Thanksgiving game

  • Ole Miss 37, Mississippi State 27

Mike Leach's first run through the SEC came to a merciful end to wrap up a winless conference season, by getting blasted in the Egg Bowl in a game that wasn't nearly as close as the final score, thanks to a couple of junk time TDs after falling behind 37-13.

Conference races going into the final weekend

ACC

  • Clemson vs. North Carolina

BIG XII

  • Iowa State has already clinched one spot, the other spot is messier...
  • Oklahoma, Texas, TCU, and Texas Tech are all 5-3:

  • TCU is 3-0 against the group, Texas is 0-3, Oklahoma and Texas Tech are both 1-1, but play this week.  So any tie where TCU remains involved, they go
  • Texas is eliminated because either Oklahoma or Texas Tech will win
  • If TCU loses, then it's the winner of Oklahoma-Texas Tech

BIG TEN
EAST

  • The biggest Ohio State fans last week?  Michigan.  OSU's win over Illinois oddly means Michigan still controls their own destiny.  Now, the winner of the Game heads to Indy, Indiana is out.  Of OSU wins, they win the division outright.  If Michigan wins, it's either a 2 way tie with OSU (which they win via H2H), or a 3 way tie with OSU and Indiana.  Indiana is eliminated based on division record (4-2 vs. 5-1), and then its back to UM over OSU H2H.  If OSU had lost last week, UM would need a win AND an Indiana loss to Purdue.

WEST

  • If Wisconsin loses, the Minnesota-Nebraska winner heads to Indy
  • If Wisconsin wins, they go

PAC 12

  • USC has clinched the South

NORTH

  • If Cal beats UCLA, they go
  • If Cal loses, and Oregon beats Oregon State, then Oregon goes
  • If Cal and Oregon both lose, then Stanford goes

SEC

  • Alabama vs. Florida

AMERICAN

  • Central Florida is 6-1; Temple, Memphis and SMU are 5-2; and Cincinnati is 4-3
  • If Central Florida wins they get one spot, beyond that, it's confusing

CONFERENCE USA
EAST

  • The entire division, except for FIU, is either 5-2 and 4-3, so there are too many possibilities

WEST

  • If Southern Miss beats UAB, they go
  • If UAB beats Southern Miss, and Louisiana Tech loses, UAB goes
  • If UAB and Louisiana Tech both win, Louisiana Tech goes

MAC

  • Northern Illinois has clinched the West

EAST

  • If Ohio wins OR Buffalo loses, Ohio goes
  • If Ohio loses AND Buffalo wins, Buffalo goes

MOUNTAIN WEST
MOUNTAIN

  • If Boise State wins OR Air Force loses, Boise State goes
  • If Boise State loses AND Air Force wins, Air Force goes

PACIFIC

  • If Nevada wins, they go
  • If Nevada loses, and San Diego wins, San Diego State goes
  • If Nevada and San Diego State both lose, and San Jose State wins, San Jose State goes
  • If all three lose, Nevada goes

SUN BELT

  • UL Lafayette vs. the winner of Appalachian State/Troy

Friday noon games

  • #8 North Carolina 33, NC State 16
  • #6 Iowa State 27, West Virginia 17
  • Western Michigan d. Buffalo
  • Eastern Michigan d. Miami(Ohio)
  • Bowling Green d. Northern Illinois

The Tar Heels were in total control, they just gave up way too many sacks that ended drives in 4th and long.  UNC ended up with over 500 yards of total offense, compared to just 198 for NC State.  The Wolfpack tallied 8 sacks, but that was just about the only positive for them.

The Cyclones' undefeated season ended last week, and while their Big XII title game birth was already clinched, and hope of a CFP bid looked to be fading thanks to a terrible start from Brock Purdy, who started 5-11 for 46 yards and a pair of interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, as West Virginia sprinted out to a 10-0 lead.  Iowa State showed their moxy, responding with three consecutive touchdown drives, and before you knew it Purdy had 275 yards and 2 scores, and Iowa State was up 27-10.  West Virginia threatened, scoring again, and getting the ball back down to the Iowa State 22.  Down 10, the Mountaineers elected to go for it on 4th and 2 from the 24, rather than kick a 41 yard field goal.  Their shovel pass was stopped for no gain, and Iowa State's national title hopes survived.

