The NCAA has no teeth.  School Presidents will not provide the teeth.  Cooperation = punishment.   Cheaters win.

I do believe cheating is worse now than ever.  The amount of money involved in college sports compared to the 70's or 80's makes me believe this has to be true.

I would think it would be much tougher now, in the age of social media and cell phone cameras.
I'd also speculate that it was a lot easier to keep the players out of trouble, so long as the PD and DA are fans.
I know we still see corruption like the situation in Tallehassee with Shameless Jameis, but that was still National News whereas in the 70s they'd've swept that bad boy under the rug faster than Roscoe P Coltrane can wreck a cruiser.

NCAA and University Presidents have teeth, they chose not to use them.
The NCAA put some teeth into Penn St. not long ago.  If the NCAA would cripple a program like Ole Miss the university pres and the other SEC programs would be forced to do something.
maybe a post-season ban of 8 years along with scholarship limit of 40 instead of 85 for the 8 seasons - put them in the tank for a decade - hurt the SEC in the process.
or just slap some wrists and keep raking in the $$$
