I heard something about a bridge to Canada being closed in Detroit
The closure of the El Paso airport might be newsworthy to be discussed without it getting political.

This topic, however, can not be made so.

If you really want to talk about this, there's a whole politics section in the seedy underbelly of the site.

Well I think it's fair to bring it up as an example of a newsworthy current event.  Because I hadn't heard about it until reading it on this thread a few moments ago.

Discussing the reasons behind it, on the other hand, could potentially get political, and fast.

The new Gordie Howe bridge from Windsor to Detroit is schedule to be completed this year and it's $4.7 billion cost was completely funded by Canada.  Whatever happens there's another bridge in Detroit as well as a tunnel.  There's a big bridge in Port Huron too.  Typically there's pretty big lines at the bridges during the day with significant wait times to get through Customs.

I run across these occasionally on the reels.  I have no idea how accurate they might be, but they're pretty cool.

I was stationed in El Paso for two pretty short stints, and SFIrish was stationed there when we were dating, so I've spent a decent amount of time there. We also have service friends who retired there. I think it's an underrated town. Not fancy--at least it wasn't back then, or the last time we visited, which, admittedly was about 20 years ago--but some underrated restaurants, a decent draw for national touring acts, nice scenery if you are into high desert and arid mountains, and close to some other cool places, like Old Mesilla (where Billy the Kid met his eternal reward), Ruidoso, Carlsbad Caverns, the Guadalupe Mountains, and probably some others. I wouldn't want to live there because of the weather (very hot in the summer and not a lot of greenery), but it wouldn't be a terrible place to retire. Low cost of living.

[wrong thread, I know.]

I quite like El Paso too, though I've only visited and never stayed long enough to get a good sense of how I'd feel about living there.

The city itself has a quaint charm I like, I like the terrain.....the mountains are a bit unusual and kind of pretty to me.

The only thing about it is, it's not close to anywhere.  Like, if I lived there, I'd have to be mostly content to stay there, because traveling virtually anywhere else would be hours and hours.  In the US, anyway.  There's Las Cruces, but I don't really count that as a place I'd likely want to go, unless I just knew people there.

Less than 5 to Tucson
Less than 7 to Phoenix

Hey, you're right, I didn't realize ABQ was under 4 hours.

That said, anything over three hours makes me rethink my desire to drive there.

The Federal Aviation Administration has reopened the airspace around El Paso International Airport in Texas.

Major airport in the city. You can get to all of those further places faster...if the airport is open (!?!). American always had a lot of flights in and out, so you can get anywhere pretty easily.

I think Las Cruces's main charm--at least when I was in El Paso--is that national touring acts that skip El Paso often go to Las Cruces, so, for instance, I went there for a concert or two.

I checked at that airport when it came back online, to see where they fly, out of curiosity.

Southwest offers the most destinations, but I don't fly on that airline, or Frontier (or any budget airline really, with one exception).

American goes to ATX, PHX, LAX, DFW and ORD. Everything else is a connection.

Delta only flies to ATL.

Alaska only flies to SEA.

United only flies to DEN, ORD and Houston.

Options are very limited.
