A Pox on All Your Houses (SOC 10/24/20)
« on: October 24, 2020, 07:58:10 AM »
It's been a long, hard, cruel, boring, exciting year, but we finally have some B1G college football to watch.  We have one game in the books, and Wisconsin suddenly looks like a real contender if their QB can go 20/21 every week.  Illinois, not so much, so I guess it wasn't the most surprising result in the world.

It's a cold morning in Columbus.  After yesterday was warm and almost 80, we had rain and storms all night, and a wake up to 45 degrees.  While I would have liked some grilling weather for an OSU game, and I can also roll with soup weather.  I think I'm going to go with chicken n dumplings today.  Let some stock simmer for much of the day should make the house smell warm and nice.  Through a few logs in the fireplace, turn on some football, and fall has finally, officially, completely arrived.

The schedule

Noon
Nebraska at OSU, FOX
Rutgers at MSU, BTN
3:30
Iowa at Purdue, BTN
Penn State at Indiana, FS1
7:30
Michigan at Minnesota, ABC
Maryland at NW, BTN

Other games of note
Cincinnati at SMU, 8 pm, ESPN
ND at Pitt, 3:30, ABC
Auburn at Ole Miss, noon, SECN
Iowa St. at Okie St., 3:30, FOX

My thoughts on each game:

OSU v. Nebraska: Obviously intrigued on how OSU looks.  When I did the position previews I was shocked at how thin Nebraska looked at several positions.  This is a mismatch on paper but COVID can be an equalizer.

Rutgers v. MSU: The intrigue game.  I won't be watching because OSU will be on, but MSU seems like a complete mystery.  Rutgers has a new offense and a new Schiano - could they possibly pick off Sparty?  I'm just curious as to what these teams look like more than the actual result of the game.

Iowa v. Purdue: Iowa seems like the rock, so don't think they will be too surprising.  Purdue was interesting, but now the coach is out with COVID, Rondale Moore is out for unspecified reasons, and it feels like the wheels are coming off for Purdue before they even run out the gates.

PSU v. Indiana: Very intrigued by this game.  I've been bullish on the Hoosiers, but in the back of my mind it seems silly to ever claim the Hoosiers are going to be good.  PSU shgould be improved with a real OC, but Micah PArsons and Journey Brown are gone.  Upset?

Maryland v. NW: Meh

Michigan v. Minny: Another really fun game.  Michigan's defense is strong, but has some pronounced holes and we will see how they fill them.  Minny has a strong QB, a big line, and a first round receiver.  The weather will be cold and this could be a really fun time.  We also get to see the Joe Milton experience against a rebuilding Minny defense.  All fun.  Really happy to have OSU at noon and two bangers at 3:30 and 7:30.  Makes for a fun day.

I've said it before, Indiana seems to be perpetually on the verge of a breakthrough but they never quite get there.

Heh I've grilled in some cold temperatures.  But sitting outside drinking a Great Lakes and watching the game is also part of grilling, and I sure as hell ain't doing that when it's 45 degrees.

Not sure what's cooking yet. Still have some more stone crab, a good lunch.

Probably going to make some chicken.

Our kitchen is not done. Countertops come next week. That's been the holdup - the China thing hit the manufacturer in Cali. I can't wait until it's done. Been using an infrared camp burner and a propane camp oven. It's getting old - 5 weeks now.

I've kinda viewed Indiana and Maryland this way. They get a couple elite players and 1st string can compete against anyone, but then 1 or 2 injuries and the lack of depth rears its ugly head.

It's 33 in Kenosha right now. Probably too cold to start any fires. Heh.
