What does this mean?
Endentured Servatude. People could enter, make passage to new world, and work it off.
The forced slavery is the more discussed version, and there is no way to make it appear like anything but.
When I said "cared for" I could have chosen better words. Their basic needs were provided. Like that of a horse, or other beast of burden. They were an investment and it was NOT every Tom, Dick, or Harry who owned a slave... it was the elite. The vast population never owned anyone else. The vast population raced here to the US as fast as they could, though, as they had opportunity here where it was impossible from where they came---- and it didn't matter where that origin was.
All this is a matter of optics. I'm offering mine.
The industry of the day, agriculture, required labor. The elite purchased slaves to do it. That was cheaper than paying peons. Those few drivers of industry- the same that made ot almost impossible for small operations to exist- is where the guilt resides... and, ypu can trace current flourishing industries back to the roots of those same people.
