Delivery services I have to believe have skyrocketed. Those are attractive jobs if compared to waiting tables, Kroger, etc. No boss, no shift, work when you feel like it. Tough to compete if the money is more or less equal and you own a car.

How do you scoff at the idea WHILE specifying one of the largest and worst offenders - food service.  They're not paid a living wage.  It's criminal.
The word "criminal" generally means activity that is illegal, against a law.  It's not criminal to offer wages of say $12 an hour.  I don't know what a living wage comprises, it's usually a political talking point.

If you think food severs are paid $12/hr by their restaurant, you're drunk.  Maybe it's changed a lot in the past 4-5 years, but they'd get $4-5 per hour because minimum wage didn't apply to them.

You know how I know you've never waited tables?

I have.

And my family owned a restaurant for ten years.

And my sister is currently a server at a restaurant making a living wage, and so are many of her friends.

All of that is precisely why I find this topic so puzzling.

My sister and several of her friends work for a local restaurant that shut down when COVID first hit, and the interior dining space stayed closed for several months.  They were all let go.  They had no income but collected unemployment.  When the restaurant reopened its dining room, most of them went back to work. A couple stayed on unemployment because they had extended unemployment benefits.  When those ended, the last remaining few went back to work.

But scores of thousands, never went back.  Some found other employment.  They most certainly all did not.  So how are they living?

I’ve always wondered what waiters, waitresses, and servers really make, including tips.

I always tip at least $5, and usually 15-25% of the bill. Usually in cash, but not always. I just assumed that if you had between 4-6 tables per hour, that was at least $20 per hour. My wife’s cousins were waitresses for years. Not a great living but they had a car, went on vacations, etc.

McDonald's salaries: How much does McDonald's pay? | Indeed.com

This is MCDONALDS, probably the LOWEST in the business.  Places that rely on tips of course pay less, but the server comes out way ahead or they'd leave and go to McDs.  i KNOW serves at nice restaurants have a nice income, for some it's a very nice income.  At any rate, they used to work at these jobs, and now many are not.  Why not?  Openings are going unfilled NOW that were filled preCOVID.

And of course whatever a living wage might be, a vague concept, is going to vary between SF, CA and say Jackson, Miss.  A lot.

Tell me the restaurant pays her that living wage.
Why are you stuck on what the restaurant pays?  The restaurant doesn't need to pay, that's what the tipping culture provides.

When discussing total income for an employee, and why some have abandoned that income, the amount the restaurant pays is irrelevant.  What the worker earns is the only factor that is relevant.

I have my own problems with the tipping culture, but it's here and it's not going anywhere.  If my sister didn't make enough money at her restaurant gig, she'd move on to something else.  But she doesn't need to, because she's satisfied with her current work arrangement, that pays her enough to live a lifestyle that she likes.

This is true of millions of servers.

But there's also a huge chunk of them that were making the same kind of money my sister was previously, and then after COVID, have opted out of the workforce.  How?  Where are they earning their income?

(I suppose Onlyfans is a possibility, but ALL of them?  Even the dudes??? :) )

I saw a sign at a grocery store in Breckenridge offering nearly $18 and benefits to stock the shelves.  That's an expensive area, but it's an indication of how much places are offering now for basic work requiring no or little training.  And as noted, the question remains, folks were taking these jobs preCOVID and now millions have not reentered the work force despite many many lucrative job openings.

It could be a variety of reasons, early retirements, deaths due to COVID, women not able to find child care, folks who found they could manage OK with only one income ...

I think anyone who wants a job can find one today even if they are unskilled.
