Title: 2020 Simulated College Football Season
Post by: ELA on August 24, 2020, 04:03:24 PM
I said half-jokingly back in May that I'd have to sim the season if we got to that point.  In May that seemed laughable.  Yet, here we are.  At best we'll get an extremely diluted season of partial schedules, partial participation, and partial attendance.  But quite possibly, we get nothing.

So no matter where we go from here, I'll sim out the season as it was intended to be played.  I'll sim the games I can (ideally 15 or so per week), and use a mix of FPI/SP+ to sim the remaining games.  I'll use a weighted probability to just sim the game one time, so that upsets still can happen.

I was expecting the opt out teams to be omitted from the AP Poll.  They weren't, but I don't know if voters factored that into their vote or not, so I'll use the coaches poll, released when we still thought everyone was at least going to try to play...

Season kicks off Saturday afternoon with Notre Dame playing Navy in Dublin

I'm wanting to do the same with Whoa Nellie.  I think a 2020 season set, if done properly, would be a big seller.

Most of it could be done with a preseason mag, honestly.  Although determining who would get the 4th-most carries, 6th-most receptions, etc would be tough.

And yards per _____ numbers.....when, say, a backup RB from last year is now the starter, his yards per carry may decrease with the larger load...but they could increase as well.

I'd need time to do it, and I'm very short on that now.  Thanks to covid, I spend more time on teachery work than I did with in-person learning.

Fun.

I think it shows the SEC as the strongest, followed by the B1G then a BIG dropoff, then the ACC, B12, and PAC, then another BIG dropoff, then the AAC:
What I've done here is ranked the six conferences that have ranked teams by their highest ranked team's ranking compared to the other five then their second highest ranked team's ranking compared to the other five, etc.

It'd basically be a preseason set - predictive.....and with no actual season to correct them, they'd simply become the 2020 season set.

I have to get some big orders out so I can toil with it.  I hadn't had an order in a few days and was looking forward to getting caught up.  But someone ordered all of the 2019 Big Ten teams today.  :)

And looking at the AP poll, the SEC is obviously #1 - 6 teams in the top 13.  I think we'll all squirm and want to club a baby seal in week 2 when a bunch of schools drop out of the rankings.  This is all such a mess.

Also, I'll update the poll weekly, but I am looking for input.  Hopefully lots of it.

The only thing is that we won't have MOV for games I don't sim on the video game,.so that sort of screws with things.

How do you figure that?
If kickoff is in Dublin at 3:30 p.m., it's going to be (IIRC) 9:30 a.m. in Iowa when that happens.
Maybe I'm mis-figuring something, like how long it takes you to play 18 holes.

I think it balances out, because you hit more shots, but you less often have to play bad ones

Come on, Navy!
ND was up midway through the 1st, 10-0.  Navy battled back, and looked to take a 14-10 lead into the half.  But Irish hit a big 3rd down passing play, to let them hit a FG going into the half down 14-13, then 2nd hald was all Irish.  Ian Book had 366 passing yards

Anyway.

I turn through it, looking at the conference pages, and found something interesting.

I assume there's some small level of money in it that makes the drop down less worth it. Or there's no attractive spot to land in FCS.

Fun fact, they've never lost a bowl game in four trips.

Noon kicks:

Penn State jumped out to a 17-0 1st quarter lead, then just kind of coasted.  They were still up 27-13 with 4 minutes to play, when Kent State scored, got the onside kick and scored again, to stun the home crowd.  Kent State threw a pick in OT, and the Nittany Lions survived with a field goal.

Michigan State-Northwestern was the defensive slug fest you would imagine.  It was 10-10 at the half, and 13-13 after 3.  MSU took advantage of a shanked punt to put together a 32 yard drive and go up 20-13.  After a 3 and out that went backwards, Northwestern elected to punt on 4th and 12 from their own 23, rather than go for it, with just about 4 minutes left.  MSU faced 4th and 2 at the Wildcat 38 with 1:45 to play.  New coach Mel Tucker elected to go for it, and Connor Heyward made that decision pay off, by breaking a 19 yard run, and Matt Coughlin kicked a 31 yard FG to ice it 23-13.

Liberty barely even slowed Virginia Tech down, as the Hokies scored on 7 of their first 8 drives, to lead 45-7 early in the 4th, when the reserves came in.

FSU is absolutely slaughtering WVU.

UM needs to stick to the ground.  Running and screaning Washington to death, but McCaffrey doing nothing passing the ball.  Just keep feeding the backs. Averaging nearly 8 ypc between Charbonnet and Haskins.

3:30 kicks:

West Virginia picked off a James Blackman pass on the Noles first drive, and turned it into a Doege touchdown pass.  Then forced a three and out and took over in FSU territory.  Things looked bad, and then flipped HARD.  FSU got a pick six on that drive to tie it, then had two solid drives that stalled in the red zone, and ended in field goals.  At 13-7, and facing another red zone 4th down, Norvell went for it, scored a touchdown, the first of five straight TD drives to open up a 48-7 lead, where the Mountaineers had negative total yardage

Michigan fans were not big McCaffrey fans after two drives.  Granted the playcalling was heavy pass, but he started 1-4 for 6 yards, with a sack, and a pair of 3 and outs.  He then completed his next 15 passes, and got the Wolverines out to a 34-10 halftime lead.  Coasted the red of the way.

Eastern Washington is not the team they were a couple years ago, but is still a dangerous FCS opponent.  The Gators shut that down quickly with a 21-0 lead after the first quarter, with Kyle Trask doing the dirty with his legs, and passing enough to keep them honest.

In the real world, South Alabama beat Southern Miss 32-21 Thursday (?).  Accidents happen.

Alabama was mostly in cruise control, and it was never in doubt.  They missed a short field goal early, and it looked like it was going to be scoreless after 1, but they hit a 30 yard bubble screen on the final play of the quarter, to go up 7-0, and led 20-6 at the half.  USC was never within 2 touchdowns in the 2nd half.

The Lobos took advantage of 5 first half Mississippi State turnovers to grab a 35-10 lead, but that wasn't enough.  The Bulldgos outgained them by nearly 300 yards, and outscored them 34-7 in the second half to avoid the home upset.

Bowling Green held Ohio State scoreless through two possessions, so...yay?

Nebraska led 23-13 at the half, and held on, after Purdue closed it to 23-20 late in the third.  The Boilermakers had two drvies in the 4th quarter that started on the Husker side of the 50, but failed both times to get into FG range.

Both ways.  That's why I sim each one one time.  I'm not interested in who wins most often in 10,000 simulations.  I'll put the weighted odds in once, and see if one time the upset happens.

Hey, the Big XII leader, Kansas, just lost to an FCS team!

#4 Georgia 31, Virginia 21

The Hoos led 21-9 at halftime, despite being outgained by nearly 100 yards, thanks to a pick six, and Georgia reaching the red zone four times, and settling for four field goals, one of which they missed.  Water found its level though, and the Dogs outscored Virginia 22-0 in the second half.  JT Daniels struggled mightily in his bulldogs debut, with just 118 passing yards, on less than 50% completions, but Georgia ran for 364 yards.

Iowa had to overcome a horrible offensive start, with a broken coverage touchdown being their only trip to the end zone, down 27-10 going into the 4th.  They scored again early in the quarter, but were stopped on a 4th down attempt with about 5 minutes left.  They got the ball back, and after they were stopped on 3rd and 5 at the 17, Ferentz elected to kick the field goal to make it 27-20 with 52 seconds left, but the Cyclones recovered the onside kick, and sealed it.

Kansas was able to stick with Baylor for nearly three quarters, scoring late in the 3rd to make it 24-21.  The Bears responded with 3 consecutive touchdowns to take a commanding 45-21 lead.  The Baylor receivers had a lot of drops, or it could have been worse.

Rutgers converted a shanked punt and 4th down conversion into an early 7-0 lead, and that was about it.  Tommy DiVito destroyed Rutgers, more with his legs than his arm, although he did throw for 250 yards as well, to go with 130 rushing yards.

Arkansas went 3 and out, and the Irish marched right down the field.  They elected to go for it on 4th and goal from the 2, were stopped, and the Hogs turned it.  They took a 20-0 lead at halftime, with Ian Book struggling.  The Irish tried a comeback in the second half, with a pair of scores, and had 1st and goal with under 3 minutes to go, down 8.  But Book threw his third interception of the game, and Arkansas pulled the upset.

Penn State jumped out to a 7-0, and was tied 7-7 at the half.  But the Hokies dominiated the second half, scoring five straight touchdowns, to sprint out to a 35-7 lead.  The Nittany Lions escaped at home in OT over Kent State last week, but they have major issues to resolve.

Oregon looked in control, depsite getting not much from their offense, up 26-16 after 3.  The Buckeyes flipped it and dominated the 4th quarter, with Justin Fields throwing for over 200 yards in the 4th, after having 129 after 3.

Bo Nix put himself in the Heisman discussion with a 400 yard passing day, sending Mack Brown to 0-2

The ongoing Sooner defensive issues seemed to be back, with the Vols leading 37-28 going into the 4th, but they clamped down in the final frame, even scoring themselves on a pick six to seal it.

Neither Texas nor LSU ever led by more than one score in a game dominated by the defenses in the first half, with LSU leading 10-7 at the break, before the offenses clicked in in the second half.  Texas hit a 48 yard field goal on the final play to force overtime at 31-31.  After scoring on the very first play of overtime, Texas was able to shut down the Tiger offense, and forced an incomplete pass on 4th and 8 to win.

I said last week that if the Kentucky offense that showed up against Eastern Michigan, was their real offense, it was going to be a long year.  That looked to be the case as Florida raced out to a 34-3 halftime lead, never threatened by a Kentucky passing game that wasn't able to get anything going

Vandy struck first on a pick six, but that was it, in a defensive struggle

Maryland jumped out quickly, 17-0, but WVU tightened it to 17-16 at half.  Maryland's opening drive of the second half went right down the field, before failing on 4th and goal from the 2.  However, on the very first play, the Mountaineers were called for holding in the end zone, and the Terps never trailed.

Temple dominated Rutgers from the jump.  The Owls led 14-0 after their first two drives, and Rutgers never got it within single digits.

TCU transfer Shawn Robinson struggled early, not trusting his arm, and failing to deliver with his legs.  That flipped in the locker room, as he threw for over 200 yards in the second half, with a pair of touchdowns, outscoring the Gamecocks 20-0 in the final 30 minutes.

The good vibes of a big 2-0 start that included a conference win over Northwestern, and a road win at BYU, are now all gone in East Lansing, after following up a home upset loss to Toledo with a drubbing from the Canes.  Sparty was never in the game, and trailed 37-9 before scoring a garbage time touchdown to get into double digits.

Michigan seemed to seize control of a defensive struggle, outscoring the Badgers 17-0 in the 3rd quarter, to open up a 27-7 lead.  But Bucky wasn't dead, scoring on a pair of Jack Coan passing touchdowns to pull within 27-21.  Michigan was able to convert three 3rd down conversions to run over 7 minutes off the clock, and end with a sealing field goal.  Joe Milton was what we expected.  Just 51% completion rate, but threw for 240 yards, and had a 21 yard rushing touchdown.

Penn State is now in full on panic mode, after a narrow escape against Kent State, a loss to Virginia Tech, and a home loss to Northwestern.  Sean Clifford threw the ball 61 times for nearly 400 yards, but also threw 3 picks, including two in the end zone.  The Nittany Lions had one last play from the 9 to attempt to put the game into OT, but Clifford's 61st pass fell incomplete, and wasn't even in the end zone.

Ian Book had a case of the Sean Cliffords.  Over 400 yards passing, but 3 interceptions.  Wake returned one for a touchdown, and one inside the 10, which they punched in two plays later.  That was the difference.

Rocky Top stormed right down the field and scored on their first drive.  A sign of things to come?  Not so much.  The Gators continued to dominate this rivalry, and stamped their claim as SEC East favorites.

Arkansas ran out to a 38-14 halftime lead, but Texas A&M came all the way back, and took the lead 45-44.  But the Razorbacks had a little fight left in them, and punched in the winning score with 22 seconds left, to continue their campaign as the most pleasant surprise of 2020.

A lot of work for the Buckeye defense, after trailing 21-20 into the third.  Ohio State sleptwalked through most of this one, and won easily, but showed that the defense has holes, and they need to find that energy early.  They have fallen behind both Oregon and Rutgers in the second half, and were nearly tied with Bowling Green going into halftime.  They won all three, but how many teams will allow OSU to give them that early lead?

Penn State's disaster continued, spotting Michigan a 21-0 lead in Ann Arbor, and never getting back within single digits.  Journey Brown got off to a great start, but as the deficit grew, the run game was emphasized less and less.

The Sooners survived a scare at home, but a 2nd quarter safety when Ronnie Perkins brought down Charlie Brewer in the end zone equaled the margin of victory.  Baylor kicker John Mayers hit a 51 yarder last year to send Baylor's game against TCU to overtime, but Dave Aranda did not call on him to try a 58 yarder on the final play of the game.  Instead, the Bears' Hail Mary attempt fell hamlessly to the turf.

Auburn's defense completely smothered Kentucky in the first half, taking a 24-0 lead into the half.  Kentucky "capitalized" on a shanked punt, and a long run to score a pair of field goals early in the 3rd quarter, but momentum really flipped with a pick six that allowed the home crowd back into the game at 24-13.  Auburn marched down the field again, but was held to a field goal, before Kentucky put together their best drive of the game, and punched it in to close to within 27-20.  Bo Nix put the Tigers on his back, with a 7 play, 71 yard touchdown drive, to open up a two score lead again.  In what was a controversial decision, with 7:48 left, Mark Stoops elected to punt on 4th and 3 from his own 48.  Auburn didn't score, but did convert three first downs to ice it.

The Wildcat defense came out strong, holding Texas to just a field goal on their first four possessions, and leading 7-3 early in the 2nd.  Sam Ehlinger took over, and led the Longhorns on 4 consecutive 2nd quarter touchdown drives, accounting for 3 of the 4 himself, 2 with his legs, 1 passing.  That was all the Texas defense needed

Miami looked like they were going to run away and hide, taking a 21-0 lead.  Pitt came back and tied it up, before the Canes retook a 24-21 lead.  Narduzzi trusted his defense, and punted the ball back, rather than attempt a 4th and 5.  D'Eriq King made him pay and drove Miami down for a 31-21 win.

The biggest upset of the season went down in Oxford, thanks to a 17-0 3rd quarter for the Rebels, to take a 10 point lead into the 4th.  The Tide scored to cut it to 3, but a Mac Jones interception ended any comeback hopes.

The Sooners used a 21-0 run in the third quarter to blow a 24-19 game at halftime, into a 45-19 rout.  Spencer Rattler got off to a rough start, 4-11 for 36 yards with a pick, but once he settled in, he picked the Texas defense apart, and wound up passing for 350 yards.

The Spartan defense gave Joe Milton problems all day long, holding him to 37% completions, and outgained the Wolverines by nearly 100 yards.  But Milton did connect on a 71 yard touchdown pass, and Rocky Lombardi threw a red zone pick six.  Michigan State's red zone problems were the story of the game.  The Spartans reached the redzone six times before Michigan even got there once, but that resulted in three field goals, a failed fourth down conversion, and two interceptions, including the pick six by Ambry Thomas.  To be dominating play, and still trail 14-9 did not bode well for Sparty, once Michigan played better over the final quarter and a half, scoring the final 13 points.

With a bye week next week, and then a road game at Rutgers, the Huskers looked primed to roll into a Halloween date with the Buckeyes in Columbus at 7-0, and a top 15 ranking.  A quick 10-0 lead seemed to support that, but it was short lived, as the defense began to falter, and the Illini took a narrow 21-20 lead into the half.  An early 4th quarter touchdown pass from Brandon Peters to extend Illinois' lead from 28-27 to 35-27 proved to be the final score.  Scott Frost elected to go for it on 4th and 2 from the 18 with just under 7 minutes to go, needing a touchdown and a two point conversion to tie, and Adrian Martinez was stuffed.  Nebraska never got back inside the Illinois 40.  The questions for Scott Frost will be why Dedrick Mills, who ran for 81 yards on 12 carries, only got 12 carries.  Martinez was accurate, completing over 70% of his passes, but on just 5.6 ypa, never even threatened to stretch the field.

Baylor and Texas Tech were tied 10-10 after each had two possessions, but it was just 20-10 Baylor at the half, and 30-20 going into the 4th.  Both quarterbacks threw for over 400 yards, but the Raiders converted a 4th and 6 with just over 6 minutes left, and turned it into a touchdown.  Charlie Brewer made his biggest mistakes of the night on their next possession, taking a sack to set up a 3rd and 24, and then panicking and throwing into double coverage for a pick six, giving Texas Tech two touchdown in under a minute.  The Bears converted a 3rd and 4th down, but on 4th and 12 from the Texas Tech 34, Brewer threw a game ending interception with 1:12 left.

Brock Purdy threw three 1st quarter touchdowns, and the party was on in Ames, up 21-0, but the Oklahoma defense buckled down, and the Sooners had the ball twice in the final 5 minutes with chances to tie or win, but a game tying 46 yard field goal with just over 2 minutes sailed wide, and getting the ball back on their own 20 with 26 seconds to go, Oklahoma was unable to get into field goal range, and a game ending 58 yard hail mary fell harmlessly to the ground at the 8.  The field rush was on.

Indiana's miracle season rolls on, with a road win over Rutgers.  The Scarlet Knights made things dicey midway through the 3rd with a touchdown pass and two point conversion to close to within 21-18, but the Hoosiers scored the final 17 points to stay unbeaten.

The Gators' defense was not much help, but Kyle Trask threw for over 400 yards himself, and the Rebels became one dimensional, relying too much on the run, and in the end they simply didn't have enough.

The story in Minneapolis was the Michigan defense.  The Wolverines were able to get pressure on Tanner Morgan all night long, without having to blitz much at all.  Aiden Hutchinson and Kwity Paye recorded 2 sacks a piece, and Michigan had 7 as a team, 6 from the line.  Morgan did pick up 72 yards on the ground, but just 109 passing yards, 39 of which came on a meaningless late touchdown in the final minute, which was Rashod Bateman's first catch of the game.

A defensive struggle in the first half on the Plains opened up a bit in the second half.  The Tigers took a 16-7 lead into the break, which included a safety, and a fumble recovery inside the red zone to set up one of their touchdowns.  The Aggies offense found their groove in the second half, although they didn't take their first lead until a Kellen Mond touchdown pass to Jhamon Ausbon with 3:14 left.  It was the Isaiah Spiller show mostly though.  After getting hurt on his second carry in the game, he came back in the 2nd half and ran for 124 second half yards on just 9 carries.

Purdue has now lost to Rutgers and Illinois?

What, were your sims initiated after the news that Rondale was opting out and not updated for his return?

Because while I'm not expecting Purdue to be world beaters this season, I think the OL is finally ready to climb back to "satisfactory" and with the weapons they have they should be putting up some serious points.

BC was controlling play, but leading just 22-17 midway through the 4th, due to settling for six FGs (making five).  An underthrow was picked off by the Eagles with 6:18 to play, and returned to the Hokie 34.  Seven plays and with just over 3 minutes left, BC punched it in to seal the upset.

Clemson's offense was very underwhelming but the defense more than made up for it, forcing three first half turnovers, scoring on one, and the other two leading to touchdowns.

The Sooners got back on track with a wire to wire win over their rivals.  Kennedy Brooks ran for 162 yards, his season high.

Purdue went into Ann Arbor and stunned the Wolverines thanks to special teams and big plays.  Rondale Moore had a punt return touchdown, among three Boilermakers touchdowns of over 50 yards, and 3-3 on field goals.  The Wolverines were less fortunate, as Purdue's bend but don't break defense worked, with Michigan missing all 4 field goal attempts and a PAT.  Seeing their team trailing 30-7 going into the 4th, Michigan Stadium had substantially emptied out, save for a small Purdue contingent in the southeast corner.  They had to hold on, as the Wolverines came to life with four 4th quarter touchdowns.  It was too little, too late, although Aiden Hutchinson recorded his third multi-sack game of the season in the loss.

One thing video games never quite perfected was the ranking system.  There is no universe in which a 7-0 Iowa State team is ranked ahead of 7-1 Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, and Oklahoma in 2020.

Yes, undefeated teams do start to really hop up the rankings if they're non-helmets, late in the year (as long as they're P5 programs).
But they still have a ceiling between 8-12 until the last week or two of the season, and even then, their shot at top-5 is rough at best.
Of course, if everyone loses (a la 2007), all bets are off.

They have multiple major wins at this point, including over #1 (at the time) Oklahoma

Still though.

I'd guess it's on purpose, but video games love highly-ranking G5 programs in dynasty mode.  What's not on purpose are the leaps made in the 2nd half of the season by undefeated teams.  Just my opinion.

This is true, but ISU is still a P5 school, albeit not one with a ton of history.

But Lafayette and Colorado State are the undefeated mid-majors, and both are still quite a ways down

Texas Tech had to win to stay within one game of Iowa State for the conference lead, and a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns fueled their come from behind win in a game where both defenses played better than expected.

#1 goes down at home, after Justin Fields leaves the game in the 2nd quarter with an injury, and the Buckeyes up 17-10.  Nebraska flipped the script on J.T. Stroud, outscoring Ohio State 30-10 over the final 38 minutes.  Nebraska had a pair of pick sixes, and Adrian Martinez got whatever he wanted, running and passing for over 200 yards.

Neither team ever led by more than 5, and Malik Cunningham had over 450 total yards, but the Cardinals were -3 in turnovers, and Brian Johnson kicked 4 field goals for the Hokies, including the game winner with 1:12 left.

Northwestern marched right down the field on their first possession to take a 7-0 lead, and then the Boilermaker defense rose to the occasion and dominated the rest of the game.  Zander Horvath had his second straight 120+ yard day, as Purdue is turning around a season that two weeks ago appeared to be on the brink

The Spartans tried to win a defensive struggle, but two Gopher scores in the final minute of the first half, thanks to a Rocky Lombardi interception, and a touchdown drive to open the second half, turned a 14-9 MSU lead into a 30-14 Gopher edge in about 5 minutes of game time.

Florida's offense had nothing, Georgia looking to take a 17-0 lead into the break.  A hail mary pass to end the first half changed things a bit, but a pick six of Jamie Newman, really made it a game, with Florida tying it up at 17-17.  But that just woke the Dogs up, and they tallied back to back scores to put it away.

TCU won an old fashioned Big XII shootout, where neither defense had anything all day long.  Both teams went over 650 yards of offense.  The Sooners erased a 10 point halftime deficit, to take a 40-34 4th quarter lead, but the TCU offense had their response.

With a healthy Justin Fields back in the saddle, the Buckeyes' offense got back on track after their shocking upset loss to Nebraska last week.  However, for the second straight weekend the Ohio State defense surrendered over 400 total yards to an opposing quarterback.  They played the bend, but don't break to perfection late, and Indiana had 2nd and goal at the 1 on each of their final two possessions, and got no points.  After a false start, the Hoosiers elected to go for it on 4th and goal fro mthe 4, and Shaun Wade knocked the ball away the first time, and then with 38 seconds to go, on 3rd and goal from the 2 following a Penix one yard loss, the Buckeyes dropped Tuf Borland into coverage, and he ended the game with an interception.

Don Brown loaded up the box, and dared Josh Jackson to throw it over them, and he didn't although not for a lack of trying, with a career high 48 pass attempts.  Quinn Nordin's kicking woes continued, missing 2 of 3 attempts, plus an extra point.  But it didn't matter, as the Terps had no answers for the Wolverines' offense

The Rebels, already with an upset of Alabama in their pockets, were looking to add another top ten victory, and after 3 quarters it looked like a laugher.  The Rebs were up 32-10, and the only reason it wasn't worse, was because they had settled for six field goals.  Kellen Mond threw for 186 yards in the fourth quarter though, and the Aggie defense finally showed up, scoring three consecutive touchdowns.  But a failed two point conversion on the final score proved to be the difference

The Terps defense started strong, and finished strong, holding the Buckeyes to a scoreless tie after 1, and prevented Ohio State's backups from scoring in the 4th.  Problem was they lost the 2nd and 3rd quarters 48-3.

How bad does Florida want that Georgia game back?  Nobody is playing better right now.  Both teams advanced inside their opponents' 30 on each of their first 3 drives of the game.  Problem was the Gators scored 3 touchdowns, while the Tigers had a field goal, a failed 4th down conversion, and a punt on 4th and 26 following a penalty and a sack, so Mizzou had a 21-3 deficit to show for it.  Florida didn't stop scoring, scoring touchdowns on their first 5 possessions, and 6 of their first 8, with a pair of field goals in between, for a 48-3 lead, and still led 48-10 when they punted for the first time.

Speaking of getting starts back, Bucky could use one, since winning 8 in a row after an 0-2 start knocked them out of the polls.  The defense picked Jack Plummer off 3 times, and held the potent Purdue receiving duo of Bell and Moore to just 72 combined yards.  The Wisconsin offense did not have their best day, but Jack Coan did have a pair of long touchdown passes.

Granted it's just Vanderbilt, but Jimbo got a bounceback effort after doing nothing for three quarters against Ole Miss last week, putting the Aggies in a 22 point hole going into the 4th.

Florida State has gone from CFP contender to needing help just to reach the ACC Championship in just two weeks, thanks to a completely inept offense, which had two red zone turnovers to go with a sub 300 yard game.  To be honest, it's sort of surprising they had the ball with a chance to win.  When Phil Jurkovic completed a touchdown pass early in the 4th, to go up 20-7, it appeared to be game over, but the Noles responded immediately with a 75 yard touchdown drive, their best of the game.  But two subsequent possessions totalled just one first down.

If Georgia makes it to Atlanta, it will be thanks to their ability to finish against their East rivals.  Just like their Cocktail Party win, the Dogs took control of a close game with a 14-0 4th quarter.

It sure looked like the Huskers' miracle run was going to come to an end early on.  Iowa scored a safety on the first play, after a disaster of a kick return that involved a muff and a fumble with the ball going out through Nebraska's own end zone.  The Hawkeyes then took advantage of good field possession to drive right down the field for a 9-0 lead before the Nebraska offense even took the field.  Their next possession, Iowa took it down the field again thanks to a pair of long runs from Sargeant, but after getting 1st and goal from the 8, the Husker defense at least held to a field goal.  But the #6 team in the nation still faced a 12-0 deficit early in the 2nd.  Then Adrian Martinez turned it on, and the Husker offense scored the next 38 straight points to stun the Iowa City crowd.

Ole Miss has proven to be problematic to the West contenders, with wins over both Alabama and Texas A&M, but the Arkansas defense seemed to solve them, as they remain in position down the stretch for a shocking trip to Atlanta.

Tom Herman's decision to kick a field goal down 31-27 on 4th and 10 with just under 5 minutes to play will certainly be the talk of Austin talk radio this week, considering by the time the Longhorns got the ball back, it was at their own 20 with just 17 seconds left to play, making the fact that "all they needed was a field goal" completely irrelevant.

UL Lafayette's commanding lead in the race for the Group of Five auto bid took a serious hit with the end of their unbeaten season.  It does seem unlikely that a 1 loss Sun Belt team could hold off a 2 loss AAC or MWC team.  But either way, the top of the Group of Five looks as weak as ever in the CFP era.  The Cajuns trailed the entire game, and took their first lead, 23-20 midway through the 4th, but immediately surrendered the losing touchdown right back to the Jaguars.

Defense optional, except, when, down 8 early in the 4th, Syracuse elected to go for the potentially tying touchdown over the field goal, on 4th and goal from the 5.  Rex Culpepper botched the RPO, the ball was on the turf, and the Noles took over.  The very next play, James Blackman threw an ill-advised pass on the sideline into double coverage, which was tipped twice, and grabbed off the bounce for a 90 yard touchdown.  The Orange were never within one score again.  Although the Syracuse offense looked much better after Tommy DeVito's injury, with Culpepper running the offense.

Northwestern's defense did better than the score would suggest.  The Gophers scored on a 96 yard pick six, and then, after Northwestern had taken a 42-35 lead with 4:52 left, housed the subsequent kick.  The WIldcats had a slow drive, and inside the red zone, ran the rest of the time off the clock, and had the ball centered at the 14 yard line for a game ending 31 yard FG...that hit the right upright.  The teams exchanged field goals in the first overtime, and then on 2nd and goal from the 4, the Gophers sacked Peyton Ramsey, knocked the ball loose, and recovered it.  They kicked their own game winner in the bottom of the 2nd.

Michigan's defense bounced back from a terrible first half, but then failed them again in crunch time.  The Hoosiers took a 20-7 halftime lead, and extended it to 27-10 midway through the third.  The Wolverines scored a pair of touchdowns on offense, and the defense had a scoop and score around two three and outs.  The go ahead score with 1:22 left was deflected off the outstretched arms of Mike Santrisil, then off a diving Indiana defender, into the hands of A.J. Henning, who raced 40 yards without anyone realizing he had made the catch.  That was just enough time for Michael Penix, who finished the day 32-52 for 381 yards, but in the end he won it with his legs.  Indiana had 3rd down from the 8 with 8 seconds left, when Penix short hopped Ty Fryfogle, who may not have gotten in anyway.  The Michigan players started to celebrate, only to look up and see 1 second left.  On the final play, seeing nobody open, Michael Penix took off, hit the defender at the goal line, and plowed in for the winning touchdown.

Speaking of bad defense, neither side put up much of a fight for about 35 game minutes in Norman, at which point the Sooners trailed Kansas 38-31, and the game had seen one punt.  Oklahoma stepped up after that to avoid an absolutely shocking upset, but it certainly can't make their fans feel like anything is better when Pooka Williams runs for 186 yards on you.

USC spotted their rivals a 13 point halftime lead, 20-7, but the Trojans packed the box and shut down Chip Kelly's offense.  Dorian Thompson-Robinson didn't go over 100 yards passing until his 23rd completion.  He finished 26-30, but for just 118 yards.  The Bruins kicked a field goal with just over 2 minutes left to break a 23-23 tie, but USC's offense marched right down the field, before Slovis hit Tyler Vaughns on an 18 yard scoring strike with 43 seconds to play.  The booth buzzed down for a review, but it was clear, not one, but two feet in.  UCLA, now forced to go vertical with their passing game, never threatened.

The Crimson Tide wasted no time in putting separation between themselves and the Aggies, picking off Kellen Mond twice in the first quarter, leading 24-0 after 1.  It could have been worse, but Alabama opted for a 19 yard field goal, and missed another after going backwards following an interception return down to the Texas A&M 18.  Mond finished the day just 21-44, and while the Aggie bend, but don't break defense, was effective (thanks to a 2-6 day for Bama kicker Will Reichard), settling for field goals on back to back possessions to end the first half doomed them.

Ohio State has had national title plans seemingly derailed by Illinois in the not so recent past, and the Illini put the fear of god into the Buckeyes again in a driving rain storm.  The Illinois offense didn't muster much, but the defense did their part, and Illinois was +3 in turnover differential, with a 17-0 edge in points off turnovers.  The Buckeyes forced Illinois into a 3 and out to open, and immediately marched right down to first and goal.  But a bubble screen was read perfectly by safety Sydney Brown who broke on it, picked the ball off, and returned it 94 yards for a touchdown.  On Ohio State's very next play from scrimmage, Fields fumbled the ball, Illinois recovered, and punched it in 5 plays later, for a quick 14-0 lead.  Problem was Illinois never found the end zone again, and even in a rain filled slop fest, 23 points wasn't enough.

Wisconsin finally solved the Adrian Martinez problem.  The Badgers went right down the field on their first drive, but elected to go for it on 4th and 5, rather than kick the 41 yard field goal, which failed.  Nebraska's offense then did what they've done on every Big Ten opponent this year, march down the field, with little opposition.  They scored on 4 of their next 5 drives, to take a 24-0 lead, and leave the Camp Randall crowd stunned.  But Wisconsin did something that no other Big Ten team had been able to do.  They made the right adjustments.  Martinez, who had put up 400+ yards on Ohio State, Penn State and Iowa, was held to just 84 total yards over the final 3+ quarters, as Bucky mounted a slow, but steady comeback.  Rather than the home run long runs they've hit on the Huskers during their conference rivalry, they just started grinding out 5-6 yards per carry, with Groshek, Watson and Berger each running for over 70 yards individually.  Down 27-23 with about 4:50 to go, and facing 4th and goal at the 5, Paul Chryst elected to go for the lead, rather than take the field goal, and Jack Coan completed the pass to Danny Davis, but Nebraska made the tackle short of the end zone.  Bucky's defense rewarded their coach by forcing the Huskers off the field after just one first down, and Groshek powered in the go ahead touchdown with 57 seconds left, and Martinez's 46 yard hail mary sailed wide of the end zone, ending Nebraska's Cinderella CFP pursuit.

LSU got up 13-0 late in the 2nd quarter, and then Auburn decided to start playing.  Bo Nix took the team on a 75 yard drive, accounting for all the yards himself, via his arms and legs.  Then John Emery fumbled on the first play of the following drive, and Nix hit Seth Williams on the first play, for a 28 yard catch and run touchdown.  LSU went from looking to be up two scores on the road at half time, to down, and they never recovered.

The Tar Heels were in total control, they just gave up way too many sacks that ended drives in 4th and long.  UNC ended up with over 500 yards of total offense, compared to just 198 for NC State.  The Wolfpack tallied 8 sacks, but that was just about the only positive for them.

The Cyclones' undefeated season ended last week, and while their Big XII title game birth was already clinched, and hope of a CFP bid looked to be fading thanks to a terrible start from Brock Purdy, who started 5-11 for 46 yards and a pair of interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, as West Virginia sprinted out to a 10-0 lead.  Iowa State showed their moxy, responding with three consecutive touchdown drives, and before you knew it Purdy had 275 yards and 2 scores, and Iowa State was up 27-10.  West Virginia threatened, scoring again, and getting the ball back down to the Iowa State 22.  Down 10, the Mountaineers elected to go for it on 4th and 2 from the 24, rather than kick a 41 yard field goal.  Their shovel pass was stopped for no gain, and Iowa State's national title hopes survived.

The Razorbacks miracle run to a New Years Six bowl took a major hit this afternoon when the Tigers scored two touchdowns in the final minute, thanks to an onside kick recovery, and overturned a 28-16 deficit.  In fairness it was only a +2 TO differential, and a 14-3 point of turnovers margin that had Arkansas in the position they were in.  Now they have to wait and see if the committee gives them a slot.  Granted, if you had told Arkansas fans preseason they'd have to "settle" for a Citrus or Outback Bowl bid, they certainly would have signed up for that.

Minnesota fans may point to Tanner Morgan injuring himself in the 1st quarter on a non-contact injury, but you really can't put any blame on the Gopher offense, that still scored 4 touchdowns, and 33 points.  They also didn't do a half bad job against the Husker passing game, holding Martinez to just 109 yards through the air.  Problem was Nebraska gained over 7 ypc on the ground, with 164 from Martinez, along with 111 from Dedrick Mills.  Now it's time for Husker fans to cozy up tomorrow, and...gulp...root for Iowa.

UCF went right down the field on 7 plays, forced a 3 and out, and got the ball back into the red zone.  The Knights tried to punch it in on 4th and goal from the 2, rather than take the FG.  They failed, USF put together a 98 yard, 16 play scoring drive, and that kicked off a 55-10 run for the Bulls to absolutely lay it on the AAC's first place team.  UCF may yet reach the conference title game, but their chance to handle their own business failed.  It also seems like nobody wants the Group of Five bid.

Mike Leach was perhaps watching from Starkville as his former squad finally broke through in the Apple Cup.  The Huskies led 10-0 after 1, but Washington State scored 4 consecutive touchdowns to take control of the game and the rivalry, their first regulation win over Washington since 2007.

Texas can't get into the Big XII Championship, but their 9-3 finish may put them in play for a New Years Six bowl.  FOr their part Oklahoma State's second half collapse was complete.  The Pokes did finish 6-6, so they'll go play in a bottom tier bowl, but for a team that was once 6-1, that's about as hollow as it gets.

Once again Michigan could secure a trip to the CCG with a win over their rivals, and once again, it wasn't competitive.  Michigan pinned the Buckeyes deep after stalling out around midfield on their first drive, but Justin Fields led a 93 yard touchdown drive, and three straight touchdown drives to start the game.  Shaun Wade scooped up a fumble and ran it down inside the redzone, leading to a fourth Buckeye touchdown, and a 31-0 halftime lead.  The final 30 minutes was more of a coronation than a football game.

Well, we've got some chaos.  The Gamecocks used a 72 yard touchdown on a broken coverage, and a fumble recovery inside the Clemson red zone as part of a 20-0 lead.  Then the offense stalled, and let Clemson get back to within 20-17, but a Trevor Lawrence injury and a pair of turnovers in their own end of the field ended Clemson's national title hopes.  The Tigers have to regroup for a red hot North Carolina, if they want to win their 6th consecutive ACC title.

Jamie Newman had probably his worst game of the year, with just 126 passing yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions, but the defense absolutely shut the Yellow Jackets down.  Georgia Tech only reached the red zone once...and it ended in a field goal, one of three for Georgia Tech, who needed a win to secure bowl eligibility for the first time under Geoff Collins.  Now they need to hope there is room and willingness to add a 5-7 team somewhere.  Considering 11 of 14 ACC teams went 6-6 or better, it seems unlikely.

