Texas is not part of the Deep South but it's obviously not a yankee state, either.

And sweet tea is not a Texan thing.  It's really only become common in the last 25 years or so.  Growing up in the 70s and 80s, only a handful of places had it.  In general, if you wanted your tea sweetened, you ordered your iced tea and then used the packets on the table-- pink or white-- and stirred that stuff into it.  That's why there is such thing as an "iced tea spoon."  It has a long handle to stir your sweetener into your tall glass.

It's popular in the Northern part of Florida (minus the beans).

In Florida, the further North you go the more South you get.

Bullshit. Sweet tea has ALWAYS been a thang round my part of Texas. My grannie from East Texas made that stuff so sweet you had to inject insulin just by looking at it.

That the most awesome thing I’ve ever heard on this board.

It sounds funny but it is culturally true.  South Florida is culturally dominated by northern transplants so it is culturally "Yankee" but Northern Florida is much more "Southern" in culture.

Bullshit back atcha.  East Texas isn't representative of Texas.  East Texas is way more Deep South than all of the rest of the State combined.

Sweet tea ain't a Texas thing.  It's a Deep South thing.  And Texas ain't the Deep South.

So you're kicking East Texas out of Texas?!?

The state legislature's gonna have something to say 'bout that.

Nah they can stay, just keep their nasty diabetes juice to themselves and don't infect the rest of the state.

I don't travel TX like I used to, but when I did--which coincided with my move to Austin in 2003--I found sweet tea was hard to come by once you got west of Houston.  You could probably draw a mostly vertical line from Houston on a map, up to Tyler, etc....maybe curving it a little bit to bring in College Station....and fence off the area where sweet tea was common.  When I worked in College Station, it wasn't hard to find there, but it wasn't reliably on the menu either.

I don't know how common sweet tea is in the rest of TX these days.  It used to be a rarity.

When I lived in Schertz Tx (just north of San Antonio) back in 1982, when you went to a resteaurant in Texas, instead of bringing you a water, they would bring out empty glasses and a picture of un-sweet, iced tea. It was not optional. This was the case in every establishment I went to from Texarkana to San Antonio.

Now, I cannot speak for how things are now as I have not been to Texas very often since then. But back then, it was un-sweet tea. And if you wanted sweet tea, they brought either a bowl of sugar or the sugar packets. I don't remember there being any artificial sweetner then.
