Impact of California Fast Food Worker Wage Increase Still Too Early to Gauge | KQED

My guess is the impact is somewhere in between the disasters predicted by some and the nirvana predicted by others.

In 1642, Louis XIII gifted the Seigneurie des Baux to Hercule Grimaldi, Prince of Monaco, in recognition for his support for the French Crown. While this connection was officially severed at the time of the French Revolution when the rulers of Monaco were dispossessed of the territory, the title of Marquis of Baux is still traditionally given to the Crown Prince, currently Prince Jacques. A strong bond therefore continues to exist between these two rocky sites.

Some locations are closing.

Seems to me that would qualify as a disaster, as viewed through my own business eyes.

Sure, some won't make it, it's a disaster for them, but not overall.  Some would shut down anyway.

I know folks claimed a disaster would happen in Seattle, and it didn't, because of the higher MW.

I think $20 is pretty excessive obviously, but whatever, prices will go up across the board to an extent, hours will be cut, some won't make it, life will go on.

Right, and the guy making $20/hour STILL won't be able to afford a Big Mac.

The other factor here is the folks making $20 an hour before this being paramedics or whatever will also get a raise.  That then pushes up pay for folks making $30 an hour, and so forth.

Tax income, period. No deductions for corporations, and limited for individuals, based on a percentage of INCOME (not wealth). Accountants would not like this too much.
Disagree. What's the old saying, if you want to get less of something, tax it?

Tax spending and quit taxing income. Don't tax food or medicine, but most other things, yes. That way, you don't need the government looking over your shoulder trying to find all sources of income as it would not matter, so the IRS becomes a shell of itself, ie. more savings.

Exactly. And what does that do to inflation? Drives it through the roof. So how does that help anyone?

I have an idea, eliminate the min wage and allow the market to set the rate. If you don't like what you make at one place, move to a place paying better. Soon, companies will have to raise their wage to compete or go out of business due to lack of labor.

Interesting.

But we do tax spending already, at the local level.

Would you tax a house purchase?

What would be your recommended tax rate on spending?

While I agree in theory, we have the MW, and it's simply not going away.  My idea is to set it at the highest point it's ever been in history adjusted for inflation, and attach a COLA.

I don't know how much of the going costs of a McDs are labor versus materials and rent etc.  Maybe it's 25%?

The European VATs are around 20%, included in everything you would buy in a store.  The cost is hidden.  They also have income and other taxes as the VAT isn't nearly enough to fund their governments.

Tax house purchase, sure. Why not?

I don't have any idea what a tax rate would be, as that is somethine that would need to be figured out.

Also, I don't suggest any of this unless it is paired with a serious cutting of our Fed Gov't. It has become such a bloated paraiste on the back of the economy that it cannot continue at this pace. Someone up thread mentioned a couple of dept's that could be cut. I would say that is a good start. Another I would cut would be the dept of Education. When it was founded during the Carter admin, the US was number 1 in the world in Education, we are now somewhere in the mid 20's. I would say the dept of Ed is a collasall failure.

<<raises hand>>

I put a whole list of departments and agencies upthread. It's sickening to look at.

Education, created under one of the worst presidents ever, would be my first cut.

Homeland security, also created by one of the worst presidents ever. Let's talk about what that agency is. 250,000 people work within it.
