There had been rumors all along that they were cheating, but man, this is 12 year old baseball.  They already combined 3 districts to make one mega district, and still were pulling in non district players

I appreciate that, but also remember that I don't exactly have my finger on the pulse of "ordinary Americans", a group I don't feel myself a part of :57:

I don't watch the news. I don't talk to people more than necessary, and usually try to avoid anything political if I'm forced to.

I know a little about human psychology, in how people respond to the abstract (Kamala MIGHT be the nominee but Biden is still running) vs the concrete (Biden has withdrawn and the Dem party has already made Kamala the presumptive nominee) and how that change can make big differences in opinions. But that's an idea that may not be true in this case if people had more passion for or against Kamala than I was previously aware. Personally, I've paid very little attention to her over the last 4 years, not enough to form an opinion based on anything real. But I could be the outlier here.
I agree with your thinking that the polls from before Biden dropped out that asked about Harris as a hypothetical are suspect because people think about hypotheticals differently.

Harris' #'s are lower on both favorable AND unfavorable because she has higher undecided/unknown #'s. As I see it that gives her both a higher ceiling AND a lower floor than Biden because as she becomes more familiar those undecided/unknown will move to either favorable or unfavorable.

Fundamentally this is a good thing for D's because they were losing before so the downside risk is minimal.

There was a reason the wheels came off of the 2020 Harris campaign 50 feet out of the garage.

She COULD be a better candidate today, I don't know, Carville thinks she is.  We'll see.  It's still the economy, stupid, I forget who first said that ....:67:

Ya, Kamala might look good with all of the Democratic Party's media, smoke, and mirrors behind her.

But I also think there's another dynamic. The instant a candidate you didn't want becomes your party's candidate, you're forced into a state of cognitive dissonance.

In this case, for people on the left that view her negatively, it would be trying to reconcile two things:

  • I don't particularly like Kamala Harris (for whatever reason).
  • I identify as a Democrat and need to support the Democrat Party nominee for President.

I would argue that one of those things will mentally break. People don't like Kamala Harris. They'll either break with the party or they'll suddenly find a way to tell themselves that Kamala Harris is a lot better than they thought she was.

I'd further argue that the latter happens a LOT more than the former. In a mostly binary political world, they look over at the Republican Party led by Trump and they know they CANNOT identify with that, so they have to make peace with Kamala rather than change their identity. They may not like it; they'll still do it.

The former is what happened to Trump with the never-Trumper movement. People who were Republicans, many of them lifelong and prominent, said "If backing the party means backing Trump, I'm out." I think most would still say they're Republicans, because identity is sticky, but they're sitting there harkening to return to some pre-Trump version of the Republican Party that certainly doesn't exist now, and may never again. They haven't turned Democrat; they've become politically homeless.

The difficult bit for independents who view her negatively is that they face a different sort of cognitive dissonance:

  • I don't like Trump and don't want him to be our President.
  • I don't like Kamala and don't want her to be our President.

One way out of that is apathy and not voting. Another is to allow whichever one you hate more to determine your thought and I'd argue that if you do that the opposite one will naturally start looking better and better, until the cognitive dissonance breaks and you say "well X isn't so bad, I'm sure they'll do SOME things I like, and it's better than Y after all!" and you'll start feeling better about voting for X.

That's just my thought on the psychology angle behind it.

I should highlight what I wrote long ago on the blog in a post titled "Humans Are Pack Animals Who Pretend To Reason"...

I tend to view our reasoning capabilities as a species with quite a bit of suspicion. I think we often make "decisions" based on visceral identity factors rather than reason, and then we use our reason to rationalize why we made that decision. We lie to ourselves, we allow ourselves to be influenced by factors that we shouldn't, and we have a whole host of cognitive filters that blind ourselves to the fact that we're doing it.

I sincerely TRY not to do this. I try to be cognizant that it happens and put up mental armor against it. Yet, I know I fail. Frequently.

I believe most people aren't even aware of it, and think that they're perfectly reasonable androids following logic and reason and not complex biochemical and evolutionary influences that are occurring below the level of conscious thought.

So I suspect that in the case of Kamala, there are going to be a lot of people who perhaps had unfavorable opinions of her and will soon have more favorable opinions of her. They'll tell you either that they learned new evidence and changed their minds, or [most of them] will tell you that they never had the previous opinion at all and it'll be flushed down the memory hole. But in reality I doubt it will be a RATIONAL change for most of them--it will be the point at which the unfavorable opinion of Kamala comes into conflict with some other belief/opinion they hold dear, such as "I am a Democrat", and cognitive dissonance will break the opinion of Kamala without any conscious rational change.

We're all just up-jumped monkeys, folks. We pretend not to be, but all that evolutionary monkey shit, to quote Joe Rogan, is still in there.

LOTE is how many folks vote, including me when I used to vote.

We may be over thinking the dynamics of this.

Speaking of pack animals, this is from Carville today:

"“But having said that, there’s been real growth in Vice President Harris. I mean, you can just see the difference,” he continued later in the interview, highlighted by Mediaite. “And she just looked so confident to me yesterday.”

He added, “I liked what I saw, I’ll be honest with you.”

VP Harris did better with a teleprompter than President Biden but that's a low bar.

I like them!

Of course, I'm largely saying that because I think they're hideous, and anything that makes ND look terrible is therefore something I like to see :57:
