On May 25, 2023, FDA approved Paxlovid for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in adults who are at high risk for progression to severe COVID-19, including hospitalization or death. FDA has determined that Paxlovid is safe and effective when used in accordance with the FDA-approved labeling.

I don't know much about the whole Paxlovid thing.

I know that at 46, in the best physical shape of my adult life, and having no known comorbidities, if I get COVID again I'm not bothering with a prescription just for the sniffles.

Yup.

And on July 17, 2024, the study I referenced earlier was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, with the conclusion that Paxlovid is not effective as postexposure prophylaxis for COVID 19.

I'll be AT the TX-OU game so I'll miss all of the others.  The price you pay for attending live in person.

Actually I'll probably be able to catch some of the other games at one of the biergartens inside the State Fair, especially now that my kids are old enough to wander the Fair without me.

apparently, according to some news sources, a new wave of COVID is coming and there just happens to be a new vaccine that everyone should take

Shit... Teaching math to a 6th grader (home sick) is annoying. She's multiplying decimals.

But I can't teach her how I'd do it (in my head).

  • 14 * 0.06 - Easy. 14 times 6 is 84. Divide by 100 (same as moving the decimal two places). 0.84
  • 23 * 0.22 - Okay, a little more complicated. Start with 23 times 22. Square of 22 is 484. Add 22 more for 506. Move decimal two places over. 5.06.

Now I've gotta re-learn how to multiply decimals the appropriate way to teach her, so I don't teach her all the shorthand stuff grown-ups do instead of an actual method.

I think this is expected, and not much news really, it keeps changing, and the vaccines change like with the flu.

Paxlovid really is intended for folks who are likely to be hit hard, not sniffles.  Anyway, it was approved for use pretty late in the game, though the EUA was earlier.

Pfizer stock has really struggled since 2021.

I think I related an interesting discussion I had last December with my doc about RSV vaccine.  He said, "I'm told we're supposed to have a discussion." and then related how he was "Dr. Vaccine", I am a strong believer in vaccines." ... but not this one.  He said RSV for a healthy adult is akin to a cold, not the flu, and I was in good health, so he'd give me a script for it if I wanted, but wasn't a fan.

I didn't get it.  It's a Pfizer product, he said they were pushing it, and he didn't see a need, in so many words.  My wife did get it before I had this discussion.

If anyone is interested in France, this is a decent summary.  Macron did not personally lose the election, he was not voted out of office, obviously, his party came in second, so three parties are now vying for power in their lower house.  Macron has exclusive and total power to choose the Prime Minister, so he's not doing anything illegal there, nor is he somehow ignoring an election outcome.  The position of Prime Minister is, well, not that important, roughly like a SotH.

The vote for President isn't until 2027.  He'll be in power until then  barring something unusual.  Some think he called the snap election thinking the right wingers would win, and they came in third.
