It's the 24-hour "news" channels.

I'm visiting my dad and his wife and if it was up to her, FN would be blaring on the TV, 24/7.  No matter how repetitive it is.  FN HAS to villainize Biden and MSNBC HAS to villainize Trump, etc.  If they don't, no one watches.

People can remain civil if they get propaganda here and there.  Just the 30 min nightly news.  Just a magazine article.  Just a website.
But many expose themselves to it every waking minute and THAT radicalizes you.  It can't not.
Good post. I like local news too.

We watch Fox News for one show only. Bret Baier. It's 6PM Eastern so not a lot of people West of Eastern get to watch him. He's balanced.

I'm finding myself tuning into CNN a bit more these days, for more balance, and they seemed to have turned a corner on that station.

ABD/NBC/CBS don't get any of my time unless it's football.

With the internet it's easier than ever to ensure "the media" tells you exactly what you want to hear
You have to be careful, for sure.

Not only was that hill coming up from the river steep and tall, Kentucky is obviously quite hilly between there and Lexington.

A lot of the Civil War battlefields are surrounded by hilly terrain.  Going up South Mountain to confront Lee at Antietam would have been a slog, and they were under fire.

Union forces somehow rushed up Lookout Mountain and dislodged Confederate positions in part because the Rebels couldn't shoot down the steep slope very well.

Kennesaw Mountain isn't much of a mountain, but it's steep.

Yeah, I'd have been thinking "Let'em go and I'll head home."
If you ever get back to the Antietam area, this place had great Crabcakes:

It is right on the AT, we hiked in.

NBC/ABC/CBS all lean noticeably left.  They have for my entire life.  It's what got Dan Rather famously shit-canned.  He's just the one that got caught completely crossing the line.
Whether they lean this way or that depends on who is judging it.  I know some folks (on line) who think the NYT sold out and is right wing, one even thinks MSNBC is right wing, and some other folks say Fox News sold out and is left wing.

I just use news web sites for "news" and scan a lot of them, I find the business sites to be least "partisan" in general.

I've been interviewed on CNN twice by John King and felt the second time my comments were somewhat distorted.  I thought John seemed like a nice fellow at least.  You talk for maybe 45 minutes and they excerpt maybe 90 seconds.  It's pretty easy to paint a picture if one wishes.

I like crab cakes, I fear my wife is no longer a fan of battlefields.  I would still like to see Shiloh someday, though I expect it's a lot different than back when.

Sure, but since I'm not an idiotic internet nutjob, I can note that the big 3 networks have long been left-leaning.  This isn't news, polls of reporters and staff at all three over the decades, have consistently come back with the vast majority leaning heavily left.

And they've never been capable of ignoring that bias in their reporting.  Indeed, it became such a holy war for Dan Rather that the asshole got himself fired over it.

As you say, despite the facts, it's pretty easy to paint a picture if one wishes.

asking obvious questions and having the ability to consider all scenarios does not make one a conspiracy theorist.

there were massive, catastrophic security failures that day by the secret service. it really could just be insane amounts of negligence by a failing security agency that is headed by a woman who was working in security for PepsiCo guarding bags of doritos and cases of mountain dew before Biden appointed her to her current job- an agency that is now full of DEI hires- and supposedly the dumb bitch running the secret service has initiated a DEI program to have 30% of the SS agents be women, people of color, homosexual, gender fluid, queer, what the f*ckever else- by 2030. Which is insane. How about we just hire the most decorated, lethal former special operators to protect the life of Presidents, former Presidents, and leading Presidential candidates? You know....MEN that are 6'+, 200 lbs.+ and are trained killers with combat experience. Is that too much to ask? Just saying. And how about the secret service is headed up by someone who has experience in combat or in guarding peoples' lives, not someone who was making sure Mountain Dew cases and bags of Cheetos weren't getting stolen?

lady needs to be fired by Biden effective immediately and there needs to be massive independent investigation into what happened and how.
Jon Stewart covered this and it was hilarious. He said that within hours of the assassination attempt he "learned":
  • That Trump set it up to make himself look good.
  • That Biden set it up to take out Trump.
Etc.

I generally ascribe to Hanlon's Razor:
"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence. "

Trump has already been president for 4 years.  The world didn't end.

Biden has already been president for almost 4 years.  The world didn't end.
This is a great point that I think everyone should stop and reflect on.

I believe that this has not been the case since 1892 when former President Grover Cleveland was the Democratic nominee against incumbent Republican Benjamin Harrison.

The fact that they have each served a term without the world ending should stand as proof that the world won't end in 2025-2028 just because Trump/Biden gets elected in 2024.

This, IMHO, is a disaster.

It goes WAY beyond partisanship. We can know vastly more about topics that interest us than we could 40 years ago but the trade-off is that we get no exposure to things that we don't seek out.

Both sides attempt to paint a picture that it would be a disaster if the other fellow won, we all know this.  I ask myself how my personal life has changed under Biden or Trump.  That is selfish, but it's a factor.  My freedoms are pretty much the same, for me personally.  I've done well financially with Biden.  But if we elect "X", it'll mean the end of everything.  Apparently.

I've been here a long time. You've all known me a long time. I think I've built a reputation over that time of being a clear-headed thinker, and one not prone to hysteria or chicken little behavior. I'm the guy on the airplane that if someone is sitting next to me scared of flying, say "Just watch me. If I'm not freaking out, everything is normal, and you shouldn't freak out either. If I start freaking out, something's wrong."

I remember when people were saying that Bush II was going to declare martial law. I remember when people were saying the same about Obama. I didn't believe either and thought it was lunacy. I've believed that every President of my lifetime--save one--has been an honorable man trying to do their best for the country. Even some who were a fair bit slimy like Clinton. When they assumed the office, they realized that their purpose was now bigger than themselves. I obviously haven't always agreed with their policies, but I have not questioned their motives.

I honestly believe that Trump is categorically different, and a danger to everything I hold dear about this country. I believe that he holds nothing in the world higher than his own self-interest. I believe he'll do anything and everything, legal or illegal, Constitutional or not, in the service of the one thing he holds dear--himself.  About the only redeeming thing I can say about him is that what happens in America reflects on him if he's President, so at least the interests of the country are loosely aligned with his interest in gratifying his own ego.

This is my belief after nearly 46 years of life, having studied and written about politics a lot more than the average person, and not being part of either "team"--although I'd lean more R than D. All I can say is that I desperately hope I'm wrong.
I find it odd that you feel this way, and especially this strongly.

I think the best response is @utee94 's comment that I already quoted. The guy already was President for four years.
