Russia-Ukraine aside, I don't think big, obvious county-vs-country war is a thing anymore, when it comes to the top handful of countries.
.
That's why I find it more likely 1 nuke is slipped in and set off, with mystery/debate/uncertainty over who done it is more likely than what a conventional strike would look like.  Another way that I find more likely is one country hacking another's weapons systems and getting them to nuke themselves.
.
Both scenarios, however unlikely, are absolutely less % chance of "mutually assured destruction."  Both have deniability built in.
I vaguely recall that any nuclear blast leaves a signature that can be traced back to its origins. Each source of plutonium has different combinations of isotopes and heavy elements that gives away its source.

If he had been thinking logically at any point during the last two years, he wouldn't have invaded Ukraine, and Russia wouldn't find themselves in the jam they're in.
I think "everyone" thought Russian forces would blow through to Kyiv and replace Z as President in short order.  That would have been pretty logical for Putin to think so, then it's fait accompli for the West, he has a friendly government in Ukraine, probably some resistance here and there in the western parts, and a done deal as it were.  Nobody much reacted over Crimea.  Had it been fast as expected, it would have worked.  He would have faced some sanctions no doubt, big deal.

Now we may have a static war with minor gains at great cost for each side.  Russia had plenty of time to create a layered defense suitable for conscripts to hold most of it.

Ukraine's counteroffensive is now underway. Here's what's happened so far | CNN

I think Putin's gambit now is to control what he has and create a new border with a hostile rump of Ukraine next door.

Btw I can’t move my data to any kind of personal cloud either. I’ll probably have to end up emailing it to myself to get any personal data off my pc, which as you know sending attachments via email is not secure.

Right, but you can claim it was lost or stolen when it's not fired from your silos or subs.

If anyone asked me in say 1980 the odds a nuke would be detonated in anger by 2023, I'd have said "near 100%".  I thought we were running out of oil also.

yes, gasoline rationing in the 70's - national speed limit of 55mph to save gasoline and lives

killer bees, the next ice age, Watergate, inflation, higher interest rates

the 60s were probably worse - race riots, Cuban missile crisis, assassination of Kennedy

The future doesn't scare me, maybe it should

If it did any good, I'd be scared.  The national debt thing worries me coupled with the incompetents we have in DC.  China worries me.

the national debt and threats of social security being wiped out because of it scared me into retirement savings in the early 80s

now not much talk about either

China scares me for the long run, but I don't have much farther to run.  30 years??

We've had incompetents in DC since the 60s

I think we had some "competents" in Congress back in the day, a few of them, enough to matter at times, folks like Sam Nunn who I liked quite a bit.  Some others were willing to compromise, Tip O'Neill and Reagan for example.

My theory is both parties have learned they do better by keeping us polarized, and the presence of social media and the national "news" media contribute a lot to that.  If "we" are convinced we must HATE DESPISE LOATHE the other Party, we donate/volunteer/vote for "our team", and we don't want ANY compromise that could help the other team.  It's like OSU-UM in a sense, you WANT the other team to lose every game.

I see folks on FB constantly deriding the other side (and ignoring the problems with their side), same on any other social media I might see.  I think "we" used to be 15% on each side die hard partisan, and now it's closer to 30% on each side.  They'd poke a stick in their own eye if they thought it would harm the other Side.

My son beat me for the first time yesterday. Granted, I was playing like absolute trash all day. He certainly didn't beat me at my best, or even at my "okay". But he won.
