Some view this zoning thing as a power grab.  Less paranoid people might says its Democrats trying to fix problems they've caused by spreading it out and causing problems elsewhere.

Republicans Against Duplexes
You can call me a conservative.

A conservative who happens to work with developers to provide affordable housing for those who truly need it.

You have no idea how difficult these projects are to get through the approval process.

Most of it has to do with your beloved big government. Some of it is also NIMBY - and we are not talking about building these in Winnetka, IL. The one I'm finishing up now (started in late 2019) is in Elgin, IL. You can look up both of those municipalities to compare and contrast the differences.

Get back to me with your thoughts on something I know a whole lot about.

Lulz at the idea of the federal government making laws for local zoning.

Yeah, whatever issues there are with local zoning, the notion the Feds would make it better is .... not one to which I subscribe.

I also think the housing shortage has other fundamental issues of far more import.

This is correct and also completely irrelevant, since my (and Obama's) entire point is that easing up the restrictions would be good

"I'm here from government, and I'm here to help."

"Yes, I know, government caused your problems, but this time it'll be different."

"No, really."

I wish Obama had more to do with policy. Used his speech to talk about easing zoning restrictions. What a boss. A president who (1) cares about actual problems the country has and (2) can communicate solutions to them. We were spoiled.
Lolwut.

Well, that's an entertaining take on Obama, for me anyway.  Zoning restrictions.  Boy, that wasn't really high on my list of "to dos".

I personally don't think Obama is very active at all in "running the country" these days".  He's more worried about his Final Four selections.
he's been a very active and powerful figure in Democrat party politics behind the scenes since leaving office. there's plenty of evidence of that in all the reporting that's been done on the topic. he's basically hand selected the last 3 Democrat party candidates for President.

obviously there isn't really any evidence that he's "running the country" and I don't think he is doing that- but the power he has is real and I think it'd be best for the entire country if he just fucked off and went away and stayed out of the internal politics of his party and let the voters of the party pick their candidate for President at the ballot box. kind of like every other President I can remember in history after leaving office.

I think the federal government is the only entity that could loosen up building restrictions nationwide. I also think the housing shortage is mostly caused by government regulation at multiple levels.

Ending zoning restrictions to allow the construction of large housing projects for low income Democrat voters in the suburbs. Everything that arrogant jackass did was related to maintaining and expanding political power.
pretty much this. guy was an abomination. nothing but a figure head and went along with all the very worst policies of the administration before him. slick smooth talking son of a bitch though. gotta hand it to him. he was able to put a pretty face on an ugly empire, and lot of dumbskis bought it hook line and sinker and still do.

My opinion is that Obama completely resigned and faded into oblivion, and has had zero impact on anything of import.  He enjoys the sedate life, giving a few speeches at times, hosting adoring fans at times, being seen at all the right places, just taking it easy.

I think he pretty much did that when he was President, his public schedule was shall we say "light", day after day after day.

It does a good job of threading the needle of inflation being the biggest problem in the country and also doing anything about it is evil.
Lol. No.

We have inflation due to many factors. Local zoning restrictions ain't one of them.

You can't do that to people who own land in this country.

If I buy land zoned commercial and some unelected government twat comes in and declares it residential, some unelected government twat is gonna take a bullet because that unelected government twat just decreased my land value to a third of what it was the hour before.

It would be much easier to eliminate most of the Federal and State agencies that put up the hoops that need to be jumped through to get a project like this done.

I strongly disagree, and FWIW, so does my realtor friend.  I think this notion is stupid and ignorant.
