The History Of The Oldsmobile 455: GM's 'Other' Big Block Muscle Car Monster | DrivingLine
The History Of The Oldsmobile 455: GM's 'Other' Big Block Muscle Car Monster | DrivingLine

In 1971 the Oldsmobile 455 V8 would begin to fade from the high performance landscape. Compression would drop from 10.5:1 to 8.5:1 even in W30 package cars, and camshafts would slide back to the streetable side of the ledger. This knocked torque down to 460 lb-ft and horsepower to 350, both gross ratings. The 442 would carry in one form or another throughout the decade, but after 1973 its was a shadow of its former self, and by 1975 it couldn't even break the 200hp barrier (albeit judged by the less forgiving SAE net rating, which tested engine output fully-dressed with exhaust and accessories).

:043: I'd post an image if I had one but then you couldn't unsee it.My older brother was a ATC stationed in N.Michigan AFB in the late '70s picked up a piss yellow 66 4 dr Impala, and if you took a magnet to it - it wouldn't pull - a bondo beauty beast. But it had a 327 in it and he rebuilt the carb so it moved - and so did the gas guage.Had it for a year or so when my dad gave me a '67 white implala 327 4dr that I had for another yr. out of that. He was a 32 yr Employee at CHEVY. We sold the 1st one to a guy from H.S. who wanted the engine. And I had the 2nd one until my one uncle unfortunately had passed away and I got  his 2dr '72 NOVA with the 250 in it. So for zero dollars investment I had cars for my 1st 6yrs or so of driving. Then I got a '71 Dodge Dart with a slant 6 225 but that's a different story and don't feel like typing

The 70s and 80s were bad times for performance cars, at least after about 1973.  Fuel injection started to get a handle on emissions and performance, and then DOHC engines with electronics helped.  Then along came pressurizing with less lag.

the 300hp 350 in my 70 Nova got 20 mpg
4 speed, power steering and power brakes

if not for the 411 gears in the 12 bolt posi rear end it might have done better

3,000 rpm at 55 mph

That's a 1971, by the standards of today, not very fast.  Probably an automatic.  By 1973, the 350 4 bbl had only 185 hp, but that's SAE Net instead of Gross.