Instead, Kyle Trask fumbled the ball, Florida State recovered, and Florida ended the season with a hollow 10-2 record, that included losses to both of their rivals, and no shot at the SEC or national titles

Friday game:

Kedon Slovis completed 18 of his first 22 passes for 198 yards.  Problem is 2 of the 4 incompletions were interceptions.  Conversely, even with C.J. Verdell going down in the first quarter with an ankle injury, the Ducks barely even tried to pass.  And why would they?  Anthoyn Brown ran for 115 yards on over 10 ypc, Travis Dye had 131 yards, and even though the numbers weren't great, Cyrus Habibi-Lakio chipped in 8 carries for 33 yards, but half of those carries resulted in first downs (3) or a touchdown (1).  The Trojans elected to punt the ball to Oregon with just over 4 minutes to go, and all 3 timeouts, which proved to be the right decision, getting the ball back on their own 20, with still nearly 2 minutes to play.  After crossing midfield in just 4 plays, and still 1:19 to play, Slovis threw an incomplete pass on 1st down, threw the ball away under pressure on 2nd down, and then got too aggressive on 3rd down, tried to throw it downfield, and threw his 3rd pick of the game.  The win gives Oregon their second consecutive Pac 12 title, but with the Rose hosting a semifinal, the Ducks will not be heading back to Pasadena.  For USC, it's tough to see Clay Helton returning.  As good as things felt two weeks ago, after beating UCLA to reach the conference title game.  Back to back losses to Notre Dame and Oregon, guaranteed the program their worst three year stretch since 1999-2001.

Well done Big XII.  Your greed in adding an unnecessary championship game, when you had a champion ranked in the top 4, who won the league by 2 games, has cost you a CFP bid. The Cyclones looked to pull off a comeback for the second consecutive week, after spotting TCU a 24-3 lead, but closing to 24-13 at the half.  It was not to be, as the Horned Frogs took the opening kickoff of the second half into Cyclone territory, and scored two plays later.  Brock Purdy threw a pick six, and TCU, 5 plays into the second half, had scored two touchdowns, to open the lead up to 38-13, and put it in cruise control from there.  The playoff is a mess now.  It's the 1 loss SEC champ, and then the Big Ten and ACC champs (which may each have 2 losses)  Then?  A 2 loss non-champ?

The Cajun defense was in complete control, leading 20-7, with Appy State's lone touchdown coming on a 58 yard punt return.  But they got something figured out, and completely flipped the script, scoring three straight touchdowns prior to halftime, taking a 28-20 lead into the break.  Then, in the second half, the defenses came alive.  UL Lafayette scored a touchdown with 39 seconds left to close within 4, but could not recover the onside kick, and the Mountaineers claimed their fifth consecutive Sun Belt title.

I'm honestly not sure how Northern Illinois is doing it.  This is the first game all season I actually let play out, their previous 12 were just simmed using FPI, where they ranked 9th of 12 MAC teams.  Yet they won the title, with an offense that the Bobcats couldn't even begin to slow.

I'd say defense optional, but I'm not even sure it was that.  There were only two punts, both from UAB, and it felt like the game was going to be last team with the ball.  I guess technically that was true, because the Owls tried to set up a lateral play with 4 seconds left, down 59-55, at their own 46.  The result was a fumble, returned for a touchdown by UAB, for the first and only two score lead by either team all game.

If San Diego State loses, is Memphis back into the New Years Six?  The Tigers looked to take a commanding two score lead, but Brady White threw a pick six to tie the game at 30-30.  Not to be denied, he took Memphis right back fown the field, and scored the winning touchdown with 4:07 to play.

Facing 4th and gaol from the 4, down 25-21 with just over 8 minutes to play, Kirby Smart elected to go for the lead, and Georgia was stuffed.  The Crimson Tide ran the ball three straight times...for 9 yards, and punted it away.  The Bulldogs scored consecutive touchdowns to avenge their regular season loss, and be the first team to confidently secure their CFP bid.  Now Bama needs to wait and see if 11-2 with a split with Georgia is still enough to get in.

Both offenses struggled to find a groove, the game remaining scoreless past the midway point of the second quarter.  Then the Falcons got it going, powered one touchdown in after a 14 play drive, converted a fumble recovery inside the Aztec red zone into an 8 yard touchdown drive, and after a score on their first possession of the second half, took a commanding 24-0 lead.  Who gets the Group of 5 bid now is anyone's guess.

CMU dominated the first half, but UAB hit a 72 yard pass on the second play of the second half to somehow cut it to 6.  CMU immediately responded with a 6 play touchdown drive of their own, with the biggest play being a 54 yard completion down to the 2.

The Cowboys used a pick six to cap a 28-0 start, that was still 38-10 at halftime.  But the RedWolves weren't giving up, and had the ball twice with a chance to tie in the final 7 minutes, but simply couldn't finish off the comebqack.

Early on, it did not look like there was a prayer of Western Kentucky slowing down the mustangs offense, as SMU scored 17 first quarter points.  They did, but that's 17-0 lead was the same as the margin of victory.

In case you flip the channel early, due to two inept offenses, who combined for more turnovers (4), than points (3), you missed a doozy of an ending.  Penn State didn't get on the board until 6:17 to play in the third, already trailing 10-0.  From that point the two teams went back and forth, and Penn State converted to fourth downs on their final drive, but with four seconds left, and the ball at the seven yard line, Franklin elected to kick a field goal to send the game to overtime, rather than go for the win.  The orange squirt on their second play of overtime, and after missing Dotson wide open down the same high on the first play of their offensive possession, Penn State failed to even get a first down, ending their three-game winning streak

Ole Miss at one point had a 317-91 edge in yards...and a 10-3 lead.  Missed a FG, and had two red zone interceptions.  That opportunity to be up big was wasted, as Texas Tech turned it on.

Pitt jumped to a quick 14-0 lead, but the Utes scored 20 unanswered to go ahead early in the 4th.  The Panthers got inside the 10 with about 6 minutes to go, and elected to kick a FG to cut the score to 20-17, and were paid off when they intercepted Utah's second play from scrimmage and punched it in with 1:16 left.  Utah never crossed midfield.

There was zero defense in the desert, both team going over 500 total yards.  Illinois scored on their first two drives, holding the Pokes to a three and out in between.  That was the only drive Oklahoma State didn't score on until late in the third.  It was a game of momentum swings, as Oklahoma State went from down 14-0 to up 24-14, but it was tied at 24 at halftime.  Illinois opened up a 45-35 lead, but the Cowboys weren't done, with Spencer Sanders leading the team on a pair of scoring drives, including a 31 yard FG on the final play to send it to OT.  After moving the ball at will, both teams had negative yardage in overtime.  Oklahoma State elected to go for it on 4th and 20 over kicking a 52 yard field goal, and while the pass was complete, it was well short of the necessary yardage.  Illinois, after dropping a 3rd down pass which would have set up a 34 yard game winning field goal, instead drilled a 49 yarder for the program's first bowl win since 2011.

