prices.  We see gas prices daily even if we don't fill up, and food we see weekly or more.  We usually have a rough idea how much we'd spend "before" and now it's "more", often exaggerated in our minds.

I buy cans of coffee at Costco that used to be $10, easy to remember, for a 3 lb can of "Columbian", and now it's $14.  I don't have as clear an idea what eggs cost before versus now, I know the price jumped and then settled back some.  Our qualitative assessment of inflation is usually not accurate because we notice big price jumps and tend to ignore things that didn't go up.
At least double.

I noticed no appreciable increase in beer/wine prices here except at restaurants.  Maybe a 12er of beer went from $16 to $17.

I buy the same wine by the case and the price hasn't budged.

Craft beer prices increased dramatically over the 7-10 years preceding the pandemic.  The "hops shortage" was cited.  In reality it was mostly just AB-InBev buying up the global hops supply in an anti-competitive effort to drive small craft breweries out of business.  It didn't work, but it did significantly increase the cost of good beer.

CPI inflation report August 2024: (cnbc.com)

Good news on the inflation front.  I'm actually suprised it has dropped to this extent this fast without a recession.

Some people think we are in recession. Others do not. Depends on who you talk to/listen to, and also on where you are.

When I lived through recessions in the past, it was noticeable around me.  Businesses closed, construction stopped, and of course the stock market tanked.

Where we live here is growing like crazy.  It's not a recession here anyway.  And the government figures show pretty good GDP growth.

I'm looking forward to our trip, once we're there, but not the plane part.  We'll leave here for the airport at 12:30 PM and arrive at the hotel in Istanbul probably around 7 PM ... tomorrow.

There is a direct flight but I didn't book that one.

Chicagoland is in micro-recession. Building is slowing down big-time. And that I feel, obviously.

I don't really notice the prices at Costco, generally. If it's written on my list, I've basically already committed to buying it, so it just goes in the cart. And then I see a big number at checkout.

Around here, there is a place referred to as "West Midtown", it's over across the freeway, and had been a large group of mostly derelict small light industrial stuff.  Folks noticed property values were low back when, and now it's exploding, with no mass transit and the roads are a mess.  But it's cheaper than midtown and seems to be "hip", but no park nearby.  Other areas are growing as well, places like "Old Fourth Ward" and Inman Park.

Here now, an aerial tour of West Midtown's changing skyline | Urbanize Atlanta
