yeah I know they brought that case, now let's see them present the evidence at trial and convict him before we say he's guilty of anything.

They're trying to. Sometimes the legal process doesn't play out quickly, which is why we're nearly a year from the charges being filed and yet the case hasn't started. And now the lower court has to rule on whether the acts in question were "official acts" before the trial can even proceed.

It's unlikely there will be a trial before the election, so we won't get a chance to hear the evidence and have the case decided.

As usual, Trump will get a free pass.

and that's not exactly all they tried to do...tried blowing January 6 up into something it obviously wasn't and tried pinning that on Trump- which is ridiculous. they tried countless other obvious bullshit trumped up cases in civil, state, and federal courts that should've never been brought- which is ridiculous. And federal cases often take several years to go to trial....hardly see how anyone can blame that all on Trump.

I'm not versed enough in legal matters to know whether he's legally culpable for incitement, as I said upthread. However IMHO Trump absolutely has moral culpability for what happened on Jan 6.

Trump's lawyers can try to say and argue anything...and the SCOTUS' decision about Presidential immunity didn't state a President has complete immunity from all prosecution. That is not what the decision stated at all.

I'm aware of what the decision stated. And now his sentencing in the hush money case has been delayed, not because of any new evidence that might overturn his conviction, but because SCOTUS says that "official acts" are granted immunity, AND further that any evidence that is uncovered that is related to official acts is inadmissible.

So now the judge has to look at a conviction for acts (sex + hush money payment) that occurred prior to Trump's election, and couldn't be termed "official acts" in any possible sense of the word, might have to be overturned if any of the evidence presented at the trial was uncovered during/from "official acts" after he was inaugurated.

Which makes it increasingly likely that Trump will get a free pass.

Perhaps the Republican Party should take a hard look at themselves and why very few in cities are buying what they're selling.

But that would require critical thinking, which is something they seem utterly incapable of.

Explain to me what makes your statement correct and my restatement with Democratic/ rural areas substituted in for Republican/cities incorrect.

I think those sentenced to YEARS all committed violent acts against the LEOs present, causing injury and harm to their persons.
that QAnon Shaman guy got sentenced to almost 4 years in federal prison. he didn't commit violence against anyone.

Illinois/Chicago is an unusual and difficult example.

For one thing, Chicago is so big that it has some very urban inner-ring suburbs. I think the distinction we are trying to draw here is closer to "urban living" vs "suburban living" than a distinction based on the specific corporate boundaries of the City of Chicago and that is a lot more difficult, also subjective.

Compare Indiana/Indianapolis and Ohio/Columbus: In Indiana the State permitted/encouraged/mandated an effective merger of all of Marion County. In Ohio, Columbus effectively used their water and sewer systems to compel the surrounding areas to annex. Consequently, here is the area of Columbus, Indianapolis, Chicago, Cleveland, and Cincinnati:
  • 368 sqmi, Indianapolis
  • 227 sqmi, Chicago
  • 226 sqmi, Columbus
  • 82 sqmi, Cleveland
  • 80 sqmi, Cincinnati
Maybe it's a difficult example, sure. I pulled it out of thin air because it's the one that is most familiar to me given that I grew up there.

But I think there are other examples. Colorado was a heavily "Western" state that was reliably red up until Obama, and then went the other way, dominated by the Colorado metro. Georgia and Arizona were solidly red, even through Obama's elections, but in 2020 both flipped. I'd argue much of that is due to the growing influence of the Atlanta and Phoenix metro overwhelming the rest of the state. Looking at past elections, Oregon had been red quite a bit over the years but is now solidly blue, and I'd argue that's due to the Portland metro overwhelming the rest of the state.

All of those states, like Illinois, have significant land mass that's rural and a big city that dominates the state. As the cities/suburbs have grown to dominate in population, they've been going more and more blue.

it's because rural areas typically are populated by farmers/truck drivers/factory workers (especially in the south now with factories popping up all over the south). you know, working class people. And the Democratic Party completely abandoned the working class with Clinton and the New Democrats' rise to power. the Democrats were no longer the party of the working class and the unions but became the preferred party of big business and Wall Street and a bi-coastal elite in NYC/CA under Clinton and that has not changed a bit since.

My Arizona relatives blame people from California moving there and bringing their voting habits with them. They also think it's going to turn back this time around.

Californians also moved to Colorado and Nevada in droves, and now to Texas and Idaho.

So basically it's all California's fault?  I can go with that.

The video of police escorting folks around the Capitol is misleading, in my view, they were attempting to corral the protesters and escort them OUT.  In most cases, the doors they were holding open were EXIT doors, maybe in all cases.  The building had already been breached at that point, trying to detain or deter the rioters would have been a bad decision.  And many of the rioters who arrived after the initial breach did indeed just wander around.

The events seemingly have to be portrayed as ENTIRELY a massive violent insurrection OR just civilians strolling about taking selfies.  Neither is correct in my view.
I'm talking about more when they were trying to keep them from breaching the inside of the capitol...not when they were outside.  When people started breaking windows and the like....I think I'd have engaged with force at that point.  Like I'd have my arm ready and as soon as the window broke and somebody stuck their head in I'd have it aimed square between their eyes and let them know they either retreat out or head on to the afterlife.

Uh that doesn't mean Trump will get a free pass.....that means the judicial system is at work, working.

don't need to be a legal expert for that...and I'll help you out....he's NOT legally culpable for incitement. And that's a very straight forward open and shut issue. one can definitely argue that Trump has moral culpability for what happened on J6 for sure- by constantly spreading the message that the election was stolen from him. just as I would argue that Democrats, Biden, DNC affiliated lying corporate sensationalist media hacks also share some moral culpability for the assassination attempt on Trump's life last weekend by constantly gaslighting the public saying the election was "stolen" from Hilary Clinton and tin-foil hatting pushing evidence free conspiracy theories and RussiaGating them into oblivion saying he's a Putin controlled Manchurian Candidate puppet, that he's an evil racist, the reincarnation of Hitler and "an existential threat" for oh, only the past 9 years straight.

Trump will get a free pass over a complete and utter horseshit state case in New York that should've never been brought in the first place and is a complete and total farce? Seems like if anything he may catch a lucky break getting something that is complete, utter, obvious bullshit attempt at lawfare and weaponizing the justice system by a Manhattan prosecutor thrown out. May or may not happen. And I'd hardly call that a free pass. That case is a complete and utter f*cking joke and it's a true stain on the United States of America.

There's probably some truth to that. Although it's also just an easy scapegoat to blame them rather than accept that the "true" Arizonans are simply starting to change.

Given what we've seen from Biden, if he remains the nominee I don't expect AZ to go blue this year. Which is one of the limiters for Presidential politics--it's a small sample size and a lot of noise to try to pull out a real signal from.

Biden is imploding in nearly every swing state.

Idk how they get rid of him unless they invoke 25A because he ain't stepping down. He's already dug in and let the party leaders and big donors know that he's not going anywhere.

Gavin Newsom just signed a bill today which bans public schools in California from making rules requiring parental notification if a child identifies as transgender. Yikes. Not a great look Gavin. Especially if you have your eyes set on the Presidency.

And I wanted to address the discussion a few pages back about Texas turning blue.  Texas was heavily democratic up until the last 20-25 years.  Ann Richards was our last Democrat Governor, I think she left office in '94 (beat by GW Bush).  It seems like somewhere in there a switch flipped, Democrats turned republican, and vice versa.
