There aren't many large cities with "conservative governments".  Miami maybe.  San Diego?  Probably not.  I'm not sure what a conservative mayor would do especially, maybe hire more cops.
He didn't say they were conservative. He said they were more conservative. He's right.

Tampa is run by Dems, for examples, but not "progressives" like in NYC, Chicago, etc.

The mayor of Tampa was Tampa's chief of police. She doesn't shit on the police, that's for damn sure.

I'd say "relatively conservative", then, certainly some city governments are quite "liberal" in terms of law enforcement issues.  That is probably the main one I can think of.
Right, the scale is relative.  And the governing of a city isn't controlled entirely by municipal law, sometimes the state government has a heavy influence within the city.  For example, Texas-- where the state is actually taking over Houston Independent School District because the city has mismanaged it so horribly, for so long.

I give you Linda Hidalgo, Harris County Judge (kind of like the HMFIC for Harris County, which is where Houston is).  Flaming liberal, blamed a recent murder by illegal immigrants on trump, had to check herself into the nut house a few months ago.

City governments in Dallas and Houston are more conservative than their counterparts around the country.

And of course the state governments in Florida and Texas also heavily influence the local politics.

I didn't think I needed to explain this to the extreme of pedantry but here we are.

I don't even know what this has to do with the idea that people are fleeing cities, but I'm sure there is a point in there somewhere.

Are you sad that your attempts at strawmen like "I guess NYC must be a ghost town" aren't effective and you're being easily refuted with the fact that "NYC population is declining?"  'Cause you probably should be.

I'm sad that you created a strawman, are arguing solely against it, yet are not realizing it has absolutely nothing to do with my point.

I know San Francisco is often held up as a "liberal city out of control", but sizeable parts of the city are quite nice.  The Tenderloin area is atrociously out of control.

Major Cities Continue to Lose Population, While the South Gains (governing.com)

  • The South continues to pace the nation in population growth, with Atlanta, Dallas and Houston among the big gainers last year.
  • New figures from the Census Bureau reveal continued population losses in the Northeast and Midwest. New York City has lost more than 500,000 residents since the start of the migration.
  • Population losses have started to slow in most major metro areas, with gains last year in Boston, Minneapolis and San Francisco.

People aren't fleeing cities
And you cited NY as an example, that was directly and immediately refuted.

Right. They may be fleeing SOME cities, but they move to others. It's not some mass re-ruralization of America.

And it's not just here.

It's easy to see why. We don't as a society make the bulk of our economy from farming. Most jobs now involve regularly interacting with other people. Cities = other people.

San Francisco has had some pretty wild disparities in housing options and a huge housing shortage. Which, by the way, is probably pretty key on demographic moves. Hell of a hard time to build or buy house there. Both exacerbates homelessness and makes moving a pretty attractive option. NIMBY's are a pretty big force in that.
