I appreciate the discussion here.  It's been really good.

It is true, tornado alley has been been shifting to the east, SE over the past forty years.

I get too many tornados here  - one is too many

I have a basement - poured concrete with a walkout to the back yard
1,100 feet on the main floor, 1,100 feet of basement
I've got a bedroom with large walkin closet, full bathroom, and furnace/storage room down there.
I could easily add another bedroom or 2.
Not that I’ve ever traveled much up North, but I honestly think I’ve never been in any kind of regular house with a basement.

My extent of travel has been: Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Colorado.  I always imagined anything N of Kansas would have basements.  Missouri is about the same latitude, not sure if basements are prevalent in either state.

Interestingly enough, at my old job we had a large control building that had a very large basement. Like 10,000 sq ft large. Rumor had it that when it was designed and built in the late 80’s/90’s they needed very large computers, known then as “cans” to operate the plant. The layout of the plant would be up on the cans like a light bright, with colors and indicators that light up for various reasons. The plant was divided up among a certain amount of computers to control certain areas. Sometime between the original design and the completion they went to what we called Op Stations ( mid 90’s). These were DEC computers, later Alpha stations. Everything became point and click, and we only needed one can per computer. They also realized that a basement was a bad idea for sensitive electronics, so everything got moved upstairs.

Anyways, for decades, we had this big, empty basement that just sat there gathering dust, with odds and ends stored there like old furniture and models of the plant. Finally around 2013 they finished it out and built offices and meeting rooms for some project that needed space.

No basements in the regions needing them most --- Tornado Alley.
Weird, that’s actually where I figured they would be prevalent.  I’m thinking mostly Midwest, like Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa.

They have cellars, not basements.

Cellars for wine, basements for beer?

Most houses around here (North Central Ohio) have basements. It is rare to find a house without one.

The problem I had when building the house I currently live in is that the clay in the ground was so hard that it was very difficult for the excavating contractor to get the basement dug out. He figured it would take a day, it took him 3 days due to the hardness of the clay. Needless to say, we have not had any issues with the house settling in the 30 years since we built.

BTW, I did a majority of the building myself. I contracted out the basement and cement work. I got some help with the framing and the drywall, but did most of it myself. I was a lot younger then.

The research drones learned that we're quick to scare and turn chimp at the sight of one of them, cursing and throwing a shoe at it.
Not really it's just that some freak from the Deep State shows up when we use the opportunity for skeet shooting.

The drone story harkens back to the War of the Worlds broadcast in the 30s.
