It would be hilarious if Trump pardoned all the Jan. 6th rioters in his second term.

One thing that always bothered me about the J6 events...I've read reports and seen footage where the capitol police or some other official entity actually let the protestors in the capitol...and maybe even welcomed them in.  I can't discern whether this is real or not.  But, if the job of the capitol police is to protect the capitol...and they were armed.....why did they not use their firearms early on in the melee?  I believe I would have...unless I had orders to the contrary.  Only one person got shot coming in a window (Ashlee Babbit)....

A few rounds early on may have dispelled anybody from trying to enter.  They had police inside the building...what were the police outside doing?

The whole thing makes no sense to me.

Stormed it.
Gained entry.
Moved about the place with no resistance.
Stole things.
Vandalized it.
.
Yes, sacked.
Milled about it.
Stumbled into it.
Moved about the place with no resistance (which begs the question, why wasn't there more security present?)
Stole some things
Vandalized some things
Took some selfies
No raping, no burning, minimal pillaging

Yeah, no, that's not "sacked."

The fake elector scheme is very serious. And my stance is if it is true, bring forth the evidence and charge him criminally with an attempted criminal conspiracy.
That's, uhh, exactly what they did do: https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2023/08/politics/annotated-text-copy-trump-indictment-dg/

Trump's been doing everything in his power to try to delay that trial until after the election, since (unlike the hush money or GA case) they're federal charges and he can pardon himself.

And now, of course, Trump's lawyers say that SCOTUS' recent decision means he's off the hook anyway. https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-fake-electors-scheme-supreme-court-1919928

Here's an investing question for you gurus.  I recall back in 2008, I decided to move my IRA over to a Roth and pay the taxes.  My IRA wasn't very big at the time, but then 2008 happened, and the value of it shrunk appreciably, so I moved it back to the IRA witnin the 6 month window.  It had still shrunk, but I wouldn't be paying taxes on the original value.

So, I was mulling doing something now, my IRA is quite a bit larger for various reasons, so I'd only move part of it, but I'm concerned with the market being at record highs and going higher (DJIA +600 today).  I need to pull some out to pay bills, but I'm loathe to recharacterize much at these prices.

Early on they were outside, with barriers, and I think hoping the crowd could be contained.  Just firing shots into the crowd, which was rather large, would not have been useful at all, and probably worse than neutral.  I think they had ROEs not to use deadly force in such instances.  You see riot control police acting similarly, they don't resort to use of firearms unless they get shot at.

Why the woman was shot remains a mystery to me, I think that officer panicked, but the review was not made public.

The video of police escorting folks around the Capitol is misleading, in my view, they were attempting to corral the protesters and escort them OUT.  In most cases, the doors they were holding open were EXIT doors, maybe in all cases.  The building had already been breached at that point, trying to detain or deter the rioters would have been a bad decision.  And many of the rioters who arrived after the initial breach did indeed just wander around.

The events seemingly have to be portrayed as ENTIRELY a massive violent insurrection OR just civilians strolling about taking selfies.  Neither is correct in my view.

In Other News:

We've talked a lot on various threads about restaurants and food culture and Michelin stars. Well, now Texas is set to begin being reviewed for Michelin stars.  I'd expect Dallas and Houston to get a few each, Austin might get one or two.  Overall I doubt it's a good thing for the food scene but you can't stop progress.

he won't have to. many of the excessive J6 prosecutions have already been overturned rightfully so- as federal prosecutors completely bastardized the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 using a statute in it to charge those J6 peoples for something it was never intended, written, or meant to be used for.

My thought on this is we are at a point where tax rates will likely never go down from here - only up. I'd consider sucking it up and taking as much of a hit as you are willing to take, up to the highest feasible bracket too. I'm seriously thinking about it too.

There is nothing fundamentally wrong in the market right now - nothing that would cause a hard crash like 2008.

I get this from a very renowned financial advisor, so I'm not making this stuff up.

Lulzno.  I'm not a Republican and I'm definitely not a Trumper.

If it were Dems donning buffalo head masks and milling around in the capitol, I'd find them to appear just as stupid as the Trumpists did.

But you specifically said the capitol was "sacked" which is extreme hyperbole.  Find a mirror.  Open your eyes.

The BLM riots mostly peaceful protests were downplayed mightily. But that's OK, I guess?
