yeah, the whole thing was pretty weird.

I don't think we'll ever get the full story regarding why he would leave a Big Ten powerhouse for a Pac 12 doormat.

The obvious scenario is that King Berry blew a gasket after the CCG debacle, so CGA took the first bus out of town.

Or he just really likes the West. I dunno.

Personally, I don't really buy the whole admissions spin.

Apparently going to forgo the dough, in order to walk away.  I guess that's why depart/fired is in order.

The last part was the biggest part of why he left. You don't have to buy it, but it's true, and I suggest you do buy it. He said so himself.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/wisconsins-admission-standards-pushed-gary-andersen-to-oregon-st/

He secretly interviewed (drove to Rockford, IL) for and took the Oregon State job before the 59-0 debacle. Some have said that had an affect on game prep. I'm not buying that. Regardless, the scenario you post is not at all obvious, or even remotely true.

His wife did not like living in Madison.

He wanted to recruit JuCo players and could not.

He was clearly not on the same page with his boss. He was a "say one thing and do another thing" guy. He fleeced King Barry. That's hard to do.

Yeah, I have no doubt that both parties reached a consensus on the PR spin.

Didn't know about the top secret interview.

I was pretty impressed that he actually stated his main reason for leaving. Most coaches wouldn't do that.

Needless to say, he'll never be the coach at Stanford..

First hearing of GAs super duper secret interview. It makes sense though. I myself once put in an equivalent 0-59 effort at a job once I'd interviewed well enough to land a different job. Any other details?

GAs reasoning for leaving Madison has always been believable; it's the exact reasoning Urban Meyer gave for not taking the Notre Dame job in 2004.

But if GAs wife didn't like Madison isn't it easy enough remind her that you're the state's highest paid employee?

It will be interesting to see where he winds up.

USU doesn't really need him at the moment, but another MWC team might take a flier on him.

He ran roughshod over that conference at a program that had been struggling mightily before he showed up.

The OrSU AD flew into Rockford because he didn't want his plane going to Madison. So Andersen had to drive there (I think in a snow storm no less) to interview. This was on the Tuesday or Wednesday (I can't recall which) before the championship game with Ohio State.

OrSU already knew Riley was leaving (officially announced on Friday that same week) for Nebraska and was reaching to fill its spot quickly.

Well, he's kinda getting a "reputation" and it's not good. So year, it will be interesting. I don't think it's the MWC though. I'm thinking more like FCS, somewhere in Utah/Montana/Wyoming/Colorado. Not sure what's out there to be honest.

Wow, OSU3 had the same AD that he worked for at USU. Weird.

http://www.sltrib.com/sports/2017/10/09/utah-native-gary-andersen-out-as-oregon-states-football-coach-and-hes-waiving-11-million-contract/

The coach-athletic director combination that once revived Utah State’s downtrodden football program stayed together for only six games at Oregon State.
Salt Lake City native Gary Andersen resigned as the Beavers’ coach Monday in a surprising development — topped only by the news that Andersen is forgoing the remaining $11 million on a contract scheduled to run through 2021 with no buyout provision, according to The Oregonian of Portland.

Well there's only one FCS Conference out west.

The Big Sky, or "Pig Sty" as it likes to be called.

He may have to settle for a coordinator position for the time being.

I'm usually not a fan of mid-season dismissals, but this probably was the right move at the right time.  The season's already lost, and it gives ORSU time to search for a quality hire.  Mike Bobo or Bryan Harsin might be worth looking into, since both CSU and BSU have some overlap in PAC territory, or maybe Chris Kliemann from NDSU (granted Corvallis might be even more remote than Fargo, if that's possible, but at least November is usually a fall month in Oregon)
