Good to know I make half of what a Car Wash Manager makes.  I'm going to go off myself now.
Well if you want to make the case that teachers are grossly underpaid- I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE!

Probably take grief for saying it. Teachers are paid what they are worth or there wouldn't be anyone teaching.  Your job is worth what people are willing to pay against what people will take to do the job.

Supply and demand works wonders in a free market.

lol
ok
Or it's a traditionally female career (ie- 2nd income for the household) so the pay reflects that (still).
If it was a traditionally male career, I'd be making $90-100K a year.  I can claim that and you can disagree, but whatever.
You can look up your state's % of under-qualified teachers and see that there are shortages all around the country and we're just told to suck it up and make due.  We had a kindergarten teacher quit and then took a student-teacher still earning her degree from another class and she's now in that full-time position.  Because no one is applying for the job.  Because teaching sucks.

All that being said, I wouldn't advise anyone to go into teaching.  It's probably one of the worst jobs you need a bachelor's degree to get (well at least you used to need one).

The normal idea of supply and demand for teachers doesn't work because there's always been plenty of people willing to teach because it's fucking important.  But today, eh, maybe not.  Maybe having a populace with a common median knowledge base isn't important.  Just go on youtube or onlyfans and make your money without actually working.

It's all broken.
Pay teachers, don't pay teachers.  It's all fucked.

most males making $90-100K a year get 2-5 weeks of vacation per year, depending on how many years they've worked for the same company

I think teachers should get paid more, but they do get more time off than most
and the benefit package is usually solid, especially the retirement plan

Yep, and many/most teachers do some sort of side gig for more money during that time off.

Idk, maybe paying teachers as little as possible, but enough so they don't all quit isn't a great plan.

My wife was a teacher her first three years we were married. The whole, they get 3 months off a year is mostly an inflated claim. First off, here they get out of school in very late May or the first part of June. They usually are required to work a few extra days once school is over, clean their rooms, administrative duties, and so forth.
Then, they are required to keep their certification up by attending various training activities and conferences. It’s not trivial. They usually require them to do a little traveling to get to these seminars and conferences, not far but it could be maybe 40 minute drive or maybe an hour or more, it depends on where it is etc. The district doesn’t reimburse anything for travel or fuel.  At least not ours.

They do usually get a solid two months off during the summer, but I don’t think they get any “ vacation “ at all once school starts. Only a few sick days. Almost any person in the corporate world gets at least a month off from work in a year. I get about 220 hours off, which works out to about a month and a half. Of course, new hires get less, usually about 100-140 hours off.

The other thing that drove her nuts was how much work you had to do outside of your regular hours. Unpaid, of course. I’m talking about covering events like athletic events, school functions.

Then you have the “homework”. Grading papers, preparing lesson plans, other necessary paperwork. Most only get one “ free” period.  But then they would deal with student issues, meet with parents, or just take a break.

But however you slice it, there was hours of work that needed done every week. And this is without dealing directly with the kids, who you had almost no options to really discipline.

One or two bad kids in a class would basically ruin the whole thing for everybody. But the schools won’t really do much, cuz most of these brats have more rights than you could shake a stick at. They’d send them to ISS, or whatever the call the problem area for kids. But they’d be back, sooner or later.  Same shit, different day.

Most of the worst-behaved kids would be fine if we didn't have to send them home every day.

This doesn't need to turn into a whole big thing about teaching, unless as Cincy insists, you have a solution we can implement to fix it all tomorrow.

There's an idea that paying $90-100K/year for teachers would attract people that would be better teachers.
Better at the content knowledge?
Better at conveying it in a way children would understand it?
Better at making social studies important to the kid 2 days after the DEA raids his house? (true story)

And the biggest flip is in parenting.  I was fine with whatever punishment I got at school, just dont call my parents, because that will make it worse.  Now the parents come in guns blazing, that its everyones fault except their little angels

Yes.
That's the point.

I would LOVE an exhaustive study on this.  It's happened, obviously.  But what caused it?  Where did it start?  A literal 180.

class of 1981 - 53 graduates - 3 or 4 dropped out

a handful of parents blamed everything on the teachers and school administrators - all 4 that dropped out

yes, way different now
