I don't watch any network TV, not news, not shows, nothing. My wife watches some Hallmark stuff and local news, that's about it. I've noticed a LOT of political hit commercials lately, which is not a shock. Some PAC entity puts on an entirely negative commercial about a candidate. They say nothing about the one they appear to support.
My "rule" would be that no ad could mention the name of a political opponent. Maybe that's a free speech violation, but it would be nice. A negative ad would have to mention "my opponent wants to kill puppies", instead of the name.
My guess is that has zero chance of happening of course. I despise negative ads. That is one reason we end up with such poor choices so often, I think.
