Flea-Flicker changed?
« on: February 20, 2020, 09:50:52 PM »
I'm researching the '74 NC Sooners and came across a video clip.  This is noteworthy, as the '74 Sooners won the NC despite being on probation and had zero TV appearances.
.
Anyway, the clip is OU vs Nebraska, where UNL takes the lead on what the announcers call a "flea flicker" multiple times.  Except it's no flea-flicker I've ever seen.
.
The QB takes the snap and pitches the ball out on a toss sweep.  The RB then throws back across the field to the QB and he runs it in for a TD.  Much like Crouch did vs OU in 2000, I believe.
.
Isn't a flea-flicker where the RB takes the ball, then laterals back to the QB, who then throws a pass downfield?
If the definition of a flea-flicker changed, when did it change?  Am I wrong here?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flea_flicker

wiki has a broader definition.

flea flicker is an unorthodox play, often called a "trick play", in American football which is designed to fool the defensive team into thinking that a play is a run instead of a pass.[1] It can be considered an extreme variant of the play action pass and an extension of the halfback option play.

Huh, in a flea flicker, the QB can be called for intentional grounding even if he is outside the tackle box and throws it past the LOS.

Huh.

Likewise I was like "huh?" so I had to click and read through...

Makes perfect sense when you realize that the goal is to avoid a player, who perhaps fumbled, or a WR on a reverse who knows he's stuffed for a deep loss, or something like that from just chucking the ball out of bounds to avoid the loss.

I wonder how many rules are in the book that are equally obscure and unknown to us.  Your explanation of the rationale sounds correct.

I recall teaching my son the balk rules way back only to learn the umpires at his level didn't know them.

It would be funny if some announcer started calling a play action pass a "flea flicker"....  and stupid as well, same with the halfback option.

I'm sure none of us would think of either that way, but they are by the broadest definition.

What about a play where the QB tosses to a WR coming around who then throws a lateral back to the QB, or throws downfield to a QB?  Made to look like a running play but isn't, not a FF to me at all.  I'll stick with the narrow definition.

On a separate topic, I asked a former ATL Falcon how many words would be used in a typical play called in a huddle and he said about 6 or 7, real quick, he gave me a few examples.  And he said it was work to learn a new playbook when you changed teams or OCs, but they practice so much it comes to them and they learn to listen for the key words that apply to them.  This was Brian Finneran who played at Villanova.

Ask Bill Belichick, he seems to know a the rule very well.   :)

OU won that game, of course (28-14), despite the "flea-flicker" (or not) play.  I think it was SI that called that Sooner squad "the best team you never saw" or something like that.  That was a significantly better team than the '75 NC Sooners.

Man, those OU-Nebraska games of the '70s and '80s were really something.

And the Nebraska play-by-play guy was a real hoot.  "Holy moly!"  "Untouched by human hands!"  "Man, woman and child!"

Sooner fans don't call OU Big Red anymore.  I don't know why.  I went off and spent 20 years in the Army, and when I came back, "Go, Big Red!" was no longer something Sooner fans shouted.

I know, sad

oh well

only one Big Red

and no, it's not the Badgers.  I've been to their stadium more than a few times.  They reference themselves more as Red, or Bucky