Hokies jumped out 10-0 after the first, but a pick 6 jump started the Longhorns to a 34-7 run.  Virginia Tech tacked on a meaningless touchdown in the final minute, but that was it.  Texas was +4 in turnovers.

Neither offense got much going in the first half, but Stanford turned a punt return fumble into a field goal, and scored the game's lone touchdown on a 56 yard catch and run on a broken tackle, taking a 13-0 lead into the break.  Spencer Petras' terrible first half turned into a serviceable second half, and he wound up with 217 passing yards, after just 81, on 7-17 passing in the first.  But Iowa never took the lead, having two game tying opportunities in the second half.

New Years Day non-CFP bowls

Terrible first game, as should be expected.  The Falcons couldn't do anything, as Florida State's interior line was blowing things up in the backfield all game long.  Air Force had two runs of over 60 yards...and wound up with 138 rushing yards.

How Florida won this game is beyond me.  Michael Penix threw for 374 yards, and the Gators were -4 in turnover differential, thanks to 3 interceptions and a fumble from Kyle Trask.  His fourth turnover, a fumble fighting for extra yards on a 23 yard run to put Florida into the redzone could have lost the game.  But a dropped pass by Whop Phiylor gave Tom Allen a decision to make.  Facing 4th and 3 at his own 38 with 4:10 to play, Allen elected to punt the ball.  The Hoosiers didn't get it back until 37 seconds remained.

Kellen Mond had a very Kellen Mond start.  He completed 16 of his first 19 passes, but 2 of his incompletions were caught by Michigan defensive backs.  The Wolverines converted three possessions starting in Aggie territory into 17 first quarter points.  Joe Milton was very Joe Milton, throwing for 246 yards, but on 51% completion rate, and Michigan didn't score again until Texas A&M had clsed the gap to 17-16 late in the third.  That Milton to Nico Collins touchdown pass pushed the Wolverines lead back to 24-16, and while the defense allowed Spiller to score on a screen pass with 2:13 to play, they were able to get the hold on the two point conversion to end Michigan's 2 game losing streak.

New Years Day CFP bowls

Neither team was able to get more than one score of separation until Mac Jones hit Jaylen Waddle over the top for a 48 yard score with 11 minutes left to go in the game, to push the Tide lead to 48-34.  That was the story of Alabama's offense all day, with 9 plays of over 20 yards, but Jones only completed 57% of his passes.  Trey Sermon had his best drive of the game, tallying 58 of his 108 rushing yards on the day, in getting the Buckeyes back within one score.  They never got it back.

Clemson's offense struggled in the first half, with Trevor Lawrence throwing two interceptions in a matchup of the Heisman winner (Lawrence) vs. the runner-up (Newman).  The Bulldogs took a 14-3 lead into the break, but Lawrence came alive in the third, throwing for 203 yards an a pair of scores in the quarter.  A field goal pushed the lead to 21-14 with 13 minutes left.  Newman was not to be outdone, and Georgia scored the last 14 points of the game.  The final touchdown was set up by a 31 yard Newman run down to the 6 with 9 yards left.  Clemson let Georgia score with 6 seconds left, but weren't able to do anything.  So we get Alabama-Georgia III, the rubber match, for the title

January 2 bowl games

In the most letter conservative QB battle of all time, Bo Nix held off Ian book, by finally punching it into the end zone, when he needed to.  The Tigers' first 5 trips inside the Irish 25 yard line resulted in 5 field goals, while Ian Book struggled, but led Notre Dame on a pair of touchdown drives.  The Irish sold out to make Nix keep the ball, and he did.  While he wasn't efficient, he did wind up with 118 rushing yards on 23 carries.  Trailing 18-15 with 4:55 to play he finally led Auburn to their first touchdown drive of the game.

The Huskers completely shut down the Iowa State offense early, while stretching their early lead to 16-0, even with a pair of Taylor Martinez interceptions, including one in the end zone.  The Cyclones kicked a field goal on the final play of the half, to cut it to 16-3.  The game really shifted after Matt Campbell elected to punt on 4th and 2 from his own 48 midway through the third.  Nebraska was pinned inside their own 1, and a short run and two incomplete passes later, a tipped punt went out of bounds at the Nebraska 22.  Iowa State scored a touchdown 3 plays later, and scored again before the third was over, to go up 17-16.  Scott Frost went to Luke McCaffrey after Martinez had thrown 2 interceptions, and was ineffective on the ground.  The move seemed to pay off immediately, as Nebraska drove 75 yards for a touchdown.  McCaffrey was held out on the quarterback keepr for the two point conversion, but Nebraska regained a 22-17 lead.  The Husker defense, which had played so well in the first half, allowed the Cyclones back to back touchdown drives, with Breece Hall tallying 96 of his 171 rushing yards over those final two drives.

The Badger defense did the best they could, but Jack Coan was awful, completing just 113 passing yards on the day, and North Carolina was set up time after time.  It was a respectable 9-0, late in the 2nd before Sam Howell hit Dymai Brown on a 46 yard catch and run to stretch it to 16-0.  Mack Brown went aggressive, burning his timeouts to get the ball back, and with the ball back to the Badgers 44, it looked like it might pay off.  Instead Scottie Nelson picked off a tipped ball across the middle, and Wisconsin got down to the UNC 32.  A missed field goal left Wisconsin scoreless at the half, and they never got the ball that deep into North Carolina territory again until the 4th quarter.

National championship

Georgia took the opening kick, and scored a touchdown on just 4 plays, to start three consecutive scoring drives to open the game.  After finally getting a stop, the Bulldogs were in position to go up two scores.  Jamie Newman took a sack to knock the Bulldogs out of field goal range, but made up for it with a 41 yard touchdown pass on 4th and 19 to stretch the lead to 21-7.  The Tide then woke up.  With the game tied at 28, Georgia hit a chip shot FG with 14:31 left, but Brian Robinson took an end around 75 yards for a score on Alabama's first play.  They scored the final 17 points to win the rubber match between these two schools, for the national title.

A 2 loss national champ!  A national title game that wasn't just a rematch, but a three-match!  It's what we all want.
