Death of college football and all that--it is remarkable that ND is still relevant right now. In the old days--two years ago?--they would be playing for pride. Now they still have a shot at glory. So many classic mid-season football games would no longer matter that much in the current playoff structure. Too bad.

Yup, folks make way too much of close losses early in the year, every year.
That and a big part of it is that we just don't know how good the other teams are either so it is all just a guess, the poll right now:
  • Ohio State is #1 almost entirely on the basis of a 7 point home win over Texas but Texas has looked pretty shaky so maybe they shouldn't be #1 but then, who should?
  • Penn State is #2 based solely on preseason expectations because beating Nevada, FIU, and Villanova proves nothing.
  • LSU is #3 almost entirely on the basis of a 7 point road win over preseason #4 Clemson but that looks a LOT less impressive with Clemson struggling with Troy, losing to GaTech and now being an unranked 1-2 team.  LSU does have a home win over UF but are the Gators any good?
  • Miami is #4 almost entirely on the basis of a 3 point home win over preseason #6 Notre Dame but are the Irish any good?
  • Georgia's wins over Marshall and Austin Peay prove nothing so the only thing supporting their top-5 ranking is a close road win over Tennessee but are the Volunteers any good?
  • Oregon has had very impressive scores but their three victims are winless against FBS competition so it is hard to tell if Oregon is actually that good of if the competition has just made them look that good.
  • Florida State is a top-10 team because the team that they beat in their opener had "Alabama" on their jerseys and we've all seen LOTS of REALLY good Alabama teams not too long ago but none of us actually know if THIS Alabama team is any good.
  • Texas is the highest ranked team with a loss and that makes sense because the team that they lost to is defending NC and sitting at #1 but if Ohio State isn't actually all that good then Texas shouldn't be this high either and we don't know yet.
  • Illinois is #9 mostly based on preseason expectations because beating Directional Illinois and Directional Michigan proves nothing.  The Illini did beat Dook which is technically a P4 win but Dook is still Dook, it isn't BB season yet, and the Blue Devils also lost Tulane.
  • aTm is in the same boat as Miami.  It is possible that Notre Dame is REALLY good and Miami and aTm are slightly better and deserving of their top-5 and top-10 rankings but it is also possible that Notre Dame sucks in which case Miami and aTm are overrated.

You could go all the way through the poll like this.  Nobody has much to back up their rankings yet.

crazy to think he came out of Detroit in the 2023 class and then Bryce in 2025 class. CJ Carr came along in 2024 class- but he's a good step below both of them as HS players and college recruit/prospects. that's a hell of a 3 year run for QB prospects coming out of the state of Michigan.
