30 percent is my standard tip if the service is stellar. People around here are mostly genuinely happy and nice, so it's mostly always 30 percent and sometimes even more.
How do you judge the service at Jersey Mike's?

Never been. I make sandwiches at home and tip myself generously in the form of Tito's and cigars.

In the case of takeout or counter service, I may leave $2 or some such, for the effort of packaging, I guess. All they do it hand me a bag that I carry home and place on my table. Takeout is pretty much limited to Chinese for us. I think I've maybe dined inside a Chinese joint 5 times in my life. If that.

I did one time order delivery for Subway, and it asks for how much you'd like to tip your "sandwich artist". WTF is that?

Pizza delivery drivers.. I'll tip a bit, maybe $5 or something.

We don't do a lot of food delivery.

Well, a lot of places are embracing tips, especially fast food places. Not a fan of tipping for food I have yet to receive and for service that is pretty uniform. Feels like just an extra fee.

It is just that, and it's bullshit.

I saw a guy that did a commentary on this, and I thought it was a pretty good rule.

That being:

If I order at a counter, or on my feet ..... no tip.  Seems reasonable to me.  Basically the same rules that used to apply, like 20 minutes ago, before this tipping everybody nonsense got out of control.

It's happening because of inflation.

Businesses cannot afford to pay their people more (for work a caveman could do) so they are trying to get them more money by suggesting tips, because the caveman can't get by on a paycheck alone.

I'm self-employed, with some partners. We have to give our employees raises so other companies don't steal them - and they try all the time. Engineers are hard to find. As a result, none of us partners have gotten a raise since 2020.

We partners have a LOT LESS real income than we did in January 2021.

Well, the customer is also not immune to inflation, including me, so I'll avoid participating in supplementing someone else's employees incomes when I can.  And cavemen aren't supposed to get by on their paychecks alone.  I was once a caveman, I know.  And I also still have 2 cavemen aged 18, that just graduated high school.  They can't make it either on their kennel attendant salaries at the local veterinary office.  Such is life.

Besides, from what I gather from reading on here, you're doing fine without that raise since 2020.  I commend you for that, but I'll not cry a tear for you either.  Smoke a cuban, and raise a glass of expensive whisky to your success.

I didn't say we're hurting. Just not as well off as we once were. My wife is on a pension and SS. I'm essentially fixed income.

Certainly not looking for sympathy. Not my style. Just pointing out that our disposable income has been GREATLY reduced.

I smoke Swishers and I don't drink whiskey anymore. Just clear stuff - Gin and Vodka.

And since gin is really nothing more than just vodka flavored with juniper botanicals, you drink vodka and vodka!
