Might even have that April Fools joke in the Whimsical thread.Of a guy dressed like a blind pilot with with dark glasses on using the white cane stick to sense obstacles in the way as he walking down an actual Air Port concourse
IMHO as funny as it is, it makes sense.

If you're a pilot, you don't need braille to know it's where you're supposed to be. If you're blind, you DO need braille to know it's where you're NOT supposed to be.

I thought it funny that the nicest referee dressing room I've been in had Braille stamps below "Officials" on the room card.

Russia on Tuesday announced the start of tactical nuclear weapons drills close to Ukraine, in what it said was a response to Western “threats”.

Throughout its two-year offensive on Ukraine, Moscow has repeatedly talked-up its arsenal of nuclear weapons and its readiness to deploy them if it senses an existential threat.

The West has accused President Vladimir Putin of irresponsible nuclear sabre-rattling.

Russia’s defence ministry said Tuesday the drills were taking place in its Southern Military District, which borders and includes parts of Ukraine that Moscow claims to have annexed. It did not specify exactly where.

The drills are designed to test “the readiness of personnel and equipment of non-strategic nuclear weapons combat units to respond and to unconditionally ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Russian state,” the defence ministry said in a statement.

It added they were a “response to provocative statements and threats by certain Western officials.”

Putin ordered the drills earlier this month after a series of Western statements on the Ukraine conflict drew scorn in Moscow.

Russian officials pointed to comments by French President Emmanuel Macron about NATO countries needing to not rule out deploying troops to Ukraine and British Foreign Minister David Cameron saying Kyiv had the right to fire Western missiles at Russian territory.

Russia’s Southern Military District is the command centre for its offensive on Ukraine. It is headquartered in Rostov-on-Don, 60 kilometres (40 miles) from the border with Ukraine and also includes parts of the country Russia says it has annexed—the Crimea, Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk and Zaporizhzhia regions.

The defence ministry published footage showing trucks carrying missiles to a field where launch systems were prepared and troops at an airfield readying a bomber to carry a nuclear warhead.

SAN FRANCISCO - The median home price hit an all-time high in California, with the Bay Area showing the biggest price jump across the state, according to new figures.

The California Association of Realtors (C.A.R) said last month, the statewide median price for existing, single-family homes exceeded $900k for the first time in history, setting a new record-high. That’s an increase of 11.4 percent from $811,510 in April 2023.

In the Bay Area, the median exceeded $1.4 million last month, up 15.5% from a year ago. The association said the Bay Area saw the largest price jump on a year-over-year basis than any of the other six regions it tracked in California.

The number of homes sold was also up, a solid 23.1% spike in the Bay Area in April from a year ago. Statewide, sales saw a 4.4% increase.

Industry experts said the figures showed that competition was on the rise again in California, after sales slowed from soaring interest rates.

"April’s rebound in both home sales and price shows the resilience of California’s housing market and is a signal that buyers and sellers are beginning to adjust to the higher interest rate environment," C.A.R. President Melanie Barker said in the group’s home sales price report released on Friday.

The C.A.R. report also noted that in the last few months, sales of homes priced at or above the $1 million dollar mark in California continued to hold up better than the more affordable properties.

"Sales in the $1 million-and-higher market segment surged 39.8 year-over-year in April, while the sub-$500,000 segment declined again moderately (-8.0 percent)," the report found, with researchers adding, "The growth in sales of higher-priced homes continued to provide upward support to the statewide median price and was partly responsible for the solid increase in year-over-year growth rate."

Real estate experts cautioned that while the latest figures suggested that the spring homebuying season was starting strong, there were ongoing economic factors that could hinder growth.

"While the market performed solidly in April, we don’t expect to see a rapid recovery as long as inflation remains sticky and mortgage rates continue to fluctuate despite recent dips," said C.A.R. Senior Vice President and Chief Economist Jordan Levine. He also noted, though, the housing inventory in California was starting to increase, which would help bring gains in home sales.

In the Bay Area, Napa County saw the largest year-over-year increase, up 16.6%. Alameda County followed with a 14.4% surge. Marin County was the only Bay Area county to see a drop in prices, with the median falling 5% in April from the previous year.

In other news, we are off shortly to our first meeting with the "symphony advisory council", something my wife wanted to do.  We missed the earlier meetings.  I have low expectations, but will stay as quiet as possible throughout.
This thing lasted two hours of speakers yammering about how great everything was and what a success this "council" had been.  Of course, there was no real opportunity to provide any "advice" on anything, nor were we asked (I had none to give).  It struck me as just a back patting exercise.  There were maybe 60 people present.

As we walked home, my wife gave it a pretty glowing review saying how she enjoyed this or that, I said not a word.  Later she got onto to me about not saying anything.  I responded that I kept quiet because anything I had to say would be negative, and I didn't want to get in some argument about it, so I stayed quiet.  She went off in a huff.  She'll get over it.

A thing I resolved not to do in retirement is sit through long banal meetings, fool me once OK fine, ...

Yes, I'm a curmudgeon.  Oh, we apparently we were supposed to stay after for cocktails etc.  I think that is why most of the sixty folks showed up in the first place.  Some of them were ancient, the rest were merely old.

I think they sort of charge for the drinks, I am never sure, they never show up on my credit card, but they take your name.  The attendees are "Big Donors", and I think it's a tax dodge.  Anyway, at that point, I would have paid money to leave.

My wife likes social events, she's used to them, she had to put them together in her job, hobnobbing etc.  Now she goes to the HOA meetings without me.
