Imagine a realistic scenario by 2030, and we're not far from there, where you want some smallish SUV, Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, etc.  The model you want costs $35,000 in 2025 dollars, about what a nicer one would cost.  Meanwhile, an EV that is basically the same in nearly every respect costs $33,000, I think it would merit a look.  It would have better acceleration, 300 listed range***, probably better handling, longer brake pad life, and you don't really need it for trips very often.

Our hybrid listed at $40 K, it is a "Lmited" model.  So, maybe the EV model "Limited" costs about the same, maybe a bit less.  I'd give it a hard look if has prices were $5.

Not really adding anything new, but speaking with the experience of a recent experience shopping for a car and seriously considering electrics, the battery life is a real hangup for people like me who want a car that will last a long time. I think the used market for electrics is a big risk.

The used EV market reflects that perceived risk, which is why it could be appealing to some.

And as I've said, one of the problems with the market for new EVs is the depreciation for used EVs. People are worried about buying new EVs because the resale isn't great.

It's possible a good portion of that is due to concerns about battery life. But another aspect is that brand new EVs are coming down in price quickly and that compresses the used market because a new EV is cheaper than an equivalent new EV was 3 years ago... So the 3 year used EV has to drop its price even more to be a more compelling purchase than new.

Which may be a factor in my next car purchase. If it's something I'm going to drive 10+ years--hopefully something I drive until the wheels pretty much fall off--I'd buy "gently used" and then I'm not all that worried about my own resale value. So if the EV resale market is still trash, that means I can jump into the used market especially cheaply...
