Fairly easy.  You cut benefits on folks not yet there, folks 50 and under.  They care less because it's off in the future.

You could also raise taxes "on the wealthy" of course, to the extent that raises much revenue.  That changes the nature of the program of course.

You also could invest the entire SSTF in Bitcoin and Tesla.

94... Do you perceive the term "optics" as inherently negative? I.e. it's hard to have "good optics"?

I agree with you that optics are all about perception. But in my view it goes both ways. Biden stopping new leases on fracking on federal land has great "optics" amongst his supporters. Whether its effects in reality are substantial or not, it makes him look like he's doing something good for the environment.

I feel like 320 wasn't attacking the "optics" of the move--he was legitimately blaming that policy on a significant rise in oil and gas prices. Hence it had nothing to do with him on how that policy made Biden look, it had to do with the real effects.
In my observation, people citing "optics" are nearly always criticizing.  Biden's base doesn't view his move as something that is "good for optics," rather they view it as the right thing to do that will get results-- even if it's nothing more than window dressing.

Same thing for Trump when he was in office-- his base didn't discuss his actions in terms of optics because they believed the actions were effective.

People citing "optics" are almost invariably trying to cast some action from the opposition as lacking substance and being "a bad look."

I just don't really see people saying, "Those optics were great!" because if they think something is great, they're not going to WANT to imply that there's little substance to it.  See what I mean?  Your experience may differ from mine, but this is what I see out there in the world.

Personally I think any discussion of "optics" are laughable because it's a tacit admission that there's no substance.

You guys probably haven't been clued into this, but my wife's social circle is arguing over the outrage about the Meghan Markle interview that aired Sunday...

My take on that is that we won a war that ending in 1787 that basically says we don't have to care about the British royal family. I don't understand the fascination, in the first case, but then I don't understand wasting energy on outrage over it either.
People care about a lot of stupid things.  I don't view the British royals any differently than I do the Kardashians.  People obsess over it for reasons I will never understand.

But, it doesn't affect me at all in my own life, so it's also easy to just shake my head and move along, on the rare occasions someone actually attempts to engage me over silly stuff like that.

I bring up college football when someone raise that sort of "news".

"I dunno, do you think that Bama QB is going to be as great as advertised?"

Yes, the royals are an utter mystery to me.  People are obsessed and they don't do anything.  It's mystifying.

Many care about what athlete says, rich folks, movie stars, it's no different I think.  If a corporate CEO says something of substance, I care about it, or might.

Politicians SAY a lot of things, I think often as not, what they say doesn't really mean that much.  It might, but often it doesn't.

Yeah I feel the same way about celebrities of any kind.  I like watching athletes perform in their sports.  I like watching actors in movies.  I like hearing bands and singers perform.  I like reading the literary works of various authors.

But I don't care at all what they say or do in their private lives.  It is irrelevant to my life.

My ex was intensely interested in various award shows, the Emmys etc.  She wanted to see each movie herself to have her opinion.  I wasn't interested and am not today of course.  I might be a bit interested in who won a Nobel, even if it isn't me.

The HOA meetings often devolve into something about the color paint to be used in the hallways, whether it's a neutral light beige, or a more neutral and lighter beige.

Maybe little in our lives really matters, but 'we' try to gin up something to make it seem to be a thing.  A person  truly apathetic about everything is probably clinically depressed.

I stopped watching the Academy Awards 2 years ago as they had become a political platform

Its a shame because they used to have a very entertaining show

I may have watched some part of them circa 1980 or so.  Maybe.  It's like wine ratings.  This wine got 90 points, and this one got 91, so I'll but it instead.

Wine is often about optics, not taste.

I stopped watching it in '81 when Chariots of Fire won - it wasn't close at the box office with some obscure flick called "Raiders of the Lost Ark" breaking the gate
