The richest, most prodigious country the world has ever seen.....and the place is a dump.
yup. it really started in the 80s and then just accelerated at rapid pace under Clinton, Bush II, and Obama. And then the crap they pulled during corona with the CARES Act and forced shutdowns just made it accelerate even more, shockingly.

Buffett's Apple investment just went up by $9.8 billion (cnbc.com)
Buffett's Apple investment just went up by $9.8 billion (cnbc.com)

Sort of notable.  I know folks would like to tax this, but there is an obvious issue with that.
I would like to tax Apple into oblivion. And force them to bring jobs back to the United States if they want any tax breaks. Or possibly even you know, enforce anit-trust laws and break Apple and other monopolies up.

Apple's latest QTR they made $384 million a day in profit. Profit. A day.

McDonald’s ends 2021 strong, but rising costs ding profit - Chicago Sun-Times (suntimes.com)
who says a massive publicly traded company always needs more and more profit? this is the problem with the US economy. these major publicly traded corporations only care about what they show on their financial statements from QTR to QTR. They play the short game, not the long game. And it's made the United States worse off.

Well, I'd highlight that over 200,000 people aged 18-64 were permanently removed from the eligible workforce in the US since March 2020.
yeah, I feel like this is kind of misleading. Shouldn't be lumping 18 year olds with 64 year olds. This disease is one where your risks of death grow significantly with age, obesity, and other underlying health conditions.

There have been about 5,000 COVID deaths people aged 18-29. About 15,000 deaths ages 30-39. And 37,000 deaths ages 40-49.

For some stupid reason they lump 50-64 year olds together in the official statistics- but it's 162,000+ deaths. Would be interested to see say 50-59 year olds vs 60-64 year olds. They should've broken those ages out.

But ages 65-74 are around 198,000 deaths (65 is "retirement" age btw), ages 75-84 are 221,000+ deaths, and ages 85+ and up are 223,000+ deaths. 65 and up is around 642,000 deaths of the 880,000 or so - just around 73%.

they pay tax, some years. some years not. every billionaire and every multi-billion dollar national US based multi-national conglomerate finds ways to use tax shelters and loop holes to avoid paying tax. it's just what they do.

Not making light of the death and misery coming from this disease (or any other), but 200,000 is a drop in the bucket compared to the 10 million or so current unfilled job openings.
this.

I'd figure the "slave class" works because they need money.  I don't know why suddenly they wouldn't need money unless they get it from other sources, either illegally or from mom and dad et al.  I worked to get money to live, and retire, I mostly didn't enjoy it, I would not have worked had I not needed the income.
Wouldn't call them slave class. They are more like feudalist serf class. And they work because they absolutely need money, they haven't seen real wage increase in 40+ fucking years, they live pay-check to pay-check, and have been forced to load up on debt to maintain living standards of the previous generations. Living standards in the United States have been getting worse. Not better. The costs of living have been sky-rocketing while your average worker has seen no real increase in wages- which is why they have to load up on freaking debt just to live and they live pay-check to pay-check.

George Carlin was 100% right when he said...The American dream is dead. You know why they call it the American dream? Because you have to be asleep to believe it. America is a big country club, and YOU ain't in it. He nailed it when he said we don't have real choice in this country, there is an illusion of choice.

And my sister is currently a server at a restaurant making a living wage, and so are many of her friends.
depends on the restaurant. if a server works at a denny's - probably not making too much money. if a server works at Morton's or a Michelin star restaurant or some extremely over-priced super-popular high-end restaurant - those servers don't just make a living wage they can make stupid money.

no lie...if I was a really attractive woman I would just sit at home and do this. better looking the broad, more money she makes. some of these girls that are absolute smoke shows are making $30k a month or more just sitting their asses at home taking their clothes off and playing with themselves.
