I am a bit fascinated with the point made above that two intellligent learned people can disagree on politics to such a degree.  One might suppose that at a given level of intelligence and learning folks would coalesce on a group of basic concepts as being "the best".

The other possible answer to this is that these two folks really agree on most things and sensationalize a few areas where they have somewhat different opinions on things.  Take taxes for example, I can see how one might think a tax on the wealthy is a good idea and the other might disagree, it's a technical matter really.  On immigration, kind of the same thing, there is an argument to be made for immigration, even of the "illegal" type, being good for the country overall.

I try and see the "good" in both positions, if they are reasonable.  And I try and remember that my own ideas have evolved over the years, some more "liberal" and some more "conservative".

I pointed out that if these people don't watch TV or read newspapers, then the idea of the liberal media giving marching orders is kinda silly. It's a contradiction.
When we on the right comment or complain about the "liberal media" we are NOT merely talking about NYT, NBC, CBS, WaPo, etc. Media includes "entertainment" media.

There has been a big brouhaha recently over Netflix apparently giving a large sum of money to Kamala.

I honestly don't even know if it is true and the amount is suspect but a large number of my FB friends on the left have posts up about joining Netflix or upgrading their memberships while my friends on the right are posting (see attached screen capture).

Netflix, FB, SNL, Hollywood in general. Leftists bias in entertainment has a bigger impact than leftist bias in "news" especially today when we can all choose our own "news".

Netflix, the company, did NOT make that donation.  One of the cofounders made the donation, he's multizillionaire, so $7 million is a tiny sum for him.

Most public companies try and maintain a low political profile.

Liberal is not a bad thing.   Neither is conservative.

In fact there is a time and place for both, and hopefully ( and it is often true) they act as counter balances to each other and keep each other and check.

What can be very frustrating about American politics in today’s world is that it really isn’t about liberal or conservative. It’s more about hiding your position and being dishonest about it.

One of my main complaints is that I can see a lot of compromise possible on a number of major issues, and neither party sees that as being in their interest, so it doesn't happen (but rarely, and with indifferent results).  Each party benefits from keeping "us" angry and incensed so we get involved and donate time and money because that OTHER party is clearly EVIL and will both end democracy and deprive women of the vote and make us all woke gay transgender types and raise my taxes.

It's SYSTEMIC and I don't see a viable solution.

I'm going to push back on this some. "conservative" media is pretty powerful in its own right, and a lot of it seems completely allergic to reality. Feels like conservatives are held to almost no standard at all when it comes to reporting facts. Twitter was pushing the "reporting" that Joe Biden was either dead or on death's door.

Which sources/outlets would you describe as "conservative media?"

Fox News obviously, but what else?

^^^^^

I have no idea who that is. And I'm okay with that.

James Woods, on the other hand, is an artistic genius.

But I think we can name on two hands the number of Hollywood stars that are conservative and speak out conservatively, and then we could easily just say "All the rest of the 99.9% are liberal and speak out that way."

Oh holy crap, just did a Google search on that image and that's what Ted Nugent looks like these days?  WOW.  That's... different.

I'll set aside my disagreements with this temporarily. For the sake of discussion, even if everything you said here is true, what difference does it make?

Yes, in this era we can and do select our news media but the conservative segment of that is, IMHO simply an echo chamber engaged in "preaching to the choir". Most of the liberal segment is the same thing, both are mostly talking to the converted rather than actually getting converts.

This is why I think that non-"news" entertainment is vastly more important. I can choose conservative "news" but I can't choose a Conservative version of Hollywood.

I actually don't know the political leanings of a lot of stars, not that I pay much attention to them.  I know some are very vocally active, and that might make us think the rest are as well.  I agree Hollywood broadly speaking is more liberal than "America".

On rare occasion, I'll watch cable news, if a story is breaking usually.  We get a channel that shows CNN/Fox/MSNBC/BBC all at once, you can toggle between them for audio.  It's useful I find.  I have watched a while back a few minutes of the Fox News "news hour" or whatever it's called and it seems "balanced" to me, similar to what I'd see on CNN.  Where some go left or right is with their "non news" shows.
