Factory farming is pretty horrific for animals if you think much about it, so I see the appeal of lab grown meat. Banning it feels like an attaboy to big producers. Not sure if lab grown meat will ever be viable, but they are certainly giving it an old fashioned try.

A lot of folks confuse lab grown and fake meat made from vegetables.  This law is stupid pandering.

the USDA should be in charge of food products

is lab grown meat/food dangerous to consume?

I know reading is hard, but you don't even have to click the article to see this. The headline of the article Badge linked states IN THE HEADLINE that Bill Gates' lab-grown meat has received USDA approval.

Is lab-grown meat a liberal thing?  Wow, folks can politicize anything.

I was thinking it would be more along the lines of, his campaign is being funded by Big Ranching or something.

I'm taking that it's politicized from this, from the article, that Sam quoted upthread:

Quote
“Today, Florida is fighting back against the global elite’s plan to force the world to eat meat grown in a petri dish or bugs to achieve their authoritarian goals,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Our administration will continue to focus on investing in our local farmers and ranchers, and we will save our beef.”

He's banning it because he thinks someday the "global elite" will ban meat. Or something.

I find it a difficult sort of slippery slope reasoning to believe that the mere existence of lab-grown meat available for sale/consumption in Florida will lead to force-feeding lab-grown meat and bugs to his constituents, but you do you, Ron...

Reminds me of carbon capture plants, the best of which is a tree.

The issue with that is that it only temporarily captures carbon. When the tree dies and decomposes, that carbon that it has sequestered will be released.

IMHO reforestation would be a helpful thing for the world, and it's "one of" the answers, but it wouldn't be enough to solve our carbon problems by itself.

Bury the trees.
It can be done, as long as it's done in a way that limits oxygen getting in there...

https://cen.acs.org/environment/greenhouse-gases/burying-wood-reduces-carbon-dioxide/101/web/2023/12

How much it will scale is yet to be determined. I think it's a good idea though.