Friday 2:30 games

  • Missouri 29, #7 Arkansas 28
  • #12 NEBRASKA 44, #9 MINNESOTA 33

The Razorbacks miracle run to a New Years Six bowl took a major hit this afternoon when the Tigers scored two touchdowns in the final minute, thanks to an onside kick recovery, and overturned a 28-16 deficit.  In fairness it was only a +2 TO differential, and a 14-3 point of turnovers margin that had Arkansas in the position they were in.  Now they have to wait and see if the committee gives them a slot.  Granted, if you had told Arkansas fans preseason they'd have to "settle" for a Citrus or Outback Bowl bid, they certainly would have signed up for that.

Minnesota fans may point to Tanner Morgan injuring himself in the 1st quarter on a non-contact injury, but you really can't put any blame on the Gopher offense, that still scored 4 touchdowns, and 33 points.  They also didn't do a half bad job against the Husker passing game, holding Martinez to just 109 yards through the air.  Problem was Nebraska gained over 7 ypc on the ground, with 164 from Martinez, along with 111 from Dedrick Mills.  Now it's time for Husker fans to cozy up tomorrow, and...gulp...root for Iowa.

Friday 3:30 games

  • South Florida 55, #23 Central Florida 24
  • Ohio d. Akron

UCF went right down the field on 7 plays, forced a 3 and out, and got the ball back into the red zone.  The Knights tried to punch it in on 4th and goal from the 2, rather than take the FG.  They failed, USF put together a 98 yard, 16 play scoring drive, and that kicked off a 55-10 run for the Bulls to absolutely lay it on the AAC's first place team.  UCF may yet reach the conference title game, but their chance to handle their own business failed.  It also seems like nobody wants the Group of Five bid.

Friday 4:00 games

  • Washington State 35, Washington 30
  • #16 Texas 45, Oklahoma State 20

Mike Leach was perhaps watching from Starkville as his former squad finally broke through in the Apple Cup.  The Huskies led 10-0 after 1, but Washington State scored 4 consecutive touchdowns to take control of the game and the rivalry, their first regulation win over Washington since 2007.

Texas can't get into the Big XII Championship, but their 9-3 finish may put them in play for a New Years Six bowl.  FOr their part Oklahoma State's second half collapse was complete.  The Pokes did finish 6-6, so they'll go play in a bottom tier bowl, but for a team that was once 6-1, that's about as hollow as it gets.

Noon games

  • Virginia d. Virginia Tech
  • #5 OHIO STATE 41, #13 MICHIGAN 17
  • South Carolina 34, #3 Clemson 24
  • PENN STATE d. RUTGERS
  • NORTHWESTERN d. ILLINOIS
  • SMU d. East Carolina
  • Marshall d. Old Dominion
  • #2 Georgia 31, Georgia Tech 9

Once again Michigan could secure a trip to the CCG with a win over their rivals, and once again, it wasn't competitive.  Michigan pinned the Buckeyes deep after stalling out around midfield on their first drive, but Justin Fields led a 93 yard touchdown drive, and three straight touchdown drives to start the game.  Shaun Wade scooped up a fumble and ran it down inside the redzone, leading to a fourth Buckeye touchdown, and a 31-0 halftime lead.  The final 30 minutes was more of a coronation than a football game.

Well, we've got some chaos.  The Gamecocks used a 72 yard touchdown on a broken coverage, and a fumble recovery inside the Clemson red zone as part of a 20-0 lead.  Then the offense stalled, and let Clemson get back to within 20-17, but a Trevor Lawrence injury and a pair of turnovers in their own end of the field ended Clemson's national title hopes.  The Tigers have to regroup for a red hot North Carolina, if they want to win their 6th consecutive ACC title.

Jamie Newman had probably his worst game of the year, with just 126 passing yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions, but the defense absolutely shut the Yellow Jackets down.  Georgia Tech only reached the red zone once...and it ended in a field goal, one of three for Georgia Tech, who needed a win to secure bowl eligibility for the first time under Geoff Collins.  Now they need to hope there is room and willingness to add a 5-7 team somewhere.  Considering 11 of 14 ACC teams went 6-6 or better, it seems unlikely.
